Couple things to know about thunderstorms. The major risks are heavy precip, hail, and severe turbulence. Lightning is also a factor but it rarely is an issue for airplanes. The FAA has a well known recommendation to remain at least 20 nautical miles away from thunderstorms. So while you can see lightning all over this video, the plane itself is a safe distance from the actual storm cell as demonstrated by the smooth flight in the video. Remember these planes are flown by two very experienced pilots and are have the support of their company’s dispatch team and ATC. They are flying IFR and would never be released for takeoff if there was an actual threat. Once airborne, they have tools onboard to see ground based and airborne radar and know up to the minute what is in front of them many miles out, in addition to ATC providing aircraft separation and weather vectors.

Okay, but then 1) why do planes get hit by lightnings regularly if they are at least 20 miles away? The thing with thunderstorms is that it is hard to predict where it moves and where it would hit. 2) why do pilots do fly through bad weather sometimes even if there is only minimal chance of getting struck by lightning or hail or severe turbulence? Shouldn‘t safety be more important than economical interests?

Some context here for anyone who might be wondering what kind of maniac pilot takes off into a thunderstorm. They never flew through a thunderstorm…not even close. Notice how smooth the flight is. All modern airliners (and even many smaller airplanes) are equipped with advanced weather radar so if their flight path happens to take them through a storm, they’ll shimmy around it…you can actually find videos on KZbin of weather radar with dozens of airplanes dipping around storms, etc. You know how thunderstorms always look crazier at night? That’s because you see all of the little flashes in the distance that are obscured during the day. That’s what you’re seeing here. The fact that there was minimal turbulence means the convective air (the stuff you NEVER wanna fly through…A380, Piper Tomahawk, doesn’t matter…icky death awaits) was *well* off in the distance. They were never in any danger.

@@megadethly Severity of Turbulence For the purpose of reporting and forecasting of air turbulence, it is graded on a relative scale, according to its perceived or potential effect on a 'typical' aircraft, as Light, Moderate, Severe and Extreme. Light turbulence is the least severe, with slight, erratic changes in attitude and/or altitude. - Moderate turbulence is similar to light turbulence, but of greater intensity - variations in speed as well as altitude and attitude may occur but the aircraft remains in control all the time. - Severe turbulence is characterized by large, abrupt changes in attitude and altitude with large variations in airspeed. There may be brief periods where effective control of the aircraft is impossible. Loose objects may move around the cabin and damage to aircraft structures may occur. - Extreme turbulence is capable of causing structural damage and resulting directly in prolonged, possibly terminal, loss of control of the aircraft.

Reality is the pilots are just navigators through most of the flight. They look at radar, get instructions from ATC, and “tell” the aircraft where to go through Autopilot. The true heroes are the designers and builders of these amazing aircraft who put them through tests most aircraft will never experience in a real flight. As scary and uncomfortable as these flights may be, the airplane is designed to withstand so much more.

@rn2811 Жыл бұрын
Having structural failure on an aircraft is extremely rare if you look at the statistics and losing your hydraulics also isn’t going to make an aircraft fall out of the sky. Now losing all 4 tires while cruising down a highway….that’d be interesting to see that outcome.

Professional pilots don’t fly through thunderstorms. Yes, on occasion, they blunder into one or get too close. Depending on the severity of a storm or a line of storms, the minimum distance is 20 miles of deviation. That doesn’t mean you won’t experience some turbulence. Lighting from a storm that is no where close to the airplane can seem like it is. Especially if you’re flying in clouds.

Hell yeah. In the summer months any airport in states near the Gulf of Mexico are hell to fly in. I got into a storm coming into Atlanta from Frankfurt Germany on a Lufthansa DC-10 one July and it was pure hell. I try to avoid having to fly along the Gulf coast in the summer.

Garden variety thunderstorm. You made it sound way more dramatic than it actually was.

I enjoy the video I an ex pilot myself and crazy as it sounds the best time that I flew and that I flew was when there was a lot of wind turbulence and so forth of course but all was safe thank you for the video I hope to see more!

How do u deal with turbulence and landing takeoff during thunderstorms
@totalmerica63972 жыл бұрын
@@hibbahq a few things pilots do during turbulence is 1 get higher to avoid it 2 they typically try to plan their route to avoid it and 3 they have autopilot that can keep the plane level.

There was no tornado, just some flying near thunderstorms. That was not even bad.

I'm late to your video. But however your right right before the 4:30 min mark indeed was a power flash not sure from a tornado circulation. Straight line winds or lightning strike. But it was a power flash good eye!!!!

normal takeoff with an electrical storm, almost no turbulence, the title does not match what is seen in the video
