I’m working with my 1 year old border collie. He’s so aware and at attention that it causes bad habits like laser focus staring at dogs and some people. I also want him to be a dog park dog but he can be puppy aggressive when a puppy runs up to say hello to me. I don’t know what to do with it

This is what it is all about. A different approach than most trainers out there, and it works. It is necessary to see results in videos and every time, this channel shows the progress and explains everything in such a clear, concise way. This is the best content out there when it comes to training dogs. Gotta love it

Hi Joel, just wanted to let you know that i've discovered your youtube channel last Monday, and since then, i watched all your video (twice). We have a Border Collie that is anxious, impulsive and reactive when seeing other dogs, humans and also when humans approach us and talk to us. I've started to use multiple of your methods (Ex: setting the tone of the walk at the door, correcting bad behaviour by pulling leash backwards, no touching during walk or anxious/fearful moment, proofing the knock it off / leave it / Come). I can already see a huge improvement (feeling that we are finally on the same page, well that he's on mine). Thanks a lot for all that knowledge and pleaase keep sharing this awesome information. Not only you make our lives much easier, but you also impress our neighbours. Cheers!

It's so cool to see. I totally believe that dog is reactive to cars and dogs because you could see his whole posture change, but as you said, he was checking in with you which kind of broke up his focus. It's also amazing to see when you show what not to do like petting the dog a ton you can instantly see the dog get a little crazy. Or, in other videos when you hold the leash tight you see the dog stiffen up.

Excellent video. So helpful as we have two German Shepherds who have been trained when they were young but now that they are adults our discipline had slipped and they pretty much ruled the roost and the leash pulling and lunging at times toward other dogs is of course stressful they are big strong dogs - mainly our female Nikita incidentally, but she has changed so quickly over this past week alone, and our boy Ronin from using your methods! Really like your videos! They have been super helpful so far with my Rhodesian Ridgeback pup. (who is now 11 months old) Quick question: I get walking my dog on the same side. Is there anything to moving your dog to the other side when there is a dog on the same side as your dog. Like at 8:42 of this video. As in putting your body in between your dog and the fenced dog? Thanks very much.

I’ve been scrolling your videos today and this is my dog exactly. Super reactive to dogs and vehicles. This is amazing to watch and I’m going to start tomorrow. Are you using a regular flat collar with him and with your other dogs?
@neuromancer5661
@neuromancer5661 Жыл бұрын
He uses flat collars, but if you are going to do strong corrections like this instead of a quick pop, I'd recommend a wide (1.5 inch for 50lb & up dog) collar. I'd recommend a tactical collar because they are super strong (less likely to come off), have a quick realease mechanism, and distribute the pressure of the correction over a larger portion of their neck.

I try treats, I try popping on the collar, I try turning his head towards me… Nothing works. So I’m not really sure when to praise him?

Interesting, at around 9 mins the dog goes from fight to flight when he sees the other dog. He didn’t know what to do now that he wasn’t reacting to the other dog, so fear set in, but over time that will be replaced by a very relaxed behaviour (fight > flight > relax). Awesome videos :)

New subscriber! I’ve a question on this though, is a correction suitable for an anxious dog that sometimes has fear based on leash aggression or are you just adding to the stimulus? To me my dog either looks fearful of bigger dogs and barks or seems to see smaller dogs as pray (ears perk up and starts fixating). I’ve tried to use positive re-enforcement and threshold for fear based triggers and corrections when she looks like she is stalking, would you say that’s the correct method?

Great video! Problem I have is that I am walking two Frenchies and a Boxer/mastiff cross.....lol. When they decide they want to pull, it is all I can do to keep them in check. Am trying to train them one at a time in the hopes that when they are together they remember what they learned. BoxMas is an 8 month old, so he is a work in progress, though I think he minds better than the Frenchies who are older.

You keep trying to show us the effect of dogs not being trained except you keep showing us the perfect effect of your training!!! Too funny. I see and believe!!! I walk my dachshund/schnauzer with holding the blind yorkie in the left arm. I got to walk the super barky, bouncing to the max of her leash 4 foot in the air and yelling, yelling schnauzer with my right hand. I afraid I'm gonna drop the yorkie. I think I got to walk them seperate. It's too funny cause I cannot do the my leg/ her butt check cause she is 15 inches high and I can't get my knee down there. The whole thing is hilarious.

I love your videos! I can’t thank you enough! I will apply this right away. Now, when I walk my dog, I let him smell everything he wants, as long as he’s not pulling on leash, but that means he goes from side to side and does his thing. He loves to smell and I feel like it satisfies him and his curiosity as well as tire him out more. I would be sad to take that away. What do you suggest?

Silly question, but can you do this with a 7 month old? My pup loses her shit with some dogs and others she wants to say hi and play. She’s a boarder collie Terri mix and has laser focus and gets in her crazy brain from way far out if we see someone walking with a dog that she doesn’t care for. Sounds like I have to get ahead of it much sooner with the leaving me. You said you couldn’t control him on the first walk, but this walked was great!
@tonystark9576
@tonystark9576 2 жыл бұрын
I also like Victoria Stilwell's method which is very similar but it make the dog use their brain to work out how they get what they want. Dog pulls you call or use a command then turn around and bring them the other way and keep doing it until they get calm enough to approach/get close enough to other dog friendly like. The better the dog acts the closer he gets to the other and if they misbehave turn and keep going until they get close enough for a short sniff then back off a foot or so. Not a dog trainer but I will be soon and I am educated in the topic, Hope I helped!

Hi Joel, greetings from Kuala Lumpur in covid lockdown! I have been following you for some weeks. My young Doberman cross (he’s a rescue from the SPCA) is reactive to other dogs - mostly to other dogs either on leads or from behind their gates. I’ve hired a trainer to help me but his methods are harsh - using a choke collar - which I really detest. I’m trying to use your methods with a flat collar - I’ve seem much improvement with Gucci but he’s still reactive to other dogs. Do I keep persevering? I take him out when there is minimal chance of seeing other dogs and now he walks past houses where there are confronting dogs - unless they are up and barking. Any advise?

I feel they need as much desensitization as anything else use the tricks in the video but while another dog is in shot if unless the other dog is barking then find another, preferably a calm older dog without barking or growling issues and start far away then slowly as they are doing good bring them closer. Hope I helped! Try to find a friend with a dog or find friends specifically because they have behaved dogs etc.

A dog I'm trying to help just ignores corrections, what can I do please? It's a german shepherd who was bit as a pup and now it aggressive to other dogs. I'm trying but nothings working for me. I've tried the walking up and down and trying to get her to follow me but she's always in her own mind even if I give her a small tap, if she's focused she just will not follow or pay attention to me. It's not my dog, it's my sisters but she's scared of taking her out now incase something happens. I've got the dog to stop pulling, or at least lowered how often she tries to pull but she just will not tolerate people or dogs.

I feel you could find your own command like "watch me" or "focus" with a loud snap in your voice, not yelling but authoritative. Hope I helped! But of course all of it starts in the house while they are distracted and busy like eating and playing, eventually they will be able to drop whatever they are doing and stare at you or come then sit etc.

When my dog sees another dog, she stops and stares. Then she immediately walks towards the dog. Usually, when there’s a big dog she acts reactively. Although, yesterday she acted the same way with two smaller dogs.

I'm wondering what i am doing wrong. I make the corrections but my GS keeps going away. He never looks at me when we're walking, he always try to go walking in front, even if I stop a hundred times. He loses his mind, barks like a maniac and his back hair stands up when another dog is less than 2 meters near or a dog barks at him. Yet he has some "enemies" which are so kind with other dogs, but as soon as they see my Max, start barking at him and everything is a mess. I love him but sometimes is so hard to take a walk.....

Ive a 4 months old gsd, he lunges at dogs, although it seems pretty bad i assume he just wants to play or he is scared. Been trying this but without many results, any suggestions? This is his only flaw and the dogs that he has actually met he has been great so far.

I'm guessing you're having this problem while walking your dog? If not, the following advice is irrelevant (not that you should listen anyway. I'm not a professional). I'm not an expert or anything, but I imagine you need to work on keeping the dog with you and "checking in" on a regular basis *before* you expose them to the triggering stimulus. And as soon as the dog *sees* the stimulus you need to be testing him, not waiting for him to lunge. So like if the other dog is 50 feet away and your dog notices them, you should be testing to make sure he's paying attention to you and following you rather than doing his own thing. Don't wait until the other dog gets close. Your dog should be with you at 50 feet. At 40 feet. At 30 feet. At 20 feet. And finally at 10 feet. If you don't test him, you might've lost him at 50 feet and never noticed, and then when he finally lunges at 10 feet you'll wonder why he misbehaved all of the sudden. Well he probably started misbehaving long before the lunge, but you didn't test him. I can only really offer general advice and, again, I am not a professional trainer, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

@@discipleoferis549 I agree completely, you worded it perfect to! I'm not a trainer either but a very educated individual about to pursue a career as a dog trainer so I am knowledgeable enough. You were very right! Another good source is Victoria Stilwell the certified dog trainer,she is associated with the channel "It's me or the dog" and "E how pets" etc. And her methods are very effective. Hope I helped!

Can you do that kind of correction with a 6-month-old puppy? 35-lb puppy. Would it hurt his neck ?

I would recommend the similar method, I would save this for a slightly older dog but puppy do the same but instead of pulling turn around and just walk the other way same premise but less abrasive to the young pupper, also if you were curious who I got it from Victoria Stilwell the pro trainer she is awesome and successful with this method she is associated with the channel " it's me or the dog" and "E how pets". Hope I helped!

my mastiff totally ignores my lead pops are they not strong enough .he has a lot of skin round his neck and I wondered if that stops him feeling them so much would a martingale collar be more effective?

I've found with flabbier dogs this happens sometimes, another reliable trainer Victoria Stilwell has a similar method but instead you turn around and go the other way completely! They don't get where they want if they pull you and it's not about sensing it about to happen, they pull you pull a fat U-turn on the sidewalk. I hope this helps, I trust Victoria's methods and only found Beckman after but they are both amazing trainers! Also about the collar I'd recommend a no pull harness which has a chest loop, so when they pull it brings their chest toward you making this method a lot easier because you may have to brute force it a little the first couple times but after it'll get better. Again hope I can be of assistance!

Just a quick question. I was reading online about yanking the lead when the dog is looking at something that it is fearfull off. And how that can make the dog more worried about that object as they are being pulled away from it. What do i do? is this wrong, I have an anxious border collie and im not sure what i should do. Do i do the corrections like he shows or not. Thanks so much.

No, don't do the corrections like he does - this trainer is a joke. Not once was the dog leash reactive - watch more of his videos, you'll notice this trend of "this dog is aggressive or resource guarding" and then he has some excuse as to why it wasn't shown in the video. Also, the 'trainer' never once told the dog to heel so how is the dog supposed to know to stay by his side? Does the dog even know heel? Also the so called trainer did was use adverse means to scare the dog. Watch the behavior of the dog - did you ever once see the dog being reactive? He didn't even make a sound. For better training please watch Leerburg or Karen Pryor.

@@Cloudyyyy88 if your confused as to what trainer all this BS. Victoria Stilwell she's associated with the channel "it's me or the dog" check it out and see the results in someone's home with their dog 100% impossible to fake that. She uses the method of turning around and walking the other way but she goes way more into depth and I've seen it work magic first hand! So don't take my word for it just check her out and see if you like. Hope I helped!
