My GS just turned 5 months old..he has literally invented a pinball game where he puts a firm rubber ball on a bookcase shelf, nudges or punches or licks it into motion where it rolls then drops down underneath and comes out somewhere else, or he has to bat it without seeing it under the shelf to get it to bounce out and listens carefully where it’s going..it’s just crazy and fun to watch his wheels turn..I tell the trainers I’m going to that “I’m the only one holding him back..”..

GSDs can surprise you with their abilities. They can themselve adapt to understand your day to day words. They can sit down under your table or next to you or near door when you do your office work. They act as a actual guardian when you take them out for walk, and mostly become less reactive until trained for otherwise. Their instinct are just next level. They know someone approach you with bad intentions. Their hearing is superhuman, their smell sense is superhuman. If there ever existed a perfect dog breed that can be used for literally any purpose, they are GSD.

Got my first GSD in 1959, currently have 5. Trained Schutzhund & police. Mals are good - for the right person - but for me, there is no other working dog that compare to the GSD. The absolute best for a family, single person, protection etc. GSDs just have a "wise" personality & can tell what to do & when to do it. (with correct training of course).

This comment expresses what has been my own experience as well. I've had several working breeds, and my GSD was above and beyond. In addition to being easily trained with gentle guidance, she was a superior problem solver and analyzer of situations, as well as working partner and companion. Had high energy and drive when needed, and calm otherwise. She was given special privileges everywhere she went.

I think it's important to keep in mind the behavior differences between German Shepherds. I've had three GSDs in my life, one when growing up, one born in '06 and now a 7 month old DDR Working line from the Jipo-me line. The spectrum they were/are on is huge. The first one, an American Show line GSD was a male and an absolute beast. Immensely protective, which was what we needed at the time because of our semi-secluded residence. The second one, an all-black Czech/American male was much gentler and calmer. Extremely social. The latest, a DDR female couldn't be more different from the others, in terms of focus and energy. She is the best bred, sire and dam both imports from one of the biggest Czech breeders. Crazy energy, in desperate need of activity and a job. I write this to help prospective GSD owners realize that all GSDs are NOT created equal. They're all individuals, of course, but knowing their bloodlines can be essential to your getting the dog you want. This is a great video, because it shows the differences between GSDs and Malinois. As far as the German Shepherds go, keep in mind the DDR working line dogs can be like the "standard" American German Shepherd on crack, too. As I've learned. :-)

No previous tracking training at all: she picked up the scent and found and pointed out 8 out of 9 dropped objects from the 400 yard trail and did the whole thing without hesitation. Perfect animal, very sharp both physically and mentally, likes everybody and not aggressive at all, but with great drive. What's more most of the world's military, Police & other security services opt for the G.S.D every time ( they cannot all be wrong). Personally, I find the working GSD much more asthetically pleasing than the Malinois. They have an imposing and often even a certain regal look to them that I find very appealing. This seems to be an irrelevant factor when comparing them in workability but if it comes to personal protection deterrance is vital. And I find the average working GSD to be much more intimidating than the average Malinois.

I train Service Dogs for the Elderly. I used to run Labs through my program and when I trained 3 different Malinois Rescues, I have not gone back to Labs. The Mal will temper the prey drive if they are given an outlet like Squirrels only. (Not the neighbor's cats, dogs or bicycles.) We also run "who's zattt" scenarios around my home and after 4-5 tries, I can send her out to do 5 sequential commands one after another perfectly. If I train too much she will do all 5 commands in reverse order to bust my balls. All any Belgian Malinois needs is a job. Once they are harnessed and perform a different set of rules they get it instantly. WE do Mobility Assist work with store carriages and Home Depot carts etc. They turn left or right or back on a quiet voice command. They understand this is their job. They share their strength with thier Alpha and feel very confident with themselves every time. Each dog gets one or two minutes to go pee after being let out of the truck and then they go into the ready position on their own...no commands needed. Once they learn the Dr's office, medical center or Hospital, they find a small section of wall to lay down and wait patiently until they hear "UP" I fully trust my dogs and have trained them for "Street Wise" and doing Guide Work like crossing the Alpha on a busy 4 lane road. I train them on choices constantly and although they love to be directed, the idea that they can be empowered to help the alpha is something they take very seriously. I had a new hip and a new knee and each time my dog gently taught me how to walk and exercise me correctly. (They get it). I am Diabetic and when I am low the dog will put her head between my legs and 9 times out of ten she is correct. I go in the house and get my meds. NO prong collars NO cages. Just a lot of love and and they thrive mentally, physically and spiritually. Sorry to bend your ear. I could go on and on.
@captjay78233 жыл бұрын
@lowland Shepherd Imagine getting shocks in the neck? How could the dog Trust you? Forcing them in training is not complete and predictable. If the dog loves you, trusts you, they will innovate and do their job even more efficiently. Mals have the power of reason and locking up the dog is the stupidest possible thing you could do to anyone or your dog They might have choices to get comfortable (she does not go on furniture but she has a nice bed she likes and most times she sleeps under my bed) ( bed is elevated 10") they want to roam the house and guard your home. My dog never leaves our yard because I walked the property line with her and she instantly understood what I was explaining to her. The Belgian Malinois is NOT for beginners or part timers. IF you have the time to invest the reward is a First Class Professional who loves you and would take a bullet for you.
@captjay78233 жыл бұрын
@lowland Shepherd We train with Mals for jumping from 12,500' in a harness on your chest. After the first jump the dog knows exactly what to do and actually understands how to land BOTH of us. As soon as you put the goggles on them they go into their game face and they get serious. The tail is wagging, the ears are straight forward and the tail is upright. They are calm and just look around as we fall towards the ground. Amazing Partners. Cairo went on the UBL Raid and another Mal got Al Bagdadi. These are combat soldiers and should be respected as such.

@lowland Shepherd do you intend on selling them?
@captjay78233 жыл бұрын
@lowland Shepherd Honestly, in General and GSD are very similar. I call the Mals the "GSD Sport Model". They are lighter, faster, less shedding and less hip and elbow problems. They suffer from insecure macho types who think they can put an athlete in a quiet mellow life style and they get beaten and thrown into shelters all confused. Most of my donations are Shelter Rescues. I rehab them mentally, spiritually, physically and empower them to think. They use this contrast in life to imprint and Bond to the new secure Alpha. I think the best owners are men or women who can invest the time to communicate with the dog. I am always looking for Malinois to save.

I see a lot of people make videos about feeding “raw” or some do premium kibble, however none seem to have the background or investment in the breed, it’s just their personal choices. Our GSD pup is on kibble and her energy seems to be lacking in the evenings, I’m guessing this is due to diet.
@berryblueswirl2 жыл бұрын
Could also be a result of a puppy going through a growth phase. My puppies would play with high energy, and then suddenly drop asleep. That's when my cats would approach to check them out. My GSD and other dogs tended to be larger, and they would go through rapid growth spurts. Personally, I never rely on kibble alone. I feed a blend of home cooked meals of stews with vegetables and poultry. Crock pot or Instant pot. I use kibble as a crunchy base. I also read a food labels, and stay away from treats with sugars, lots of glycerin, and other exotic or questionable ingredients. I also stick with reputable brands, buy mid-size quantities and rotate brands so that if an issue presents itself, my dogs haven't had a single brand as the only thing they have eaten. My dog's have been long lived with minimal health issues and good teeth. :)

He has been raised with a male, neutered dog since 8 weeks of age, but due to the dog parks being closed and lack of access to other dogs, he developed some aggression towards unknown dogs. Mainly large, intact males, but he also goes on high alert when seeing pretty much any dog. He is two years old now, and he does stop acting up when verbally reprimanded, but not when he perceives the dog as a threat. Neutering is not an option. Thank you for any advice.

Basically, and I think I have said this before, if you put the three Western European shepherd breeds together, the Malinois is the scary one, the Dutchie the crafty street fighter, and the GSD will be the adult in the room. I love all three, but ultimately you can't really compare them. The Dutch Shepherd is my personal favourite, but if my circumstances changed tomorrow, it's entirely possible I might find one of the other two better suited.

For me GSD all the way, but that is my personal opinion. I love the Malinois also. Think they are both the top of the food chain for working dogs. Then again I also like a good old fashioned Doberman and Rottweiler. Ah f it. I like all those 4. I have GSD but love watching the others.

So from the UK and didn’t know what a Hell Cat was until Google enlightened. Well as it happens I love Dodge cars so your analogy was perfect for a GSD ! Me thinks GSD’s have changed so much - my 1977 one was like a Range Rover or Land Cruiser - great for any occasion. I have GSD rehomes and would describe them as BMW’s - magnificent to look at but rear wheel drive makes them useless in certain‘weather conditions’ . My nephew has a Pup Malinois x GSD - very gorgeous can’t wait to see how he grows up. Thanks for your video 👍💕

BOTTOM LINE: Malinois DO NOT MAKE GOOD PETS. They MUST WORK - drive satisfaction. Get a German Shepard for a pet instead! Leave the Malinois to the working groups that are a perfect fit for them.
@adrianos73343 жыл бұрын
It's totally wrong to compare a Malinois with a German shepherd. They are complete different dogs and indeed the Malinois isn't a dog for everyone. They should compare the Tervuren or Groenendael, other Belgian shepherds with the German shepherd. They are all relatives.

We humans like to over-simplify things. A person who likes dog breeds, sometimes may think "which one is better?" but of course, no breed is better than another breed in all situations. One of my most favourite breeds is the GSD, but I did not choose the GSD as my dog. I chose a rottweiler. Do I think it is a better dog? No! It's a breed that fits me and my current situation best. I enjoy my rottweiler to the max, and I think no other breed would have been better for me now. That doesn't mean that I necessarily prefer the rottweiler to the GSD in all situations, or a malinois for that matter. They are all cool dogs.

100% agree, so boring of youtube vids comparing dog breeds and stupid comments like "my dog can bite stronger bla bla bla". Ive owned a several GSD, one boxer, one english bulldog and now I own a malinois, Ive enjoyed them all!!

Something I have noted gsd seem to be more disciplined on release command and being bigger and heavier can drop target more often, mals can get spun round gsds rarely do on bite.

Did he mean a working line GSD makes a better family dog than a Malinois?
@jfkst13 жыл бұрын
Yes, in general a working line GSD will be more environmentally versatile than a working line Mal/Dutchie.
@JimMaher-ky3fo11 ай бұрын
Yes. And it's true. We have our 2nd working lines GSD, and both have been fantastic family dogs. However you need plenty of space (at least a half acre, fenced) and an active lifestyle, with good access to a large wilderness are for walks - ideally with no other dogs around. Not the kind of dog to take to your local dog park.

A Malinois is a German Shepherd with a very slight advantage of agility and energy due to size. Personally I prefer the more stable energy levels of a German Shepherd over the Malinois + I like the slight size advantage the GSD has more of and body frame weight. I have always favored less energetic type dogs this is why I cant ever own a German Short hair pointer or Malinois etc they have a bit over the top energy for my liking and most normal families that wont be out hunting every day those dogs require lots of play time and land etc
@adrianos73343 жыл бұрын
The Malinois isn't a German shepherd, they don't look alike and they are complete different dogs. A Malinois is far more intelligent and is only a happy dog when he can learn and work. A Tervuren, another Belgian shepherd looks and is totally simular to the German shepherd.
@lolz6163 жыл бұрын
@@adrianos7334 i know they are different dogs lol it was a joke because they are similar in nature. You only proved my point Mals love to "work" aka they have lots of energy and typically more than a GSD that was my entire point.
