He presents training in 7 days. Each of 7 items are commands that he believes a dog should know. They are presented in part ii of the book kzbin.infoUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq . The parts of the guideare divided: part i know your dog part ii the seven commands part iii cures for 7 behavior problems. Each chapter presents a topic, a dog's story, and a "what to do". It was written simply and you can jump from chapter to chapter to review anything as needed.

I would love to see videos on training to buffer in crowds, training for anxiety attacks, and deep pressure therapy. This would help me immensely due to me having to train him myself. I'm an Army veteran with PTSD and all the stuff that goes along with it. I rescued an beautiful yellow lab/shepherd mix who has an amazing personality. Very sweet and is about 4 to 5 months old. I've had her for 1 month and really just spent that time bonding as she's never been in a house and had no idea how to be a puppy. We've mastered potty training and we've started with luring then sitting. I'm training her myself for my service dog with plans to take her to college with me. I have learned so much from watching your videos. Her task that's going to be trained is pressure therapy when my anxiety kicks up!

I must say that being a grad student and with the lockdown I made the decision to get a pup a few months and videos like yours are so helpful. Ive never realized how much of training my pup would actually be training myself and staying disciplined. Additionally, I was looking for companionship which I found plus more. While training I feel like our bond and love for each other strengthens and honestly at the end of the day thats what everyone wants- the idea of connecting with another. When she does learn commands and listens to me it is probably more rewarding to me than her haha! You may say that you help people train their dogs, but a mentality like yours with the energy you have in your videos is so infectious that I can see this passion spill into other areas of my life as I continue to grow as a person! Thank you so much!

I’m so thankful to Nate for his dedication and willingness to share so much content that actually works. I had a zoom private lesson with him. I highly suggest you do this because even when you think you are doing it right, there is probably an important nuance you have missed. Just one lesson rocketed me and puppy to the next level. Awesome training 👍 I grew up with at least three dogs in the household and I was the designated trainer throughout my life owning in training so many of my own family dogs. My last dog which was a labrador was my masterpiece! he went surfing with me, snow skiing with me, hiking, bouldering, high diving and fishing! I'm sure I'm forgetting quite a few things because I ran out of things to teach this dog! He could identify 10 different toys and pick out the one I asked for on demand, get food and drink out of the refrigerator and close the door. He would open the front door of the house on demand when my friends came over and then I would ask him to go get them beers out of the refrigerator. He would go and get a beer for myself and my friends! It was a riot my friends couldn't believe it!!! There's just so much more I did with my dog he went everywhere with me. was always a topic of conversation and people were always amazed at the things he would do and how he would pretty much read my mind. we began new routines on different scenarios all the time with high-fives and jumping into my arms on command and he was a 70 lb dog! Fortunately I'm big enough to handle catching him 😁🐶 I digressto watching how you train this dog and your methodology, smart. anyhow I'm looking to get my next dog and doing a bunch of research on the types of dogs that I like and what I will be doing with him or her. I'm also a traumatic brain injury survivor so actually I'm thinking to experiment with training my next dog to really serve traumatic brain injury survivors like. My last Labrador was the best gift that I was given the year after I had a traumatic brain injury. He was a huge factor in my healing and really connected in a way that I had never been connected to an animal before. He was my Shadow 🐶 he he lived a long and healthy life, 15yrs!!

This is so good! I trained dogs with an animal rescue many years ago- a lot of people trained differently, so I developed a mashup style training that was a work in progress for a long time and overtime I simplified it greatly. I really love your style, and I think it's perfect- it would be easy to implement even with a low perseverance dog. Really wonderful stuff and I am thankful that you've shared it. Ive got an 8 week old Aussie Shepherd thats going to be my service dog for a chronic health condition that can seriously limit my mobility and cognitive ability during a flare, not unlike MS. Whats great about the way you enforce behaviors is they are physically easy on the trainer, so I should be a le to train her on even terrible days. So excited! Thank you!

Thanks Jessica! When I first start a dog in service dog training, I start with obedience, socializing, and confidence building. I believe obedience is one of the most important things a service dog needs to be good at in all locations and with any type of distraction. With that being said, I've only been working obedience with Harley the past few months. However, she is getting close to starting more of the service dog tasks. I would say that episode 2 will probably be going up in the next two weeks or so. :)

Lovely video. I have a 15 weeks old Australian Shepherd boy. He's currently in training by myself (I do have some experience) and we're also getting an official trainer so that he can get a certificate later. He already knows the commands to sit, down, up, and also paw because I was curious how long it would take him to figure it out (5 minutes.. he's smart, hell). We've already been training in public places too like stores, train stations and farms. He's very calm and ignores any other animal, even dogs, except for when he's off the leash then he's free to play of course. He is going to be a PTSS service dog and when he's got all the basics he's going to learn things as crowd control and alerting and way more. Oh he already knows the commands to jump against me (hug) and lay down on my lap. For anyone reading this and thinks, oh, Australian Shepherds, sounds like they're well at the task. Don't get a shepherd if you don't know what you're working with! I've trained with this breed a lot before. They need a lot of physical and mental challenges, they need to work a lot, do a lot, and if you don't do this correctly... You have a dog that can become destructive or even aggressive.

Before anyone gets a dog with high drive they should have a plan for them they are not a pet they are a lifestyle

Hello Nate, first and foremost, “*THANK YOU”. The training of my 12week now, Sheepadoodle Service Dog, is going mind blowing well!!! I credit this to your awesome tutorial! How invaluable this has been. We (my husband Roxy) went on another obedience training walk. Started off Roxy kept trying to walk ahead, thanks to my professional dog trainers I immediately recognized it to be pent up energy. We returned home and she proved me right. My husband was amazed. Roxy got into the yard and started literally racing in circles around the yard. Once she had that out of her system, we started out again, a totally different dog. She happily heeled with a little prodding. I walked about 20’ had her “sit stay”. We would start again. Beautiful! Then we progressed to my husband walking way ahead. I released her and my husband called her. She ran directly to him he treated her and she came back to me. Again My Husband was very impressed.You truly have to see this to believe it.

Except I was way in over my head and am really not getting anywhere with her training. She is a 7 Month old Golden doodle. So far I have trained her to sit, lay down, wait, stay, kennel, Paw, Leave it, on command poop and pee, potty bell, and a horrible focus. These are the things I had planned on her learning- Bringing Medication Water to help swallow medication Bring a phone over during an anxiety attack so you can call your therapist or support system Leading someone to you if you're in crisis DPT Retrieving Dropped items Retrieving named items (Phone, Keys, Leash) Alerting handler to sit down before they pass out Alerting handler that they are breathing abnormally Apply Gentle teeth pressure to forearm to interrupt dissociative episode Alert Handler to episode of rage or strong emotion Interrupt repetitive self harm Burrow under legs of unconscious handler to raise blood pressure Make space in crowd (blocking) Grounding their handler during flashback Searching the home to relieve hyper vigilance Turn on light Lead handler to an exit Open/close doors Retrieve self care kit Nudge Unconscious handler into recovery position Wake up handler if having night terror Finding car in parking lot If you or any trainers you know in my area that can train these please please let me know. I'm pretty desperate at this time because I'll be going back to school for the first time in a year this coming September and I hope she can be ready by then.

Dog Training is a 4 step Process. Command > Motivate > Mark > Reward Fist ----- Mark > Reward (Attention). Second ----- Motivate > Mark > Reward Behaviour. Third ----- Command > Motivate > Mark > Reward Behaviour. Forth ----- gradually eliminate Motivate and to some extent, Reward, from the command sequence. Do I understand Dog Training now? Thanks

Its so refreshing to see comments of people knowing the laws and looking to train their dogs! Im going on my 3rd service dog, my first was a purely program dog, my second was half program / half owner train, and now after years of research and real world application dog training, im ready to completely owner train (with professional advice as needed). Really appreciate these detailed videos, they are a great help to those who just need a refresher (like me) and also for people who are just beginning their dog training journey! Good luck to my fellow handlers, I wish you all the best with your training!

My husband and I recently got a German shepherd puppy and your training videos are absolutely amazing! He is only 11 weeks old and we have been working with him for 2 weeks and he is doing amazing! We got everything down at home and in the yard! We will continue training in public in the next month or so! We have be socializing him with other pets and humans! The only problem we are having is he tries to snatch the reward out of our hands instead of gently taking it! Any suggestions? Also I’m so excited for part 2
@brookeandrusty4 жыл бұрын
Simpawtico dog training has a great video on training dogs not to snatch rewards called 'take it and leave it'. Basically you train those commands using toys which are easier to control the release than food treats, and only release when the dog takes it gently. I definitely recommend watching that video!
@NateSchoemer4 жыл бұрын
Great question! Check out the video that Brooke Pagan recommended and when I have some extra time I will make a video on how to stop a dog from doing this. It's pretty simple to fix once you know what to do. I'll try to make a video on this within the next couple of days. :)

We are currently in the process of looking for a mobility service dog for my 11-year-old daughter. There is typically a 2-5 year waiting period and a $10,000-$30,000 price tag. We have been heavily considering buying our own dog and paying for the training but know that a lot of that training would need to be done at home. Your series has been a ray of hope for our family. We weren't even sure where to begin the process but your concise instructions will definitely be an invaluable asset. My main questions are how often are your training sessions each day (how often) and how many times a week do you do the training? Also, about how long does it take to do the initial training ( I realize that this is probably an ongoing process).
@NateSchoemer4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Shani! I'm happy the videos have been helpful. You can find most of the answers to your questions in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hafHfHd7aJdpndU The initial training time will depend on many factors. How intelligent is the dog, how motivated is the dog, how much perseverance does the dog have, how clear is the training. Hope this helps and thanks again for supporting my channel. :)

"back" and"excuse me" are EXTREMELY helpful for hallways and apartments XDD I taught my dog to get out of my way when I would gently say "excuse me, please" when he was a grown-up Golden Retriever and we had to make do with apartment living. We all adored that dog...but he passed away recently. I'm intending to choose a shelter dog in July or somewhere thereabouts, so I'm binging on training videos to improve my teaching techniques.
@NateSchoemer4 жыл бұрын
I love that you taught your dog the command "Excuse me, please", to move out of the way. Reminds me of a dog that I trained to bow on command. The command was "say thank you" so when someone would say that I had a nice dog. I would tell my dog 'Say thank you" and he would bow. I always like unique commands like that, so thank you for sharing that with me. Also, I'm sorry to hear about your dog passing away, but I'm happy you're going to be giving a shelter dog a second chance. :)

@@NateSchoemer That's cool! I'm gonna be teaching my new guy all kinds of things, like putting pressure on my back and possibly agility competitions (It sure won't be a Border, though, so we'll see what happens!!) Those little things you mentioned like bowing to say thank you are a great idea. Gotta keep their minds busy, and a little showing off never hurts XDD

this is so helpful, i’m planning on getting my own pup to train as my psychiatric service dog. would you have any breed recommendations for large apartment living?
@kyeleehaverty12094 жыл бұрын
Eilean Aldrich I would suggest a husky or a shepherd
@summer-79684 жыл бұрын
If you wanted a larger dog, I would go with something with a manageable energy level such as a lab or a golden retriever, provided you could get out to the park or on regular long walks. Definitely would not go with a husky due to their high energy levels and general stubbornness, which can be difficult to work with for a first time self-trainer. If you wanted a smaller breed, there are far more options which would work for apartment living which I encourage you to explore.
@justjello75994 жыл бұрын
I DO NOT suggest velcro dogs for psychiatirc work, they're too intune with their handler and may feed of the anxiety, please go for one of the big three, poodles, labs or golden retrievers
@bellapelletier-soucy81994 жыл бұрын
it dosnt matter what others think you need to do research on every breed and figure out what breed works for your lifestyle, your ability to tranin and what your looking for in a dog. Good luck
@igudon2844 жыл бұрын
It's very important to find a good balance between workability, and independence. Husky's are WAY to stubborn and I feel you'd end up having a service animal that is unreliable (as a breed standard they aren't often used, although they can be). Poodles and Goldens are common because there energy levels can be depleted by mental stimulation, so apartment living would be a breeze if you're training, which it sounds like you'll be doing a ton of. Shepherd and malinois are difficult in that regard because they still need quite a lot of exercise as well as mental stimulation, and they can become destructive if they have too much pent up energy so apartments may make that difficult. However, no matter my advice, just do research and find a good dog. If I were you, I'd get a giant Schnauzer. They have the energy configuration of the poodles and goldens but they are a little less independent, so theyll ve very loyal. They are absolutely smart too so as a SA it will make the training easy. Please be aware though that they can become dog and stranger reactive if you dont socialize properly. Hope this helpes!! Sorry about any spelling mistakes, I'm on my mobile.

That is a good choice for a service dog! They're great dogs, they have taught my shepherd a lot she hadn't learned in the litter yet. I would recommend it after labrador or golden retriever as one of the best service dogs if you are looking for something with a bit more intensity then those retriever breeds but not as busy as german shepherds.

Absolutely love your videos. What a lot of trainers do is teach the behavior with dogs who already know the behavior. It doesn’t show how a dog who doesn’t know the behavior will react. Along with your dog doing the behavior correctly, you still demonstrate what to do if the dog does the behavior differently. Major props!

I have a service dog I trained myself. A male doberman. I get asked about training a service dog by many people because he is so highly trained (CDX, RAE, CGCA) passes through airport security metal detectors totally unteathered from a sit stay while I go through X-Ray. Most people don't understand to qualify as a service dog the handler must qualify under ADA being deprived of mobility or loss of one of the 5 senses. The dog must be nonreactive to people and other dogs and be trained to compensate for the disability. A PTSD dog must do all of the same and the handler needs to provide documentation from a mental health professional a dog is necessary. I detest people who abuse the Service Dog status with untrained dogs by slapping a mail order vest on their pet. Obedience 1st!!! ADA training 2nd.

Your videos are amazing thank you. I’ve had the easier ones before (Lab and Golden trained easily myself) but just got a GSD puppy for a bit of security and for a newly diagnosed MS patient myself hoping for a bit of service. I’m hoping to be able to train him for balance specifically and maybe a few other tasks like picking up dropped items or shutting a door. Your videos are helping immensely! Our pup is 9 weeks, we’ve had him a week and he already knows how to come, sit, lay down, walk next to me, settle in his place, wait and shake (for the fun of it.) These dogs are crazy intelligent! Having a bit of a rough time with the lure but I’m sure he’ll get it soon. I can’t thank you enough for these videos! Just wanted to let you know you helped another stranger out here!
