What is the “scent” called that wounded deer produce that the dog tracks???
@grayj84582 жыл бұрын
I’m using ur training videos to train my 8month old pit to hunt and he’s picking up very well. He’s very good at tracking the deer leg I drag throughout the field and yard. Longest drag I’ve done so far was 500yards. He has a great nose I just want him to constantly use it instead of using his eyes so much. I just started training him constantly to track for a week and I hope the things continue to go well. One question I do have for u and that is can I train him to track deer and rabbits/squirrels and ext or his he limited to the amount of animals he can hunt. He shows great potential
@DogBoneJeremyMoore2 жыл бұрын
I think dogs are capable of much more than we give them credit for, and the idea that a dog can only do one type of hunting is a myth. All our labs track deer, find and retrieve sheds, do duck and goose hunting, and hunt the uplands. They are also great family dogs. Across all these things there are very similar skill sets, which stem from the foundation. Once you have a solid foundation, I believe, the opportunities are endless. Hope this helps!

hey man my lab is 5 gonna be 6 he’s trained to be a bird dog, but his strength is finding dead birds he already knows “find it” and has found me more birds than i can count that i never would have found without him. my question is if i start training him to trail deer with the “find it” command would it mess with him finding ducks? so say i trained him to trial deer and he does good with it when i say “find it” if i’m out duck hunting and i say find it would he look for deer and forget about the ducks? or say if i’m out in the woods and need him to find a deer and there’s ducks around would he go trail them instead?

I'm starting a 3 mo old Yorkie mix, I read a lot of people like the small breeds because they are easier to follow on rough terrain because they are slower with their short legs and are easier to handle when they are pulling hard on the trail, also you can easily lift them over a fence or obstacles. right now we are focusing on walking on a leash and general obedience which can be a challenge with any terrier breeds . we have been taking long walks on the dirt Rd but I have been using a 25 foot tracking lead and I think I'm going to stop using that for just casual walks . I want him to associate the long leash with training and tracking. I wanted a dachshund because I'm familiar with the breed and they got that hound nose , but "SmoLs" was what I got, he was 5 weeks old and only a few ounces, I know the family and his parents are/were great dogs (mom got hit by a car in a rare accident where she slipped out the door) . I know the basics to training a trailing/tracking dog,as a teen I trained my basset mix with hot dogs and once he figured it out you could have a buddy drag a dead squirrel as far as you wanted to and he could find it lol. I'm wanting to learn more and from someone with the experience, that's why I'm here. I want to be able to put SmoLs and myself on the local registry for locating lost deer.

Definitely sounds like you are on the right track Eric! At the end of the day, we can only get so close to the real thing in training. We sell a tracking dog training system on our website (www.dogbonehunter.com) with all the tools and information you need to begin training your dog to track wounded deer. That being said, there are many different ways to do it! Ultimately, the dots connect on the real thing. I think training and laying the trails is as much for the handler as it is the dog itself, the dog "bringing out" their natural tracking ability and getting an idea of what scent to follow and what to ignore, while the handler learns how to read the dog. The dots connect on a real live track. As far as the lead, we like to keep the lead and even collar or harness for only times when we are tracking. This tells the dog that when this collar and leash are on, we are tracking. Similar to pavlov ringing the bell, and all the dogs start drooling because they know its feeding time. Hope this helps and best of luck!
