John...I'm loving these DobieMaster training segments!!! They make so much sense and it's really fun to see Cleopatra when she GETS IT!!! Thank you so much!!!!!

I’m loving the shorter version of the videos for this series, it’s much easier to find time to watch a 10 minute video! Plus the information is great and easy to understand so I can apply it with my dobie puppy! Love the channel, it’s been the biggest help!! :)

With my last two Dobermans, Jada and Brodie, I trained them to sit and wait on their food as I said a blessing over them! It was so sweet watching them to ever so patiently wait while I prayed! And Brodie would sit there drooling as I prayed! As soon as I said "Amen", I then gave them the command "OK", and boy, they were more than ready to chow down! It was so sweet though how they sat and waited so still for the "Amen" and then "OK"! Brodie would have a puddle of drool on the floor!🤗 I sure do miss my babies. I'd love another one but cannot afford to buy one now on my retirement income. It's sad.

Maybe you could rescue one?❤

Consider fostering. There are many Doberman rescues out there who are desperately looking for foster homes. You're helping a Doberman in need and in most cases the rescue covers all expenses.

That is so heartwarming..I am training mine to sit and wait for his meals but I love the thought of a blessing. Thanks for the idea.

That is so cute! Jada and Brodie sound like such sweet pups. You could try a rescue from a shelter or Doberman-specific rescue group, or fostering! They really are great companions. Especially for someone like you, who already knows what you're getting yourself into! ;)

Great video. A reliable recall and Leave It are certainly two most important commands for any dog. Some think they are just fancy tricks to demonstrate control of the dog but in reality they are all about keeping the dog safe. They do not know all of the dangers there are in the big world. Especially for a much maligned breed like the Donerman it is important to know that you can get your dog out of or keep your dog from a potentially dangerous situation. I also recommend teaching my dogs to sit and wait at meal time until I give them their release word before eating. Sometimes we will do a couple of 'puppy pushups' (a couple of consecutive downs and sits) followed by praise and then release so they feel like they have 'worked' for their meal and to reinforce that I am the giver of the good stuff.

Yes, great points, Sheilah! This is helpful advice for people struggling with dominance issues. Dobermans need a strong leader for sure!

Great episode! I know it is not easy, especially for new owners, but timing in training is crucial. The YESSS marker is a great tool to mark on time and it will give you a few seconds to get out the food because the dog knows it's coming. Make sure to say YESSS first and then reward. Eventually, the YESSS will become a reward by itself. So later on, you can fade out the food reward (or any other reward). It is still recommended to keep it unpredictable (means sometimes YESSS only, sometimes with food or a toy or touch/praise, and make sure it's random and not a pattern otherwise your Dobie has figured it out in no time😆). For the "leave it" command: after the dog understands, switch hands randomly and as they are progressing you can use the same food in both hands (keep the reward hand behind your back, the dog has to "unlock it" by looking into your eyes and not at the food).

This is good content. Lots of videos out there on issues like leash pulling but less stuff on leaving/dropping things they have in their mouth, and that is such an important one actually. Thanks for putting this out.

I've been using "Leave it" on walks because when Sammy was younger, he'd pick up anything he found on the ground. And he won't drop it. He'll hold it in his mouth until we get home. Sometimes he'll drop it while still outside to sniff something, but always tries to pick it back up if I don't pull him far enough away from it. But now he tends to ignore objects if I say "Leave it". He's even getting better when it comes to seeing the rabbits that inhabit the condo complex. He'll stop dead in his tracks when he sees one. He lowers his head and stares at it. Then ever so slowly, he'll take a step toward the rabbit. The rabbits are used to people so they don't run until you get 3 feet away from them. Sammy will eventually charge at them but I hold him back. But when I don't want to wait around while he stares down a rabbit for 10 minutes, I'll say "Leave it. You'll see him tomorrow. Say bye-bye." and he usually come with me. But not until he makes one last attempt to chase the rabbit.
@DobermanPlanet3 ай бұрын
That's great, Joe! Sounds like you're training Sammy to learn right from wrong and he's picking up on it so well! Rabbits are tempting!
@JoeR2033 ай бұрын
@@DobermanPlanet If I was younger I'd chase them myself. lol Sammy also knows directions. When out walking, I can say "Go left" or "Go right" and he'll turn on a dime and go in that direction. He's also good with "Upstairs" and "Downstairs".

Would love to see you guys teach Cleo a trick like sit pretty or maybe even BOING, like Tigger the Tiger, so she only gets rewarded for jumping when you actually ask her to jump. This can be particularly helpful for stubborn jumpers, but honestly her jumping seems to be much less. Having to think and use her brain helps with that as well - the Vito game maybe. Chirag Patel has a video on all 4 on the floor as well as one called talk to the shoe if they go to jump on someone else - seems silly but it works like a charm - have used it to get my boys in faster from outside and have even used it for off course in Rodeo Dog class - barrels and tunnels. Hope that helps.

??I will be getting a European Doberman soon and already talked to the breeder and just waiting for the time to pick my puppy from the litter any tips on what to look for thinking about doing sports anything helps???

Great question! Here is our article "How to Choose the Best Doberman Puppy from a Litter": www.dobermanplanet.com/how-to-choose-the-best-doberman-puppy-from-a-litter/ This will help. Congratulations on your new pup!
@robinrutherfordcost47483 ай бұрын
Not sure what sports you are thinking about, if Nose Work, check out Baebae's training - she's an actual judge whose Dobe puppies are winning titles in Nose Work already. Barn Hunt or Happy Ratters (urban version without straw bales) and Dobes do as good, if not better than even JRTs. Am on a waiting list at the moment for Agility Foundations - so many things to learn and practice before seeing any obstacles, especially jumps - not recommended for dogs under a year of age. Check out the Vito game. I also do Rodeo Dog - barrels and tunnels - so a bit less taxing on their joints and my memory and if you can get the pup loving the tunnels now when they don't have to duck to go through them, the less trouble you'll have when they actually do have to duck. Hope that helps.

Something I struggle highly with is getting my dog ( a small toy poodle like breed and for some reason I feel small dogs are more difficult to train, maybe ) to follow me on walks, the purpose of his walks is so he can enjoy outside but I also want to teach him to heel and follow me too by my side and not infront, he always walks infront but never pulls.
