Trains at Dawlish Station & Seawall - 20/08/23

Another glorious visit to Devon and Dawlish seawall for a day of sun, sea and trainspotting. Filmed on Sunday 20th August 2023.
With Cross Country HST's time almost up, just 4 weeks left in passenger service I thought I was due a trip to Devon to ride on a few of them as well as film them in action. On this day 3x sets were out and one of them had 2x Intercity repainted power cars, 43184 & 43007 on the same set. So look out for that. As well as the HST's there was a Steam charter train, hauled by the Scots Guardsman seen returning to Bristol Temple Meads from Par.
Notice the late running services from London, this was due to a person hit by a train in the Castle Cary area. Causing lots of delays throughout the afternoon on those services to/from London.

Lovectge HSTs in the original colours, but they don't look right with the Cross Country coaches. Shame they can't be like the GNER and have matching coaches to the livery

Why are CrossCountry getting rid of them? Some fatuous explanation about "carbon footprint", like GWR are claiming, hoping to score some worthiness points?

This is so wasteful and they even have the modified sliding doors. People might wise up to it one day.

Its also because they are quite expensive to maintain as they are coming up to 45 years old now so my guess is XC is finding it too expenisve to maintain them same with GWR

The metal itself is literally rotting, they are beyond repair. You cannot maintain something forever, eventually you'll be spending more maintaining it than it would cost to buy a new vehicle entirely. Diesel locomotives are not suitable for regional routes, and modern diesel electric trains have superior acceleration to locomotives or previous DMUs. They cannot keep up with timetables suited for IETs, because they're better suited for long distance travel between stops, and it causes issues with the mechanics of locomotives to stop frequently, I've been on many castle sets that have had a loco fail just after stopping in a station.

I love the fact GWR still cant get rid of the HSTs - IETs are universally disliked.

the seat comfort has improved now the fabric is worn in, and the suspension is fine on the main sections of the GWML east of Exeter.
