My dad and I wanted to go somewhere different, so we decided that we would go to the Metro-North Harlem Line for the first time. We made stops at Bedford, Katonah, and Chappaqua, and I was able to see eight trains. I missed a 4-car M3A deadhead at Katonah while getting lunch, and the heat was rough, but it was still a good day. I look forward to coming back to this line in the future.
1: Train 9627 rounds the bend past Green Lane in Bedford, NY with M7A 4301 leading the way, running a few minutes behind schedule. 4316 is trailing.
2: Train 9634 passes Green Lane with M7A 4060 leading. Trailing is 4309.
3: Train 9631 crosses Jay Street as it pulls into Katonah with M7A 4055 in charge. 4124 is at the end.
4: Train 9638 makes its stop with M7A 4292 on the point. Bringing up the rear is 4223.
5: Train 9635 arrives with M7A 4173 leading the way. Train 9642 pulls in at the same time, led by M7A 4316. 4301 is at the end of 9642, and 4039 is at the end of 9635.
6: Train 9639 races across Roaring Brook Road in Chappaqua 8 minutes early with M7A 4165 on the point. 4158 is at the end.
7: One of the light-up signs next to the crossing is seen to have been knocked out of alignment. This was caused by a U-Haul truck making a tight U-turn and hitting the sign after the driver learned that trucks aren't allowed on the Saw Mill River Parkway.
8: Train 9646 crosses Roaring Brook Road on Track 1 with M7A 4124 in charge. 4055 is at the end.

I'm surprised there aren't "HIGH VOLTAGE" warning signs for the Third rail, as close to crossings they get.!

I'd think having a 3rd rail on a mainline railroad would be a safety hazard to people and animals, since it's very easy for them to step on it, as opposed to overhead wires (especially animals since they don't know any better; most people would know better than to trespass along the tracks let alone touch the 3rd rail). In the subway it's different since it's mostly underground, or fenced off above ground, not out in the open like here, so it's a lot less likely for people or animals to accidentally touch it. Birds can land on overhead wires and not get electrocuted because they're not touching the ground, whereas someone touching the 3rd rail would most likely also be touching the ground and get thus get electrocuted.

The CONSTANT BELL NOISE AFTER CROSSING GATES GO DOWN, enough to drive a SANE PERSON BATTY.🤨 UPRR and BNSF gates in my area, only RING as the gates are going down or up, NOT CONSTANTLY! 🤠

I'm not a huge fan either, especially with e-bells. It was only in the past year that Metro-North changed the crossing to have the bells ring the whole time, too. In the past, nearly all of their crossings in New York would only have the bells ring until the gates went down.

Prior to moving to where I currently live, was 1 block from a UPRR main line, didn't mind the occasional train horn blowing before the 6 lane wide street crossing before they changed to a QUIET ZONE, but "Wayside Horns" aimed at the traffic flow towards my apartment was obnoxious & LOUDER than the locomotive horns, after COMPLAINTS, they now turn off the horns after gates close in both directions. 🤠

Nice catches! Looks like you still got a decent amount of action on the upper Harlem line with the essential schedule. Nice bells at Roaring Brook Road.

Thanks! One train each direction every hour isn't great, but it still provides a decent amount of trains to see.

The line is usually better when it’s rush hour back in the full weekday service since you have the WASSAIC Directs in the mix of the line

Sweet video. I used to railfan those crossings in Mt. Kisco and Chappaqua over 5 years ago.

Thank you. There are definitely a good amount of videos from the Harlem Line out there, but it doesn't seem to be as well documented as the Hudson Line or New Haven Line.

Is this an electric train? I don't see an engine.

Each axle is powered individually, which is why they can accelerate to track speed as fast as they do.

What exactly are the grade crossing requirements in NY? I noticed some of them had the bells stay on while others silenced once the gate was lowered?
