Yes, in an interview in 'The guitar amp handbook' by Dave Hunter, he stated that he sold his amps for around 1000 usd back in 91. He earned more repairing amps, than making them... Like with Dumbles... most prices skyrocket while the builder himself doesn't get all that money.. hence those builders become very picky on clientele.

In the late '80s, Ken Fischer was the local amp guy here. We were into Trainwrecks when you could call Ken in Colonia and have trouble getting off the phone with him. So you cry some more. These are fantastic amps that deserve to be understood, not worshipped as luxury items.

Ahhh, the 20 watt greenbacks!....my favorite cab/speaker setup was a 4x12 with 014 cone 20 watters...GREAT note separation, plus the 20 watt greenbacks help tame the volume levels some.....I remember seeing some of your videos AirBloom, and you got some amazing sounds, you're a GREAT guitar player...KILLER gear sure helps, but you obviously put in the time learning to play.....Boy oh boy, do I ever regret selling that cab:-(

In 1989, Ken's price was $1200, and he told me he was keeping it low on purpose, even though existing Trainwrecks were selling at a premium. The issue at that time was getting one right away, vs. waiting for one to be built. Later I think he had a need to generate cash for medical bills. He wasn't really interested in money.

All of them sounded great. Nice even ordered harmonics with tasty overtones. The EL84 model definitely sounded a bit sweeter over all to me. I like the older boogie sound more than the newer fancier stuff but overall find their harmonic voicings a tad too rich for my taste. I like a more fundamental overdrive like an old beat to shit bassman or marshall sound. These trains have a complex overdriven sound but not too "precious" or "sugary" for lack of a better description. One Mesa amp I really dig though is the Lone Star although I've never had a chance to plug into one.

By the way I live just around the corner from Mr. Fishcher's original shop. I'm around the corner in Irvine, Ca. Tustin is a stone's throw from here. When I found out where it was I cruised over to see if there was a honarearium or museum there. Nope.

The only solution to this trend I can see is to build as many clones of these amps as possible. I know Ken would be looking down at all of us who do with a hint of approval, knowing that we are carrying on with his legacy of what it means to make for musical amplifiers that every man will have access to.

Awesome demo. Thanks for that! I see many comments here by people writing that no amp could be worth $40k. I can tell you that many pro guitarists make more than $100k/year, and to them, the purchase of the amp is a tax write-off against earnings. Some of those same guitarists are divorced, and their ex-wife would get a portion of their earnings. Top level guitarists are pretty intelligent people, managing to succeed in a very competitive career field. They have the choice of buying just about any amp they like, and have played most of the mass-produced amps available. Since they buy amps like Trainwreck or Dumble for high prices, there must be a good reason for them to do that. The reason is probably not they want to artificially inflate amp prices, and it's not that they are getting paid for an endorsement. It might be that the amp is the best at getting a sound they are looking for.

Ken Fischer did not want his amps to become worth as much as they did. He wanted them to be played by the working musician not sit unplayed in a rich collector music room next to a 57' strat signed by Eric Clapton and framed Woodstock tickets. I know nothing about the company today and have never met Ken himself but my information comes from two close friends of his who I had the pleasure to meet and speak with.

@HollaJo3
@HollaJo3 9 жыл бұрын
dallas austin Ken Fisher lent Billy Gibbons an Express named "Sarah". It was so good that Gibbons refused to give it back, in spite of Fisher's requests. Even though Fisher told Gibbons that the amp wasn't for sale, Gibbons opted to send Fisher money, rather than return the amp, effectively stealing it. That's how good it was. These guys buy and sell gear all the time. Gibbons, in particular, has so many guitars and amplifiers that he doesn't even know what he owns anymore. Original, Fisher-built Trainwrecks have jumped from $2,000 to $5,000 to $20,00 to $42,000. At a certain point, it makes sense to sell even if the amp sounds spectacular and even if you're already comfortable. Those guys would sell any of their other amps too if someone was willing to pay $42,000 for it.

$$$ the almighty. in our lovely capitalist system selling a 'modded blackface spec' that has the precious pedigree 'made for George Lynch' 'owned by Billy Gibbons' with "Trainwreck" or "Dumble" is worth more than the sound imho. class A circuit basically a copy of a vox ac30. Those work best when you put a boost in front of it like a bright boost like Brian May used to do. That bright boost also tightens up the low end.. One of the advantages of a class A amplifier is it works well with cathode bias. When you push the front of the amplifier and you push that amp the cathode bias gives you a nice singing quality lot of sustain again like Brian May. Not that heavy metal crunch sound a completely different sound that ken Fisher actually loved and that was eventually his favorite sound.

I'm the guy who got Ken to build "Suzanne" for George Lynch. George lived right down the street from me in Phoenix in 1991, and I would always see him at the local "Bizarre Guitar" I told him about Trainwreck amplifiers, and since I knew Ken, I had him build him this Express. Lynch was foolish for letting this amp go.

@@hondared88 If you knew anything about Trainwreck amplifiers, you would know that anyone who parts with one... for whatever reason... is indeed a fool. Ken built "Suzanne" with much more gain than he usually did with the Express, so I can't imagine why Lynch would have sold it. And as far as I know... George does not currently own a Trainwreck, especially since they are fetching upwards of $40,000+ IF you can even find one for sale. Trainwreck amplifiers are even more revered than the Dumble Overdrive Special. Regards
@hondared88
@hondared88 4 жыл бұрын
Scott Dunn....I actually do know a little about Trainwrecks and yes, I do agree with you that getting rid of one would seem to be foolish to the normal guitarist but I also know that it's not my place to judge why or question reasons as we really don't know and I'm also pretty sure George does own another Trainwreck as I've seen him in countless videos over the past couple of years with him playing live with one and in videos and pictures of him with it in his studio. So, it's relatively easy to think that he is the owner, since it's in his possession in so many videos and pictures. Just because it had more gain doesn't mean that it had the desired tone and sustain that Trainwrecks are famous for. Yes, it's extremely rare and quite a costly collectible head. I did asked him a question about "Suzanne" and George mentioned that with the extra gain that it changed the tonality of the amp that Trainwrecks were desired for, in so many words. Which is probably why he has a different Trainwreck that produces something closer to what he hears in his head and chases everyday in search for that quintessential tone. Now, I know that John Mayer has sold a Dumble to Keith Urban after Keith lost a bunch of gear from the Nashville flood that wiped out that storage space a while back. Does that make John a "fool" for getting rid of a Dumble as I see Dunbles and Trainwrecks pretty equal in terms of rarity and price. I'm sure George doesn't have the bankroll as John does in terms of being a paid artist but George is no slouch in being a known guitarist. So, who are we to be calling who a fool when it comes to a record artist who makes a living at this than say a normal person like you or I?! Yeah, we would be quite the fool to get rid of one as just a normal working class individuals but George is an artist who has a longtime signature guitar line at ESP, probably could get any type of endorsement and royalties from any manufacturer if he so desired. Don't think the fool fits when we really don't know shit about what he can acquire, sell, trade or access when it comes to gear. Just my two cents.

Yeah the triple your money back original purchase price, Oké so for what price did you purchase them from Ken if I may ask? To my knowledge Ken charged very reasonable prices, and did not go along with the hype. at one point in time he even sold amps way under his price if he knew the amp would be on a studio record with a proper musician instead of a rich man's basement. I have built a Trainwreck clone for under $1000 and it really rocks, but is very sensitive to picking dynamics. Very revealing to the nuisances or suckiness of my playing . I needed to mod the gain stages to bring it down a little bit. The original Trainwrecks like their clone brethren go from clean to harmonic raging bull all with the control of the guitar volume. No other amps do this. Think hot rodded plexi but with a lot more second/third order harmonics

The tone alone is fantastic but in reality, top notch amplifier tone shouldn't cost more than two or three thousand dollars, hell even less a lot of the times. These trainwreck amps also had those beautiful wooden headshells, so they can be credited for a great sound and look. However, the only reason they are too expensive for us is the low production. Collectors can look to buy one of these all they want, but I'm okay with just this video for my trainwreck fix. Plenty of other amps out there. Cheers from Kentucky.

they are rare, and homemade. they were made famous by famous people that is all it is and ever is…every amp and guitar in history is famous because someone made it so…people latch on to the player and their sound. the fan begins to want that. eventually the amps become legendary from desirable. one amp most people don't know about is the matchless chieftain in 410. i have one and its far more rare than this amp in the video. only about 25 were made in that configuration. but i have to say the train wreck tone is so smooth. someone tuned these amps on a special meter to get those frequency arches.

+John Robie Its a modified copy of a blackface fender bassman. Marshall copied the first tweed fender bassman verbatim (JTM45), and the rest of Marshall's models spawned from that design. No surprise it sounds similar.

I'm probably going to get some shit for this, but I think the Dr. Z Z Wreck does these amps justice as far as touch sensitivity goes. But why shouldn't they since Ken helped design it.

Crazuy good sounding amps. I like the first one "suzanne" most, with les paul, if i had the money i would seriously consider buying that one.

Actually some of the Ceriatone clones are a lot less than $1500. As for the Dumble perhaps being nothing more than a Dual Shoman....that can't be a secret....how many great players are leaving their Dumbles at home and sticking an OD in front if a nice Fender?

Are you refering to Glen Kuykendall or this guy Jeff.I love Glen K,he plays the holy crab out of his TW,this guy jeff you can see he is simply demoing the amp and has no real experience getting it to sound like Glens K.

I actually used to talk to Ken Fisher believe it or not the guy who built that amplifier.. I know exactly what it is and how he built it. I know the exact schematic he copied it from. People used to think he copied it from a Marshall plexi amplifier because that's the way it sounded. But was simply copied from the bass channel of a roughly 1964 fender basman head!! All he did was modify the caps and resistors to get rid a lot of the bass added a mid-range control and presence that in the original schematic were resistors. And obviously was obsessed with other factors like using solid core wire, and layout.. You could tell easily because it goes from clean to dirty with one knob. That fender bassman schematic the way fender did it on the fender bass side had the tone controls in between the gain stages.. that's why fender amplifiers didn't have as much gain as Marshall the tone controls would take out the gain as you use them. So if you turn the tone controls it would actually turn the gain up and down along with the frequencies in the normal channel they would be very little gain because of this. But in the bass channel Leo fender added one more gain stage after the tone controls to get some gain back!! This setup was excellent to make an high Gain amplifier and that's exactly what Ken Fisher did. If you notice in a typical Marshall plexi the tone controls are at the end which is why they don't do a lot and don't affect the gain as much therefore you get more gain more distortion.. but you also got a lot of uncontrollable bass that's why a lot of people put a distortion pedal in front of Marshall amplifiers to tighten up the low end with the tone control.. You will notice with the fender design with the extra gain stage at the end and the tone controls robbing one of the gain stages. When you turn the bass down you can actually get rid of the loose bottom end and some of the bass gain.. this is also case for the middle and treble controls.. with this type of design you really don't need a distortion pedal in the front of the amplifier to tighten up the low end cuz you really can control the gain in the tone at the same time in specific frequencies.. KEN FISHER WAS SMART BY USING THIS DESIGN FOR A HIGH GAIN AMP. It really is crazy how people went nuts about this very simple design that Ken Fisher stole from fender bass channel on the fender bassman head and made an amplifier out of it.. Such a simple design he really didn't do much more than basically copy the plexi capacitors and resistors and keep the fender design just to strip out some of the bass and just made a whole amp out of it. I think he was selling these amplifiers for around $2,000 back in the day Now they're worth $10,000 because he died and there's a mystique about them Ken was great a great amp builder known as a guru you really thought a lot of things made a difference like solid core versus stranded wire where is other engineers think it doesn't make a difference. But anyways just thought I'd give you my insight. FYI on my 1964 fender bassman head I actually installed a pot on the gain stage and took the resistor out so I can get as much gain as I need. A true powerhouse virtuoso amplifier and the genius Leo fender did it again was ahead of his time and he didn't even know it. 😂🤣😂🤣
