About the Project:
Join me as we create a map rich with natural beauties, distant towns and a bustling metropolis. The aim is to create an island that feels as big as a state or territory, including vast biomes, mountains, rivers and an endless coastline. Set in Australia and New Zealand (maybe an island in between), this map takes inspiration from open world video games and the way in which the game devs create such immersive environments, such as GTA 4 and 5, Red Dead Redemption 2 and the Mafia 4 maps. To take it one step further, every thing on the map should feel unique and distinct. No city district, town or mountain should feel or look the same.

@@TheCriminalViolin why do you prefer busses? Do you think they're better in every use case?
@TheCriminalViolin
@TheCriminalViolin 2 жыл бұрын
@@Dongonzales123 Almost all cases they're better when talking local service within a city, and even a city's close in suburbs, when done right (meaning BRT, which is bus only lanes, priority at signals, high-capacity buses, no less that 12 minutes between each bus, and a automated system that takes pictures of vehicles which are within the bus lanes, and generates a report to the police who have strong enforcement against violators giving them harsh penalties). I would say the only proper instance where Rail should used is for longer distance services, from a city center to another city center, or further (regional or interstate highspeed, or international highspeed). Of course, most transit planners and other like-minded people strongly disagree with me on it, but I do to their assessment as well.
@fribbon7027
@fribbon7027 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheCriminalViolin You‘re definitely not wrong about that, busses are awesome. I do think they work best in combination with other transit systems tho. Light rail is necessary in any city over 1M inhabitants imo. Here they usually serve to connect busy parts of the city underground and then often continue on the surface as trams, arriving at an interval of every 5 minutes. They usually go as far as into the suburbs or even neighboring small towns. They’re also used as ring lines to provide interconnectivity with the other bus/rail lines. We also have an elevated train system that has fewer stops and connects larger stations and neighboring city centers with one another. You cannot build these systems at every corner cause that would be excessive and unsustainable, so busses fill in those „in between“ routes and areas light rail cannot easily reach really nicely. Just busses would be inefficient and just light rail would be equally inefficient in my opinion. So they’re a nice team

Trams looping around a balloon loop is quite common on older tram system (the same goes for metro). It's quite common in Europe where you have tramway network that dates back to the 19th century. On the contrary, new networks tends to favour trams with driving seats on both ends to avoid balloon loops.
@eechauch5522
@eechauch5522 Жыл бұрын
Many tram networks have loops, especially those where the trams can only go into one direction, which is very common here in Germany. This has the advantage of only needing doors on one side, giving you a bit more space inside the vehicle. Also the vehicles could a bit simpler, since they don’t need a reverse drivers cab, but nowadays most of the trams can technically reverse, they just usually don’t in regular service.

@@unseen2880 a rigorously clear distinction doesn’t really exist, but trams usually share the right-of-way with cars on streets, while Light Rail has an exclusive right-of-way, with at-grade crossings. Also Light Rail vehicles are usually wider and longer, with higher capacity compared to trams. They’re usually faster too

We can name Not!George Street as either Elizabeth Street or Victoria Street. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide all have the former. Adelaide has Victoria Square, Melbourne, VIC and Hamilton/Cambridge NZ have Victoria Street, Sydney has Victoria Road. Grafton is another - there is A Grafton Street in Cairns/Warwick (QLD) and Coffs Harbour (NSW) - both main streets (and the latter is part of the Pacific Highway). There is a Grafton Road in Auckland.

Instead of looping trams at depots, maybe fly around toronto for some inspiration. All of the streetcars in Toronto only have cabs on one side so they need to loop and can’t just turn around. We have some pretty small tight low key loops like high park, long branch, Cherry, or Neville loops, some loops are at subway stations like at Main Street, Broadview, or Dundas West stations. We also have two underground loops at Union and Spadina stations. Hope those help☺️

You should take a look at the "Dortmund Stadtbahn" network which is organizing 8 tram / light rail lines in 3 trunk lines that intersect in three different transfer stations in the city center though unfortunately the central station ("Hbf" on German maps) is none of that - so do not copy that aspect. And expanding the tram network also means cutting back the bus network because parallel services are more expensive. In the end your bus network could almost look like the tram network around Paris ("Tramways in Île-de-France" on English Wikipedia) - torn apart and mainly giving access to higher capacity transit (Paris Metro and RER, metro and tram in Oceania).

I'll say it again because I really hope you see it- to make the metro line look even more like a former industrial branch, the line after "circular quay" should join to the main line somewhere in the suburbs, as industrial freight needs to get onto the branch somehow. Whether the metro trains still run from circular quay to a railway-metro interchange somewhere in the suburbs or the rest of the line is overgrown weeds, abandoned tunnels, and rusting bridges, that's up to you. But, I think that's important storywise.

If you want more people to use trams (and other transports except bus) you should try make the bus Lines shorter in distance. Bus stopp can go from tram stop to places not covered by public transport. There is probably no need for buses in the sentrum now, so to reduce traffic in there, let metro and tram do their thing. Perhaps the Bombora lines should be extended or merged. The shorter Bombora line can be merged with the port line for a shorter commute into the CBD. And then the longer Bombora line can bypass the Main Station in favour of the Olympic Park to go down the originally planned coastal route. That'll make it more of a sightseeing line, with contrasting waterfronts for tourism, CBD, and industry - excellent for a cinematic ride!
