Well that saved me the question on the windshield, thanks. I found your channel yesterday and watched a couple of episodes. I love my mini trangia, when I travel I take it with me for cooking meals. Its versatile and sometimes I take a stainless steel bowl which also fits around the outside perfectly. It gives an extra cooking option. Just subbed.

Excellent recipe, I'll give it a try. If I'm only doing a day hike/bike tour/fishing trip or just an overnighter, I do all the prep at home first and put my ingredients in zip lock bags. Saves a lot of faff and weight on the trail. For example, with this recipe I'll have the chopped onion, mushroom, butter and oil in one bag (they can all cook at once), then the floured meat and pancetta in another. I'd do that all in the pot. Then the mash in the pan (with a raw egg stirred into it). Thanks for the video and the inspiration.

Excellent recipe! Proper cooking is half the pleasure of camping IMHO. One way to stretch your fuel might be to give it a while in a pot cosy? Or simply wrap the pot in a blanket, sleeping bag or even a wooly hat. I've even done oxtail stew that way (which ideally needs a four hour simmer...) Thanks for great content.

At last a good camp cook! I've seen vids where someone just threw in far too much in which there were meat and veg in overlarge bits, no decent prep or pre-cooking which meant that it was a two-hour wait for the second class meal! You have brought some real sense to the process. Loads of good tips. If folk follow your way, they will have feast.. Cracking video, Luke. Perhaps worth mentioning that to cook a stew in camp on a Trangia you do need two burners to keep the flame going. Refilling a hot one is a no-no and can end in tears!.

Hello from this side of the pond. Good to see you using the TRANGIA 28T. I seriously ❤️ my 28T. Over here, most people just boil water for dehydrated foods with the mini. Not me!👍. I bought it to "cook" the foods I like --- just in smaller portions. The extra ⏳ it takes is well worth it for the meal flavors you can whip up in it. I've even made deep fried chicken breasts (coated in cornflakes, milk, and flour) in my 28T. Also Stuffed Green Peppers In Tomato Sauce served with rice is another favorite. The Menu options are nearly endless if you are not in a "boil and eat" hurry. Having the little kettle addition is great for fresh ground pour over coffee, hot chocolate, or a tea ball of fresh tea. Btw, there is a tiny 5"x 5" Bushcraft grill that fits well over top of the 28T. I use it for more pot size options like camp cups, etc.👏🙌 In short...I ❤️ ❤️❤️ it.

Good lord I can almost smell that! I've got a mini and it's rapidly replacing my 27 for solo stuff (which is the majority of what I do). I've just cooked tortellini and bacon on it. I've just bought the Vargo mini windshield after watching your video and seeing how it stows away inside the mini, chatting with @Mattias Eriksson Braap&Camp and watching Paleo Hiker MD's video showing the impact of using a windshield with an alcohol stove. In terms of fuels, I've been using La Hacienda bioethanol in mine for about year, and the usual purple metho when I run out. The La Hacienda stuff is sold by B&Q in the UK but must be available elsewhere. They sell it for use in patio/garden heaters. Fabulous video.

Another delicious recipe from Luke. Thank you for the video. I would like to know what do you burn as a fuel. If I burn denaturated alcohol, the Trangia burner burns so powerful that you risk to burn whatever on the pot or pan. Therefore I always need to use the simmer ring. However, you burn "something" that burns very clean with gentle flame power that doesn't turn your into charcoal :). Do you add some water in it?

The 'low heat' fuel that you are using has it's advantages for long slow cooking .. eggs and such too. Likewise Meths, the Alcohol Fuel (Brennsprit) that we get here in Switzerland burns like an Inferno .. even with the Simmer Ring. When I need a lower temperature heat source, I use 'Sicherheitsbrennpaste' (Gel Fuel). I've always loved Smash .. but then I survived Boarding School Cuisine and thus am able and willing to eat almost anything without blinking. Looks good 👍 .. must give it a try .. thanks 😊.

Should check out seasoning the pot. I did with mine an it works wonders without barely anything sticking. Used regular veg cooking oil. An home oven on broil to get it hot as it could go. And the stove top burner on high. Stuck it in the oven a little, pulled it out to the stove top, than wiped it down with napkin with oil. Heated the bottom of the pot an leaned it around on the sides on the burner. Than wiped it an into the oven on broil 5-10 minutes. Than back out same thing on the stove top on high again. Than back in the oven. After 6-8 times. It has a golden honey color of the oil baked onto it. Most of everything I’ve cooked in it since, with a touch of oil/butter as you would with a nonstick. Just about nothing sticks. An anything hearty to soups. No bad flavor from the oil baked on an it isn’t slowly coming off into each dish any that I can see.

Great video. There’s not been any methylated spirits (=alcohol denatured with methanol) legally sold in the EU sine 2015- it’s because the rules changed so that rather than being made poisonous, the ethanol was sold with chemicals that made it so biter that it is undrinkable. Wikipedia has the full story about this. I wonder if the difference in performance in the video was because the original fuel was older and had absorbed some atmospheric water?
@markb83604 жыл бұрын
Mate! Looks killer and well done for getting all that cooked on a Trangia mini. For Irish stew, try adding some thyme and carrots. The carrots are sweet and balance the bitterness of the Guinness. Thyme is what make it though. Regardless, your stew was stunning

instant mashed potato has improved greatly on both sides of the pond, i too remember bad instant potatoes from my childhood... terrible stale flavor, a gloppy/gooey texture like wallpaper paste and no amount of butter or cream would fix it. i don't know about the uk but here in the states we can also get packets of pre-flavored potatoes that just require boiling water and taste great without having to add anything extra.

Quick question. If the Trangia cooking system uses pot, pans and kettles made from Aluminium then you are poisoning yourself with aluminium oxide. Even the non stick surface coating (Teflon) on the upmarket Trangia cookware is cancer causing, so are you aware of this?. Chiefs etc are not permitted to cook with Aluminium, copper or Teflon coating. Only Stainless steel, cast-iron or pure ceramic cookware can be used. My Trangia gear has been thrown out other than the burner and now I use the MSR stainless cooking gear. Love your videos
@ReluctantRider3 жыл бұрын
Aluminium only causes harm if lots leaches into the food. The food needs to be acidic, the pot pitted, and the person eating out of it lots to consume several grams of aluminium. Not worried. My dads used his for decades and he's 66 years old without health issues. So I guess I have actual evidence it's not an issue while you have 2nd hand reports on Google. Teflon, there is no proof that modern Teflon causes cancer, so again not worried. I tend not to let these things bother me too much. Go down that rabbit hole and I wouldn't be using my phone, touching my ipad, or getting my covid vaccine.
