In Episode 143 of ‘Cars, Shops & Collections’ we meet up with Troy to see his 1979 Pontiac Trans Am Y84 Edition!
Ever since he first saw ‘Smokey & The Bandit’ Troy has been in love with the Trans Am, he finally fulfilled his boyhood dream and purchased his 1979 Pontiac Trans Am from Mecum Auctions in 2023.
Troy walks us through the bidding process, the delivery of his TA, gives us a bumper-to-bumper showcase and a ride along!
This 1979 Pontiac Trans Am features a 400 CI V-8 engine, 4-Speed Manual Transmission, Starlight Black Exterior and Camel Tan Interior. PLUS it has the rare Y84 Special Edition Appearance Package. It is 1 of 1,107 Trans Am’s built with a 400 V-8 and a 4 speed manual transmission.
This TA had a comprehensive frame-off rotisserie restoration by J&S restorations of Cleveland, Ohio completed in August of 2023.
Troy’s personality and passion for TA’s shines in this episode! I hope you enjoy watching because we absolutely had a blast filming it!
👍 THANK YOU for watching ‘Cars, Shops & Collections!’ Each week we put the spotlight on unique cars and the people behind them!

I also own a 79 Y84 Special edition Trans Am with the W72 400/4-speed package. Been my dream car since seeing Smokey and the Bandit. My car is a project that I bought from the original owner's estate,who was my grandparents' neighbor. Its mostly complete, but in need of a restoration. I have most of the original documentation on it, including the build sheet and the original warranty signed January 12, 1979.

My first car when I was a senior in high school was a 1994 black V6 Firebird. After graduation, I moved with my family to Ohio and discovered the Trans Am Nationals car show and truly fell in love with these cars. 25 years later, I still own nothing but several fourth gen Firebirds. Thanks for sharing, and I can't wait until the next Firebird video.

Beautiful Trans Am! So proud to say I lived in Jonesboro Georgia 2 miles from Snowman's house the summer of '76 {moved to Covington Spring of '77 home of the Dukes of Hazzard where I was in the 1st episode 1978 & Cannonball Run that I can be seen in 1981} when they filmed Smokey & the Bandit & was lucky enough to see that Trans Am coming out the back of the trailer & got to see the Bandit again right before he passed at the 45th anniversary of SATB in 2017 in Jonesboro! I was finally able to afford my 1st new T/A in 1985, a black/gold Bandit II Edition for $9000 that I drove until 1998 when I finally sold it with 275,000 miles & was still in good shape as I took care of it! My 1st car when I was 15 was a 1967 metallic blue/black interior Firebird 326 HO for $1200 that I paid for cutting grass & bagging groceries at our local A&P ✌💖☮

@@CarsShopsAndCollections thanks, was a great car & never left me stranded plus it was a chic magnet & got me 'laid' many times! Never thought that much of a 305 HO but I cant knock the reliability! In Dukes of Hazzard right where the General Lee comes sliding onto the Covington Square me & my dad are standing right there on the corner {KZbin video Dukes Of Hazzard : Chase From 1st Episode} & in Cannonball Run Burt Reynolds lands his plane to get beer on the Covington Square & I can be seen with the group of folks on the curb as Dom DeLouise walks behind the plane as it starts to turn around {KZbin video Cannonball Plane}

Enjoyed the video of this beautiful 79 SE TA. FYI, the wider 15x8 Snowflake wheels were not part of the Y84 option. Y84 is the black car with gold stripes, gold dash, steering wheel spokes, gold emblems, and gold on the front grilles, and the Fisher t-tops. So, it was mainly an appearance package. The 15x8 wheels were part of the optional WS6 handling and suspension package. So, this car apparently has the WS6 package, so that's why it has the 15x8 wheels. Wheels can be changed, so can't say for sure that it has WS6 without looking at a few more things on the car. WS6 had rear disc brakes (rear drums were standard), and a larger 3/4" diameter rear sway bar, for example. Should also have lower front control arm braces, and quicker, constant ratio steering. There was even a WS7 package which include everything mentioned except for rear disc brakes. You could get a Y84 without the WS6 package, and it still would be a Y84, but with the standard 7" wide wheels. Original t-top bags are black leather with a large Fisher body carriage emblem, like the carriage you see on the door sill plates, embossed on the leather.

NICE, I bought a brand new 1977 Can Am back when new and back then in 1977 drove it to see Smokey and the Bandit one night with my girlfriend and i still always wanted a Burt Reynolds 77 TA after seeing that movie. I learned to LOVE my Can Am though after finding out how rare they were. Only 1377 Can Am's produced. How do you like your S.P. Challenger? I am thinking of purchasing one of the last new 2023 Scat Pack Challengers and would like to hear some thoughts on yours and if i should buy one or get a new Mustang? thank you for the viewing of this guys TA. !!!!! OH wish he would have started it up with the camera guy behind it, wanted to hear the exhaust note. couldn't hear anything inside the car really on exhaust pipes/mufflers.

Those chrome plastic hex caps on there aren't original for a 79 with Snowflake wheels. They should be round stainless metal caps to be completely original. The stainless ones fit a little tighter. In 79, the hex caps were only used on the 79 Turbo wheel on the Tenth Anniversary TA special edition (TATA). In 1980 and 1981, the hex caps became the standard center cap for Snowflake wheels. The reproduction hex caps can fit a little loose, and it helps to add some silicone adhesive where they snap onto the wheel to keep them from rattling and from falling off.

I ordered new Z/28’s rather than TA in 77, 78 and 80. All 4 speeds. Where’s the jack in the trunk? The blue block was also used in the Camaro from 1977-81. Why they ditched the Chevy orange is beyond me. My 1st Z/28 I bought was in 1974 while attending College. It was a 1968 Z/28, British Green with white stripes and black interior. A friend of mine is the current owner. But I still own my 1970 non RS Z/28 that I bought from the original owner in 1981. Yes of course it’s a 4 speed. I would never buy an automatic trans in a performance car. That’s a girls thing.😂 Also the original owner wants his car back but it’s not for sale. He keeps asking me when I run into him at some shows. My 1st car in 1973 was a 1963 SS 2 door Nova. Maroon with black w/buckets w/console interior. Cost me $50.

Back in 77, I bought a brand new 77 Malibu Classic and it came with a blue engine too. Surprised me at the time. Since then, I've read the reason they changed to blue Chevy engines was because GM was starting to swap engines around in their different car brands. Like Chevy engines in Oldsmobiles, Buick V6 engines in Firebirds, Olds 403 engines in Trans Ams are some examples. So, GM came up with the "Corporate Blue" color and painted all their engines that same blue color starting in 77. Reason I've heard was so less knowledgeable customers couldn't easily tell what engine was in the car they bought. I believe it was in 78 that an Oldsmobile customer or customers sued GM because the Olds they bought had a Chevy engine. Coincidentally, a friend of mine has a 63 Nova SS convertible, white with red interior.

6.6 litre engine?
@grand73am
@grand73am Ай бұрын
Yes, but it's a Pontiac 6.6, in other words, a Pontiac 400. Notice that the decal on the shaker says "TA/6.6". That is the correct decal for a 79 TA with the Pontiac 400 engine. The Pontiac 400 was being phased out, so there were only about 8600 Pontiac 400's left over from 1978 and available to sell in 79 Trans Ams. 1979 would be the last year for the 400. Pontiac decided to only offer these last 400's with a 4 speed manual transmission. So, this car has a 400 with a 4 speed. Since there were so few 400's left for 1979, Pontiac installed Oldsmobile 403 engines as the standard engine in the vast majority of 79 Trans Ams. That way they could still have a large displacement engine in a Trans Am. The 403 only came with an automatic. Almost 95,000 came with Olds 403 engines in 79. A 79 Trans Am with the 403 had a different shaker decal that said "6.6 Litre". And by the way, 79 was also the last year for the Olds 403 too. No more big engines after 1979 😞.
