This is one of most interesting series I've seen on KZbin. Can't wait until the next episode(s)! Great to see the vastness of Russia as one sees it through a train window. Going to have to give the Trans-Sib a try - my (Polish) girlfriend is fluent in Russian and loves the language. Maybe Berlin - Moscow (pause of a few days at a couple of places en route) - Beijing, train to Hong Kong, fly via Singapore or Thailand to Oz or New Zealand - one can only dream! Thanks again, Doc, for this and other fascinating vidoes! Cheers, "Brit in Berlin".

So pity you didn't stay in Krasnoyarsk. There's mountain park Stolby, on the right bank of Yenissey, worth visiting for a 3-4 hours walk. There's also a 100-meter-tall dam in 50 km from there, even with a ship elevator, worth visiting for engineering fan. Anyway, was interesting to see your observations, come again!

I dont find landscapes to be desolate. I think that they are starkly beautiful. And inspiring. People were able to build large cities in such difficult conditions; people even thrive in such places. And then they have build this incredible railroad to connect through such vast distances.

Another very beautiful and informative video!!! But surely the train takes longer than just over a day to get from Novosibirsk to Moscow? That would give an average speed of almost 140 km/h. The "European Rail Timetable" shows train 5 taking almost 46 hours running time to reach Moscow - leaves Novosibirsk at 20.09, arrives Moscow 13.58 two days later, and add 4 hours for the difference in time zones.

I wanted to see the exact route the train had to take from Ulan-Bator (but google maps dont have pathfinding from Ulan-Bator. So I followed the rail myself. It goes up norh and hugging the river Kharaa (probably) then river Orhon and finally river Selenga and it emerges in Zaudinskij, Ulan-Ude, Buryatiya Rep. So this train goes from the Ulad-ude on the same route to Irkutsk as you took (alongoside lake Bajkal). I think it has to be pretty scenit route from Ulan-Bator to Ulan-Ude.

at 23:39. you mention the Yenisey at 3438km is longest river flowing into Arctic Ocean The Mackenzie river in Canada is listed as 4241km and also flows into Arctic Ocean near Inuvik/Toktoyaktuk. However, reading more about it, that 4241 number include tributaries and the river itself is only 1738km between Great Slave Lake and Arctic Ocean. So it is interssting how statistics can be miselading since some rivers are listed with the trubutaries and some without. It appears the 3438 of Yenesey os the main stem, and with its tributaries, is longer than 5000km.

@@doc7austin according to my experience (I rode only Russian (federal passenger company) trains) if you buy a ticket in advance (when it's not on its way yet) you never need to print anything, you just come to a station an show your ID to a conductor. If you buy a ticket for a passing train (e.g. Krasnoyarsk to Novosibirsk while a train is Severobaikalsk - Moscow) when it has already departed from it's first station (Severobaikalsk) you have to print a ticket on a printing terminal or a ticket office. I hope the mess above is readable enough.

@MatveyTsivinyuk 5 жыл бұрын
@@doc7austin for example the train departs from station A to station B at 1:00. It passes station C at 16:00. You can buy a ticket from C to B before 15:45 (AFAIK). If you buy it before 0:00 (AFAIK), you can use an electronic registration, otherwise you have to print a paper ticket.
