I tried to save this painted monstrosity... DID I SUCCEED THOUGH? 😬

This dresser (and matching night stands) needed a LOT of attention and it really begs the question... "is it worth it?"
I think so.. at least in the way I decided to refinish this dresser for a more modern makeover. Hopefully, it will live on now for many more years instead of being destined for the trash heap!
I stripped, scraped, and sanded the old paint and finish off, made numerous repairs to the drawers and had to make all new wooden drawer guides, added both stain AND a custom mixed paint colour, and DIY'd this thing into 2025. Thanks for watching!

There isn’t anything low end with the finished piece. I love that stain and the grain of the wood on the top. The color choice for the lower part is a true complement to the upper. When I first saw the mess you paid $100 for, I was like, “Why?” But you always trust your instincts and the process even when it hasn’t come together yet to show the connection. Changing the skirt was a good call. I like the paint colour and it actually looks great with the hardware. I'm not huge into the two-tone look and would have preferred paint all over. But I appreciate how you saved this piece for someone new to love it.

You know, I've been following you for some years because I've always had a love for furniture restoration. When I was young in the early 80's my mom and dad restored a vintage china cabinet from the 40's maybe earlier and it was in our house ever since. Since then I too have been into restoration. I restored an early 19th or maybe even 18th century writing desk made from pure hardwood, Tiger Oak. It turned out wonderful with brand new drawer pulls and and a nice new finish, but your videos go way beyond what i did. Thank you for everything you do to restore these old pieces to better than new!

I refinished a little cupboard that had been similarly distressed - it was mahogany veneer over pressed wood.... it was for my daughter's narrow hallway, I picked it for the size more than anything else.... I painted it white and wallpapered the inside and put short hairpin legs on it. Now it houses the hand towels for her cloakroom and some of the dozen scented candles she has!!! Love the colour. Another triumph!!!! ❤❤❤

I. Love. This! What a unique color combination that just really looks like it was meant to be! However, I will tell you that in the early 1990s, I would have KILLED to have a crackled white set of drawers that looked like the original, LOL. Maybe not so damaged, but that "shabby chic" look of all the deep cracks in a white paint coat would have netted you the envy of all your friends who shopped at Pier 1 Imports, LOL.

Blue-green, yes!! Happy compromise. I used Farrow & Ball's blue-green for the lining boards in the kitchen and the Welsh dresser and a darker Crown Paints green-blue for the lower walls of the dining room..

Angie, I love how it turned out. The paint mixture is a lovely shade and does, indeed, look amazing with the darker wood stain. I think you hit the sweet spot for this tired old piece. A matching nightstand (or 2) would make a very nice set of bedroom furniture! For a cheap piece of furniture, it looks like a million bux!

Sending you lots of love for replacing the drawer guides with poplar and adding the nice drawer liners that carry over the wood flavors of the top surface. Cutting away the country quint curves was a brilliant idea to make the piece have a fresher look. Loved seeing you replace a chunk of pine on the drawer front edge. Because you are such a good teacher as well, I'm starting to take notes of the finishes you use together, with other details of why you choose one series of steps over another. Ooooooooooooooooow, the blue-green is marvelous. The half paint, half wood-grain finish works really well on this dresser. While the drawer pulls aren't beautiful, they complement the lines of the dresser. I would be really happy to have this piece in my home even if it isn't Chippendale. Nice choices, Angie.

I didn't think I was going to like the colour split of the piece but you were right, the drawers are so different that the split works. I am new to learning about furniture as a hobby but I clearly have to step up my game! The quality seems to depend primarily on the type of wood? You stated that this was not a high quality piece of furniture - I would not have come to that conclusion based on your workmanship. Using quality paints and thinking ahead to apply the beeswax, stain, drawer liners, and the top coat elevated its look. I would buy this for myself, without hesitation.

Angie, I think you and I are alike insofar as wanting to rescue not only cats, but furniture! I reupholster furniture, and when I see a piece in need I'm like, "I can fix that." Our old barn has pieces in there that I have good intentions for, but I am busy reupholstering for paying customers, lol! Beautiful. Those are the pieces I like. It probably would’ve ended up on the curb if you hadn’t bought it. The mixing of the paint colors came out so nice!
