I've owned 9 single action revolvers, all Rugers. 4 had transfer bars, 5 without. There is a very important difference, between the two, in favor of transfer bars. Let's say you're hunting with a holstered pistol. You draw your pistol, cock it & then for some reason decide not to fire. With the transfer bar, all you need to do, is lower the hammer, reholster & you are safe. With no transfer bar, while you are standing out in the field, you must lower the hammer to half cock, manually rotate the cylinder till you can observe the empty chamber in the proper position before safely lowering the hammer. If you have fired one or more shots, then you have to do the above, count the number of fired chambers & then lower the hammer. If you've miscounted, or erred in indexing the cartridges through the thin gap tween the cylinder & recoil shield, then you may be presented with another problem. The pistol may not be safe as you've assumed, or when you choose to take your next shot, the hammer may drop on a fired case. Given the choice, I would 100% of the time choose a pistol with the safer, more practical transfer bar.

Dustin, Great explanation between a transfer bar and no transfer bar, In one of Mr. Elmer Keith's books Sixguns or Hell, I Was There A Montana Cowboy, he said that the old cowboys when they had money would roll up a bill in one of the chambers that the firing pin would rest on for safety and storage. You and your family have a beautiful and blessed weekend.

Great video. I do cowboy action shooting and use the new deputy slicked up. Even with the transfer bar it doesn’t make a difference shooting wise. A little extra safety never hurt.

I am a none transfer bar kind of guy myself. But definitely understand why some choose it. Hey dustin what Ordinance report did you see colt say not to trust the safety notch? Keep up the great work and congrats on the new Studio

@GunsOfTheWest Thanks, dustin. I will ask him. He might be referring to the military trials. It talks about 1 of the guns that broke, but in their words, they stated it had a clear and obvious manufacturing defect. But it says nothing about any recommendations on loading 5. I will ask him. He might have found something i haven't. I am always looking for information prior to early 1900 on the 5 versus 6. I find it to be extremely interesting. Subject.. I have found lots of information for them carrying 6, but Nothing yet about carrying 5. I do personally think carrying 5 is a smart thing to do. Other than a military doc from the 1890s, stating all pistols to be on an empty chamber during parades and inspection. This was for all pistols, not just SAAs. If you look at all Colts Advertisements from 1873-1940, they state safe to carry 6. Plus, most original colt SAA i have seen show quite a bit of wear on the safety notch. Especially US gov owned. I am working on a theory about where the carrying 5 came from. but still working on getting more evidence. Plus, it could all change if i find information on carrying 5. Also, when my 1880 US gov SAA gets back from lending it out. I'm happy to send it to you dustin

A very good video. Too many people throw around phrases like "hammer block" or "transfer bar" or "safety hammer" with little concept of how these revolvers operate. The Taurus Deputy is the latest example of a transfer bar ignition being added onto the 1873 Colt lockwork. Prior examples include the EAA Bounty Hunter, the Uberti Horseman (I never saw one in the flesh), the Uberti-made Beretta Stampede, the Taurus Gaucho, and certain Piettas made for Traditions and Cabelas. Some of those designs were not terribly robust. Personally I think Ruger has the best engineered transfer-bar-equipped single action revolvers but even a Ruger may break a T-bar eventually. I read an interesting story from another cowboy action shooter. A member of the host club's board went bananas, reporting that the cowboy shooters were terribly unsafe, violating the basic rule that a shooter should keep finger off the trigger until sights were on target. Some of the cowboys were (gasp!) pulling the trigger on their revolvers at the loading and unloading tables! The cowboy match director had to educate the board members that a Colt style single action revolver cannot be loaded or unloaded without manipulating the hammer and the trigger.

The transfer bar as I understand, was the result of people attempting to carry 6 shots in a Ruger SSA revolver and kept dropping them causing the revolvers to go off. So Ruger took their 3 screw model, and redesigned it turning it into a two screw model that used a transfer bar. Now there are several variations on that story, but that’s the story I understood. I personally never carried one that had a transfer bar, and never had an issue carrying an SSA with 6 rounds in it.

3 or 4yrs ago Uberti & Pietta decided to challenge Ruger's niche of the market (without using the same design) by offering a transfer bar in the hammer so you could load & safely carry 6rds instead of 5 - modern internals in a 180yr old ironic gun design. Like you, I'm a purist, so I was real concerned at the time that all new models were gonna be manufactured that way, but fortunately they weren't. As it turned out, the change was not widely announced, so most gun shops, if they stocked them, were getting in cowboy guns they didn't realize were different. I stepped into a shop back then & the guy behind the counter had no idea what he was selling. Literally, last week I stepped into another shop and showed an employee that he had 6 out of 9 transfer bar SAs in the case which he didn't know about. I demonstrated how they worked and he was totally surprised.

@@GunsOfTheWest, my concern was the tuning aspect of the guns with this new feature. I have Bob James out in Phoenix tune mine for fast draw, so I thought the new safety would be a problem. I called Bob and he said stay away from 'em - it'd be something else to break.

Thanks so much. I've been shooting a revolver since before you were born and did not know this. I have 2 Rugers, neither of which have a transfer bar, but they also have no pin sticking out of the hammer. They both have a firing pin that the hammer rests on all the time. Fortunately they also have the quarter cock (I've seen some that don't). Now my old Army Remington copy does have that pin sticking out of the hammer, but I don't worry too much about it since it's never loaded unless I am busy shooting it.

Great explanation! I know it wasn't on the originals, still the ability to load six and be confident the hammer won't create negligent discharges on loaded chambers is an obvious improvement. Modern revolver manufacturers include a transfer bar. Because the ability to rest the hammer on a live round is a defect, not a feature.

I love history and historical accuracy but it's hard to argue (imo) against the inherent safety that a transfer bar system offers. Maybe if colt had thought of it in 1873 it would have been around since then?

-- What I'd recommend for your wall: any older firearm you own but don't want to use anymore due to safety reasons. Just figure out how to render it permanently safe and mount it in a glass case for display. (also keep a space for any YT viewer count certificate or trophy) -- for CAS / SASS rules, are there events where transfer bars *aren't* allowed in the weapons to be used? Because I can't see any reason for CAS/SASS to bar a weapon because it has a safety feature, so long as "cowboy load" is still being observed.
@abee.s.corpus2455

SASS rules have ALWAYS allowed "New Model" Ruger single action revolvers which have had transfer bars since Ruger introduced them in 1973. The very first "End of Trail" match was won by a shooter using a Blackhawk. The Blackhawks are still legal although some scoring categories require fixed sight revolvers. Ruger eventually introduced the fixed sight Vaquero and later the New Vaquero (scaled down to approximately the size of a Colt SAA) which is probably the most popular revolver in the sport. SASS rules require shooters to load a six shot revolver with five rounds, hammer down on the empty chamber, regardless of whether the revolver has a transfer bar, a retracting hammer or some other type of passive safety. SASS rules emphasize safety.

Great video, but, transfer bars do break and your handgun will no longer work. I know too that firing pins also break rendering it a paper weight. To date I have replaced 3 transfer bars and 1 firing pin, different handguns. Maybe because I am old and was taught to fix the quarter click so they did work reliably that I still carry a cylinder full in all my 6 guns.

On Ruger a transfer bar is fine a transfer bar on a colt or clone 👎👎 I’m a history buff if it didn’t exist then it shouldn’t be on it now (And yes I understand some places require that but my attitude remains the same)

It actually doesn’t work on these guns. The cylinder stops don’t line up for it and the cartridges are rimmed, so there’s no place for a firing pin to rest between them to hold the cylinder in place.

I like Uberti's system. It has the firing pin on the hammer, but its floating and only extends out when the trigger is pressed. Mimics the look of a fixed firing pin with *some* of the safety of the transfer bar. I say *some* because theres always that chance it gets fouled and stuck.

I dont like the transfer bar. Dirt and grit get in there and the pistol wont fire. I much more prefer the firing pin fixed on the hammer. The transfer bar is alright for a target gun, but if you want to carry one in the outdoors for any length of time, go with the pistol with out a transfer bar.

A valid opinion. My favorite handguns are single action revolvers. I have no interest in non-transfer bar, single action revolvers. If I’m ever in nasty enough conditions to consider needing a non-transfer bar, I’ll just use a flap holster.

I owned a old Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 mag (3 screw) years ago. And I carried it for years loaded with 6, without incident, but due to the design it was always a possibility. So if a gun manufacturers makes a 6 shooter with a transfer bar that functions as normal (can I fan it), I lean towards safety over authenticity. Wish Ruger had developed a transfer bar system for their single actions like Taurus did, rather than what they did.
