Transfer electronics & transponder to new key fob for a 2007 Toyota RAV4

How to transfer the internal electronics and transponder (sensor) of a 3 or 4 button 2007 Toyota RAV4 remote key fob to a new shell case.

Thanks Ben. I had gone and gotten the new key shell cut, transferred the main door lock electronic unit right there in the store and then discovered about the transponder. While at the key cutting shop we couldn't figure where the transponder was or if it was somehow physically connected to the metal part of the key. As it was on my way home I even stopped at the Toyota dealer and asked to speak to someone who knew about the guts of the key. Even though claiming they could help me they obviously didn't know the details, fed be some bs and then asked if I wanted them to cost up a new key. Came home, Googled, watched your video, 5 min with a knife and I've now saved around $500 Canadian (needed two keys). Again, thank you so much. It is these video's and the people like you that make them that make KZbin the useful site that it is.

I can confirm-this saved my a$$. My dealer wanted close to $300!! I bought a new fob with a blank key off Ebay for like $10. You need to use either a razorblade, flathead screwdriver or utility knife to pry the chip out of the channel it sits in. Pry the sides of the channel as far out as you can to get the chip out. When it comes out, it’s very small-it just looks like a piece of plastic. Then like the video shows, sand off any excess glue and place it in the new shell. One note-at first I went to get my key cut at a local hardware store and they didn’t cut it exactly right. It went in the ignition but not far enough, and wouldn’t turn. It needs to be perfect-I would recommend going to a locksmith as long as they don’t charge you a crazy price. I also sprayed a little WD-40 in the ignition. Finally, when I use the key, I’m going to hold it down towards where the key and fob connect when I turn it to use leverage and keep the pressure off of the fob so it doesn’t snap again

So my original key for my scion broke the plastic so I purchased a case from Amazon , I got my doors to work but the engine wouldn’t start ! So I went to the dealer they wanted 250 for a new key and programming it ! I said no, watched your video my mistake was the chip I cut it off my old key and I paid 7 dollars for the case and it works !! So you saved me over 200 dollars thank you!!!

Thanks Ben, Your video helped sort out my key problem. I had to learn about the transponder after the fact, which when I stop to think about it, there's more to the key than just the little round battery you buy in the supermarket. I WENT THROUGH HELL and now I know why my new key didn't work! The locksmith cut it and only charged me $1 ! and I did the ''programming' per other videos here and the doors opened but the car won't start. I had to call auto club and they said it wasn't the battery but I needed a new one ($100 later that day at Walmart) but the problem really was the key/fob. I had to tape the broken key shank back onto the fob end and pray every time I start the car. I finally learned there was a transponder but until today and your video I didn't know it could be taken out. This makes so much sense to me. I have a 2011 Corolla.

Toyota tried to charge me $350 for a new key after they broke mine that was kinda wearing out but still worked if you were careful with it. Anyway I bought a new shell, cut the key, and transferred over the electronics but it wouldn’t start the car so I was kinda worried. I looked on KZbin and found this video and you really helped me out with this. I had no idea there was another chip inside. It was kinda hidden. So I cut it out like you showed me and filed the edges down and stuck it on the new key and it worked. You really saved me.

I used a heat gun to get the transponder out, just lightly hover the heat gun over the transponder 6” inches away from all angles without melting the component or key shell. Good vid!

Look out to not break the transponder.. It will crack or break easily if your key is old. It will not work again after it's been cracked. Worth a shot though. Thanks for video.

Thanks ! Got it to work! $10 total fix. The hard part is the responders, without it car will not turn. Use something like a heat gun to slow pry the plastic casing open.

What I experimented on was I bought 2 $5 keys cut (both work to open doors but would not start car ...has no transponder) so after watching a few videos on this method of removing the transponder, it got me thinking. What if I take my new key without a transponder and stick it in the ignition and hold my original key ( with transponder built in it) close to or touching the outter edge of the ignition would the car start with that cheap key.....and what do you know it started and ran even when I pulled the original key away...I'm stoked :). So what I'm going to do is program 1 new transponder key and then cut key open to remove the transponder chip and glue the chip to the outter edge of the ignition. Now it will start with any $5 key with no transponder. Try it yourself first, see if you can hold your original key close to or touching the edge of the ignition then start your car with your basic HDWalmart key and if it starts you can do the same method of removing the chip and glue to outter edge an use your new $5 keys as many as you need. Hope this gave you another option!

For anyone struggling, heat it up with a hair dryer or heat gun or something until the plastic starts to melt and the chip comes out so much easier!

Thank you. This worked on my 2010 Toyota Corolla key fob. I had figured out the keypad part, but I didn't know about the transponder that actually allows the car to start! As you mentioned, you really have to destroy the old fob to get that thing unglued.

My wife has an 2006 rav4 sport but it’s a 4 banger. My fob key just has the part with battery and no transponder. Although there is a space for it. The switch out was really easy. Thanks for the demo!

Great video but at no time do you say what was wrong the the blade, the buttons, or the outer shell of the old key that prompted you to purchase a new blade, new buttons, and a new shell before transferring the electronics and chip. Were the teeth on the old blade worn to the point where the cylinder was binding or was there some other problem with the old key? When the locksmith cut the copy blade, did he/she use a different unworn master key as a reference, or did you supply the 4 or 5 digit code for the cutting machine to use in order to cut an accurate copy? Hey Lewis. What prompted me to transfer to new key fobs was that the buttons on old fobs were all worn out, and looked almost melted. They still worked, but looked really bad. You can see this a bit in the video when I hold up the old key. Not sure how it happened...they came with the car when I bought it used. The blades on the old keys seemed fine, and the locksmith just used the old key blade to make the copy. He was a bit unsure it would copy correctly, but gave it a try and it worked fine.

I am currently trying to replace a 3-button FOB/Chip key that I lost last week and my options are to pay over $200 for a new genuine one from the dealer or under $35 for an aftermarket product from China. There is an American internet company also doing what you did, since their electronics are also originally from Toyota but are recycled from keys that were lost and never found by their owners and ultimately forwarded to this company and sold for $40 with a new case and a new blade. When introducing a new chip key to a car that has never known it, the challenge is getting the car to register the chip RFID serial number into the ECU computer and that involves special software running on a laptop connected to the car via an OBD2/USB cable which also includes a circuit board. The software that you download and run on your laptop is inevitably a pirated copy and there are reports of viruses having been introduced into them. While the viruses can mess up the laptop, it is not clear if these same viruses can mess up your car's ECU. The above mentioned aftermarket cables are from different suppliers having different qualities and communication protocols and may not all work in every model year for a particular Toyota vehicle. A dealer and some locksmiths can register to the ECU the cut or uncut chip key that you obtain on your own for typical fee of $35 to $50, but only if you have at least one existing functioning chip key. If you lose all your chip keys, the process is more complicated and costly as only the dealer can access your ECU through a backdoor. Programming the buttons of the remote so that the car recognizes them is a DIY task and the internet is full of examples of the procedure for you to follow.

My RFID is soldered to the circuit new circuit is different than original. I tried placing the old RFID in several places inside the new key and didn't work. My old key wouldn't work either until I soldered it back exactly where it was originally. Any ideas??

At any local locksmith. Not Home Depot, Lowe’s or any of that. It has to be a locksmith. For me, i just told the guy to cut the key and i’ll do the rest.
