If you're no stranger to this channel you'll know my new found LOVE for semi-hydro. When I first got into semi-hydroponics for my houseplants I tried out leca - and HATED IT.
Now that I've had my fair share of successes with pon, I decided to break open that old bag of leca and try it again.
My Alocasia Micholitziana was the best plant to test out the leca again - since Alocasias are big fans of semi-hydro. At least that's what I've gathered from my Zebrina taking a turn for the better after its pon transplant.
I also found lots of baby corms in the old soil, so I'll go a little in depth on what I do to grow baby alocasias.
Stay tuned for updates to see how this Alocasia does
Stay Botanical! ✌️🤍🌿

Girl get yourself a solder tool! Super cheap and they melt through plastic to go containers like butter! Nice clean holes and no more poking holes/cracking the containers.

The sprouts will grow upright if placed upside down, they do that in nature. No one comes along to place them upside down. It’s natural for it to want to sprout.

Cutting the roots 1/4 isn’t too much. This way it develops water roots without rotting the soil roots like I did. I use moss a round the stump to encourage root growth. Alocasia love Lecha. It allows more space for root growth and aeration. Have you tried Fluval Substrate? The roots exploded out of the Corm in a few days. Moss is so difficult to remove from the roots. I put the Corms in Peroxide/Water mix which also stimulates the Corm to grow without the crust. The more roots the more leaves. Great video.

I mix rinsed size #3 perlite in with my Pon (50/50 mix) to help it stretch further, plus it's not as heavy. I like having the larger air pockets in the mix, too. That Dyna Gro Foliage Pro is for soil and hydro.... so that was a great choice! The packaging is new, since the company that owns Superthrive bought out Dyna Gro.

@@BotanicalBrunette Pon is A LOT more expensive than LECA, so for plants that I don't feel I need to be extra-extra methodical and careful with, I use a mix of pon, pumice, and LECA. The pon gives the reliable moisture wicking that I'm most familiar, plus it fills up all the nooks and crannies inside the container to lend stability to taller plants. The other ingredients make the mix lighter (weight-wise) and airier, and also save me a little bit of money.

I had 2 micholitzianas (if I spelled that right) and the African Mask. I lost all 3. I bought the black velvet, which did o.k. I had to move it indoors due to changing light and heat conditions. It seems happier now. I use leica with some of my indoor plants. [Now back to your video].😊

I have a zebrina reticulata that I transferred into pon and it seems happy, growing healthy roots and everything, the leaves are not dropping, BUT! …it keeps producing flowers, 5 so far! No new leaf yet, so annoying. I’ll be following your journey on this plant! 💚

Hmm, it might have to do with the NPK ratio of the fertilizer. Perhaps the one you are using is stimulating flowering more than leaf growth

My alocasia's thrive in a glass indoor greenhouse on pon with 100% humidity inside. The roots and leaves go crazy, and I can still enjoy them even the glass is mostly condensed. When the stem gets too long, I just plant it further down in the pon, andit will get a lot of quorns.

Thank you so much for the video! I recently got into semi hydroponics and sometimes struggle to find the information I need. This was extremely helpful. If you don't mind, I wanted to ask quickly about the roots.. Many of my plants have taken to leca (all I've used so far) very well. Others, however, like my monstera (also with the long stem..) have had issues with root rot. When I transferred the monstera from soil it had a very large root system, like your alocasia did. I'm guessing that chopping those off or at least cutting them back helps prevent root rot? I have my first alocasia arriving Friday, and I plan to put it in leca, so thank you again for showing me how!

Hopefully your micholitziana likes the leca. I have one in soil that only hangs onto two leaves and was thinking of putting it in semi hydro too. It has a long stem like yours did so I think I’ll cut it like you did. My two other alocasia are in pon. I have about ten plants in leca that seem to love it. There’s a lot less watering with it, but for some reason I hate flushing it (even though it’s not hard at all), so I limit the number of plants I keep in leca.
