As a Blackburn fan I remember the talk of a certain Zidane was rumoured to sign, but you have to remember he was at Bordeaux, and around a 22 - 23 year old - certainly an unknown name at the time. Rumoured years later that the then owner, the late, great Jack Walker had come out with the quote, "why would we sign Zidane, when we have Tim Sherwood" once people knew who Zidane was 😂

Exactly this. Along with Dugarry, Bordeaux were looking to cash in on their stars. Sadly Sir Jack Walker gambled on sticking with the squad that had won the league, feeling they had more to offer. Along with King Kenny moving upstairs into the Director spot, it lead to the loss of momentum. Still, not bad for a small town 👏👏👏

The Newcastle bid for Rooney was when he was still at Everton. The bid was rumoured to be made by Freddie Shepherd to force Man Utd's hand to move for Rooney (and match wages etc) (Shepherd's son was part-owner of Rooney's agency I believe)

Alan's memory is a bit faulty, Newcastle did bid for Rooney at Everton before Man Utd came in for him, it was in the last days of Bobby Robson's tenure there. I always remember Craig Bellamy speaking about himself in the first person (edit - third person - duh! Thanks @AaAa-je5eo) when asked about what it would mean for him if Newcastle signed Rooney ("Craig Bellamy will have to do what's best for Craig Bellamy", or whatever he came up with :D). Despite this, this is still my favourite Football podcast, it's not at all juvenile and sensationalist, unlike some of the other high profile ones.

I feel like Shearer got that whole Rooney story totally wrong. We sold Woodgate to Madrid and everyone was outraged because he was such a good defender. The money was arguably too good to turn down for someone who was injured more than they were fit and fans could have lived with that if we’d done some actually planning and had a replacement lined up. Shepherd told the fans something exciting was coming and to wait and see. We then bid for Rooney (presumably planning on converting him into a centre back…). Man U promptly outbid us and off he went. We replaced Woodgate with Ronny Johnsen on a free transfer who went on to have an illustrious career with Newcastle, playing an incredible three times. We then spent most of the Woodgate money on panic buying defenders in January, including most of it going on Boumsong in a deal that was investigated as part of an enquiry into dodgy deals in football. There was no point during Rooney’s time at Man U that a bid could have realistically been made for him by Newcastle. Butchered that one, Al.

Yeah he was. I worked there at the time we defo bid. If i remeber right we played norwich at home on a monday night and drew 2-2 and i think that was the day man u came in for rooney. Not a good day. Bobby was gone within week or two.

I was on a flight to Faro Portugal with Terry McDermott sat in front of me it was after Keegan had gone with king Kenny the then Newcastle manager , he must have nipped over to Villamoura for a few days as the season hadn't finished , you certainly knew who's luggage and golf bag it was as all of it had the Newcastle badge on it. The first question about Rooney was specifically about the bid Newcastle put in to Everton before United signed him. It seemed at the time like Newcastle were doing United a favour as it played out like they were finding out his availability and what his fee would be. Rooney had been linked to United but Everton had categorically denied that they would sell him to United (this is all according to the newspaper and SSN reports). Newcastle then bid (iirc) £23m, rising to £30m, which was accepted. United then matched the bid, which they had to accept because Rooney had been told they were letting him go & he didn’t want to go to Newcastle, and then the Newcastle bid just quietly disappeared and was never mentioned again. Of course, this is just how it appeared to play out in the media, so it could be nonsense. It’s like saying United only signed Rooney because of that little kid holding up a sign at Old Trafford saying “sign Rooney please Mr Ferguson” or something like that. That was what that question was about, not in 2009/2010 when Rooney put in a transfer request because he wanted assurances that the “rebuild” after United let Ronaldo go and didn’t cave-in to the sudden £50m price increase of Tevez, plus a few others, was going to be a quick one and not a complete four or five year overhaul as he didn’t want to waste his prime years at a club that knew it wasn’t going to challenge. United then won the league a few more times before Ferguson finally left.

The interesting one with Newcastle was Ronaldinho before he went to Barca, there was talk of a swap deal plus cash with Laurent Robert Robert didn't want to go and these were remarks on the transfer "At Newcastle, Ronaldinho could play in the same side as me," said Robert, who has enjoyed a troubled relationship with both his manager and his teammates while on Tyneside "He's the best player in the world and my friend. Why not him on the right, me on the left, and Alan Shearer up front." . On the topic of Zidane Newcastle turned down the chance to sign him in 96 from Bordeaux for just £1.2m, apparently it was an easy deal to do, when they sent someone to watch him the report back was that he "has got no chance of making it, at best he could play for Wolves - who were bottom of the First Division."

I think Alan is wrong about Newcastle trying to sign Rooney from Man U. Rooney was at Everton at the time and had fallen out with David Moyes and was determined to move. Newcastle met the valuation and Rooney was happy with the terms Newcastle offered him supposedly and would have taken the move to get away from Moyes but when Man U bid the same amount he decided to go there instead because Newcastle were mid table and Man U obviously far better placed to win trophies
