In the old days we used to use toothpaste for polishing gliders, that is aeroplanes. As you can imagine, surface of gliders has to be as smooth as possible to reduce drag and increase performance. At that time polishing compounds were not so readily available, so we used toothpaste, which you could get anywhere and it was considerably cheaper, too. We polished them before competitions. Gliders have extremely smooth surface and are very sensitive to any dirt, even rain drops and the insects that want to end their short lives on the wings, so nowadays gliders are often equipped with bug wipers, so you can clean wings in flight. After each flying day, glider is thoroughly washed and wings covered after. Glider pilots can be very anal about that and rightfully so. Every minor inperfection can cause unnecessary drag.
@CreativePassion88 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing that interesting insight, @fifi23o5! In the past, using toothpaste to polish gliders due to its availability and cost savings was a smart and economical solution. Maintaining a glider's smooth surface is important for aerodynamic performance and it is interesting that pilots use toothpaste for this purpose. If you have any more stories or experiences you'd like to share, please let me know. It's great to learn from different perspectives and backgrounds! ✈️🌟 😊

Well, I hope the flappy wheel is at least turning away from the edge. Otherwise, one slip and you will be sending that Chinese cleaver right into your chest. By Btw, the cleaver already had a proper edge, all you needed to do was touch it up in a fine stone. Floppy buffers and belts put a rounded edge on-sharp for a while but dull quickly. Learn to use a stone and steel. These tools are meant to sharpen properly.
@CreativePassion88 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing your insights on the sharpening process. It's true that using a fine stone to touch up the edge can often provide a sharper and more durable result compared to certain power tools. Your emphasis on proper technique, especially when using tools like a flappy wheel, is crucial for safety. Sharpening with stones and using a steel for maintenance are traditional methods that, when done correctly, can yield excellent results. Your advice on avoiding rounded edges from floppy buffers and belts is also noteworthy, as it speaks to the importance of maintaining a precise and effective cutting edge. 😮
@CreativePassion88 Жыл бұрын

@@CreativePassion88 i think the way of sharpening you showed is dangerous and ruining geometry of the blade. Possibly it is razor sharp but despite that using grinder against butcher hatchet could lead to serious injury. Do not show it to other inexperienced people!
