Hello Dear Lady, I LOVE hydrangeas!!!! I have a couple large plants that I took from root cuttings They are about 4 to 5 feet wide and nearly 4 feet tall. We cut them to about 1 foot in the fall and they come back every spring with a vengeance. They are Huge mop heads they start green then Lighten to Big white heads as summer advances they go to sort of Lime green. I like them best as White I have given starts of these Ladies across the last 5 years. I admire the paniculata types You give me courage to try to grow some of those Rick

I’d like to try it. Great video. I have a question about Invinciball Blush hydrangeas . I just planted a few - in amended soil, part sun area, I added some Hollytone to it - and one died already. They get water in the morning from my sprinkler…but not a blast (more of a low mist). One more is not doing well. Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks.
@gardeningatthesimongettinorth6 ай бұрын
Hi Linda! Thank you for watching. Maybe too much hollytone? It probably didn’t need it if you amended the soil. I have some he invinciball blush & lime. I didn’t add any fertilizer and I haven’t given any yet. I’ve had the 2 years I think. Try less or no hollytone. I hope it works for you.
@LindaLeyble6 ай бұрын
@@gardeningatthesimongettinorth thanks! That’s what I get for listening to Martha Stewart - she was emphasizing the fertilizer. I thought it might have been a water issue - but it happened in just a week! You may be right! You seem to know your hydrangeas. I swore I’d never buy one again that bloomed on old wood “cause for me they bloom and bloom for several years - then all leaves for a few years - then blooms. So unpredictable! I wrote to Proven Winners also - maybe I can get a refund or another plant to try. Thanks for your great channel.
@gardeningatthesimongettinorth6 ай бұрын
Hi Linda, hopefully Proven Winners will work with you. I probably wouldn't mention the hollytone. The incrediball & Invincibelle (smooth) hydrangea's bloom on new wood. It's the macrophylia types that bloom on old wood. Paniculata's bloom on old and new wood. Good luck with your hydrangeas. They are one of my favorites!

Hi, thanks for info, how long did they stay in the covered box before they rooted? and do the bloomstruck and twistandshouts get morning sun ?
@gardeningatthesimongettinorth Жыл бұрын
Hi I think they started rooting after a couple weeks. I think I left them in the box for a month. I still have them in pots and need to get them planted in the ground soon. All bushes should get planted 6 weeks before the ground freezes. If you’re in a southern climate there isn’t a rush to get them planted since the ground doesn’t freeze. Thank you for watching 😊🌸🌺

Hi. If you drill 2 or 3 3/4 inch holes in the lid it will allow sufficient ventilation to prevent mould and rotting and yet still keep the humidity high enough to keep the cuttings hydrated.

My holes aren’t that big. Maybe the size of a pencil and yes but keep an eye on them and only shade no sunlight

We are in Maine. If we were to take cuttings now, allowing them to start rooting, kept in the house, they would start growing in dead of winter. Seems they would be growing inside until next April/May and have never had an opportunity to go through a dormant period. Will they be acclimated enough to put them out and survive next winter? (2024/25) TY
@gardeningatthesimongettinorth Жыл бұрын
Hi, To be honest I haven’t tried growing cuttings this late in the season and grow them indoors. Maybe if you let them go dormant somewhere they won’t freeze? Then bring them out of dormancy indoors and grow them until you can plant them outside. Good luck if you decide to try it 😊🌺

Do you want the stems this short? It makes me nervous to cut them this short.
@gardeningatthesimongettinorth7 ай бұрын
It depends on the variety? If it’s a paniculata it flowers on old & new wood. Macrophylias only bloom on old wood. They set their blooms for the following year in August. You have to be careful to not cut next years blooms. I was only showing for pruning purposes not for a vase. If you want cut flowers cut them to fit your vase.
