Hi Ma'am, Need your help in below two. * Can "if" and "unless" be interchangeable? * And "As" and "Since" interchangeable? * And also "Yet" and "but" interchangeable in some context
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher4 жыл бұрын
unless means if.... not. If it is not strong it will break. Unless it is strong it will break. Now if you say, 'if you go they will worry'... unless you go they will worry. - the meanings are opposite. So you can only change 'if .... not' with 'unless' not 'if'. we are going by taxi as our car is not working. we are going by taxi as our car is not working. in this case you can exchange. but..... She was disguised as an alien. she was disguised since an alien? No. as long as she comes it is ok. Can you change this to since? No, She has been playing the piano since childhood. She has been playing the piano as childhood. No.

Hello ma'am, I had a question to ask, while teaching grammar is there a pattern that we must follow? As like one chapter is dependent on another if so why is that pattern not followed in school? Like I've been teaching few students and in there school the teacher is following the syllabus and she has started the transformation of sentences and no discussion is done on clauses, phrases or on infinitive or participles as you said in your video its important to understand them before beginning with it so why is that?
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher Жыл бұрын
The proof of the pudding is in the eating. No one knows grammar including the teachers. Most cannot pick out a compound verb. Most will pick a non finite as a verb. The sentences are almost stupidly simple. You complicate it and they will all fail. Use my books Language with Ease where I follow a lateral system of teaching through whole sentences not a linear concept based one. Schools continue to fail and are in denial of it because the government inflates marks at the boards and gives everyone a feel good shelter.

Hello Miss. I have a query. Given that compound sentences can have more that two independent clause, why was 'therefore resulted' taken off. Could if have not been this--- Despite feeling exhausted, the man continues to work long hours, and did not take his health seriously; therefore, this resulted in his untimely heart attack. I am a little confused. How do we count clauses. Compound clauses can have a combination of 2 or more independent clauses, correct? Could you pls. advice. Again, God bless you! @The mindsprings English Teacher

Number of verbs = number of clauses. Check out my video on FANBOYS. Ideally only use these as conjunctions for compound sentences, or the coordinate pairs like neither nor etc. Safest way.
@Reemjheem2 жыл бұрын
Ma'am the adjectival Clause begins with 'Which', can't it be called as a relative clause?
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher2 жыл бұрын
Relative and adjectival clause are the same. After identifying the marker 'which' always question to noun to see if it works. For e.g. I wonder which is the better tool. Here I what? you will not get any answer. But the verb wonder what? will give you which is the better tool. Hence it is a noun clause. So always quesiton.

Please clear the following doubt s for me mam.. Does "not only but also' make a complex sentence? Does 'as well as' act as a conjunction.. If so, what type of conjunction it is
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher3 жыл бұрын
Not only.... but also is a correlating conjunction because it comes in a pair. But it can join words, phrases, or clauses. When they join clauses they make compound sentences. They never make complex sentences because this conjunction shows equal additional action or state. The same goes for 'as well as' It shows equal addition. It will be a coordinating conjunction. It can join words, phrases or clauses.

Hello maam I understood the concept but I have a doubt if this sentence was a simple one and we had to convert it in the compound complex then we could not add the word regular because we dont know that the devotees are regular or irregular or any thing like so then what word would we add to make it compound complex. plz plz plz plz answer me
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher4 жыл бұрын
The verb is the most important part of transformations. You need to cut it to one in a simple sentence, you need the FANBOY conjunctions to hold two sentences in compound and the subordinating conjuctions for complex. The rest of the words are extras as long as you do not change the meaning. You can even drop them.
@snehaldas58934 жыл бұрын
ma'am in the question you did in the video , we have only one coordinate(principal) clause right ? the rest two are subordinate clauses that makes the sentence a complex sentence , isn't it ? for it to be a compound complex , don't we need two principal clauses and one or more subordinate clauses ? ? Confusion on my part again :((
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher4 жыл бұрын
Two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction = compound sentence. One main and one or two subordinate = complex sentence. One compound sentence + one subordinate clause = compound complex sentence.

Ma'am, semi-colon is used to replace any conjunction!!! Dash is used for a change of thought during writing!! 🙏
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher3 жыл бұрын
No semi-colon is not in place of any conjunction. It is used instead of a comma when the list of items you are describing are not of the same kind. Ram went to the market; stopped at the tailors; picked up the laundry before coming home. Dash does not change the thought. It extends the same thought with an example or with extra information.

Sorry, I was not very happy with this video... Initially working with sentences would help, I think. I would see that you were seemed a bit caught up with concepts bz u chose a para, I felt u were speaking aloud to yourself. It may seem simple for u to throw out verbs, choose which ones to keep... But for students, it would hit them like a brick.. Sorry... Displeased with this presentation... U straight away chose to work with a huge huge compound complex para... This is layering!!!!!!
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher Жыл бұрын
lol.... My books are doing brilliantly well in schools that are using them from grade 1 onwards. By the time students come to this stage, they can pick out verbs in their sleep. Maybe you cannot. You need to do the exercises in all the earlier books like they did, and that is called layering. Briefly revisiting concepts daily until the frequency makes learning crystal clear and premanent. The book has 100 "paras" that the kids do comfortably, so don't console yourself about me choosing one that suits me. You are really funny. Nothing hits my students like a brick. Senior class teachers dread them coming up because they know so much. I didn't "straightaway" choose to work with this long sentence. It has a precedence. Your displeasure has no impact on the larger scheme of teaching and learning in schools. Sorry to disappoint. As I said, find another teacher. Good luck.
