Gon was so hopeful for kite being alive that he eventually genjutsu’d himself into thinking Kite could still be saved but Pitou broke that illusion and Gon couldn’t handle it. It really hits you when the other characters that are accepting of Kite’s death look at Gon with such concern when Gon says things about Kite still being alive. Before you find out about Kite’s eventual monster reborn mechanic lol.

@@brandito5480 That was his ssj2 transformation, his ssj1 transformation was vegeta taunting him and encouraging him to transform. I can agree that his ssj2 transformation was partially earned but there was next to no training for it like everyone else who became ssj2 did and also one part I forgot to mention was that each transformation up until ssj2 was tied to some sort of big emotional character moment, sure from Cabbas perspective shit was going down and I'm sure he was plenty emotional but it all felt empty compared to for instance Vegeta turning ssj1.

The "reverse transformation" trope is actually probably more common then the real transformation one. Half of the shonen if not more, have the protagonist have some "Dark" or "Evil" transformation that makes them powerfull at the cost of going berserk in some way. It's a kind of transformation that easier to perform since you need less logic to perform it (He has a demon inside him or what ever). While an actual transformation, you need usually training or a character arc/backstory to show why the protagonist did not do it before. Either why he couldn't do it before... Or why now is the right moment. Since having a "Demon transformation" is much much easier to do. You see it alot in shonen anime. Either that, or they are OP from the start. Which i feel is the new kind of transformation nowdays. You just dont know what range of habilities the protag has, so at anypoint more bullshit can come out of no-where with reason. Since he was "holding back" the entier time before.

togashi loves subversion, I mean technically it gon isn't even his first reverse super saiyan moment, in yu yu hakusho when Yusuke loses control to Raizen he pretty much has a less dark parallel, Yusuke only awakens his demon blood due to dying and while him being reborn is still a mostly happy moment the loss of control to raizen shakes yusuke up mentally and really makes him realize how much stronger he can still become. Gon's transformation is still my favourite but it's clear to see how long togashi has been thinking about some of these concepts.

Surprised you didn't mention the Berserker Armor, Guts loses something tangible every time he uses it. It's sick as hell at first, and then towards the end of the manga you're like "no don't use it on the giant squid he's not worth it!" Also I think this video convinced me to watch Hunter x Hunter, I've always had this notion that it's just Yu Yu Hakusho but less dark, but I guess it's still got some of that classic anime edge to it

Loved this video. I think you tackled this topic with an endearing amount of passion and nuance. I think an additional aspect to some transformations that actively enhances their impact is whether or not they have a risk factor. Examples - Final Getsuga Tensho, Vasto Lorde Ichigo, Kaioken, Majin Possession, Gear 2, the Kyuubi Cloak, Gon's transformation, the Eight Chakra Gates, the list goes on. It says so much more about the character as well as the stakes in a conflict when the character is willing to take a huge risk and make a trade for more power for whatever means. Whether it's risking the safety of others or risking their own body or their own soul or their futures, I feel a transformation is often more impactful that way, or maybe it's just a different type of impact that's more satisfying and relatable to me personally. Like if you put the Majin Vegeta and Mystic Gohan side by side, I'll pick Majin Vegeta every time in the sense of I feel it provided more impactful character development than the other, even though I'm super invested in Gohan's development/redemption and the Mystic form makes him canonically the strongest standalone character at that time. So despite me having all these reasons to be more invested in Gohan, I find myself feeling the most depth in Vegeta's transformation there. And on the other hand, I will pick Goku's Kaioken form over Vegeta's Great Ape form every time as well for the same reasons. Even though I'm thoroughly compelled by the horror Vegeta presented as a villain at that time (and Great Ape looks cool), I was much more invested in Goku's ability to go against the odds, dig deep and put his body through hell to keep everyone safe.

phenomenal video. mainly due to watching shonen the majority of my time watching anime (around a decade at this point) id say my absolute favorite are the bleach transformations. while Kubo may have a lack of story structure in essence of his writing, his ability to communicate interpersonal struggle and growth through a creative and artistic rendition in a character’s physical appearance and weapon used is just unmatched. The care put into the design is meticulous, and the weight/curiosity behind a character’s transformation is what drove many fans to continue the series after its narrative plateauing

Gon's transformation was the perfect Anti-SSJ power-up not only because, like you said, it represents tragedy instead of triumph, but also because for both transformations the character transforming had to access their deepest hidden reserves of strength through the emotions of rage and despair to ascend to a new level of power to defeat their adversary... except that while Goku's hidden strength just kinda appeared, Gon's hidden strength was his literal life-force and all the power and potential he would ever have ripped out of him and burned through as fuel in a truly final rampage. Goku refused to give up in the face of tragedy and insurmountable odds, Gon threw away everything in the same situation.

Idk if it counts since it's more of a seinen, but the stand arrows in Jojo are a really cool concept. The arrow will do one of two things depending on how it interacts with the user. If the arrow stabs the user, they gain a new ability for their stand but if it stabs the stand itself, it changes the stand to something entirely different. I always thought this was cool since it gave the characters a new option or even challenge in every encounter. The only problem is it's typically only been used in the finales so we don't ever really see the concept used to the fullest.

The Gon transformation had such good as he stated like reasoning behind it, instead of just seeing a friend die and getting mad and then beating the shit out of them instantly, Gon's friend dies and he goes through grief before beating the shit out of them, but there was just something about Gon's transformation that didn't sit with me well and ruined it for me, not that it was dark I'm fine with that but it was probably that I heard of the transformation and it got me into HxH and I over hyped it in my head after finishing Dragonball.

What i realised when watching this video is that when we first see adult gon in the anime he is black and white and what had been built up during the story was that gon only sees in black and white good and evil so when we first look at adult gon we are looking at him like he looks at everything else in black and white
