GET OUT OF THE WAY HOTROD!!! Awesome review man. Each and every complaint you have with the figure is totally valid. However for me I love his look and this is the HOTROD I've been waiting for. I got him on pre-order and can't wait to get him in hand. I also love his obscure accessories. The pole from when he fished with Daniel and the buzz saw when he was cutting Cup and himself free when they crashed under water. Although I totally agree that he absolutely didn't need a matrix chamber. Thanks again and as always keep up the great work.

I totally agree on the lack of abdomen - that's a really great way of putting it. I think the only thing this guy has on the older MP aesthetically is a more accurate altmode and maybe some better looking lower legs.

I have the exact same problem with this figure that you do. I think you said it best that it looks like a person in cosplay dressed up like Hotrod as opposed to it actually being Hotrod.

The vehicle mode is rumored to resemble his G1 car mode & the robot mode will take after his IDW More Than Meets The Eye design. And Wheelie's also getting a new figure, too! He looks very G1 accurate, but there's 1 downside. No slingshot.

Fantastic review, can't wait to pick it up- but I do have a question for ya: I'm not a fan of chrome, because it tends to chip and look ugly after a while, so I try to avoid it alot- but I was curious, with the chrome parts, if maybe there were any itty bitty signs, possibly where they snipped the plastic off the sheet at the factory, of what color the plastic is underneath? Because if it's just basic grey, then I'll just dismantle those parts, strip the chrome off, and put them back on. That's what I'd like to do.

Great review, i agree on the abs of this figure. I have the same issue with Ironhide. It just makes them look lanky/oddly proportioned. I think Hot Rod would look better if more of the front lights folded in instead of just the sides.

I agree on the aesthetics part not being optimal for iIonhide and Hotrod, . But of the other reviews i have seen of Ironhide, almost all of them loved the look of him. Maybe its just us : ). I wish you'd have taken a bit more time to compare him to the old MP and Carrie, otherwise cool review as usual.

I like it, it scales better with MP10 and of course with the seeker mold. The issues bother me but not as much, I can always use translucent clear light blue to haze the transparent canopy.

If I'm correct, you said that someone sent that figure to you for review. I think I saw someone review that exact figure, and stated in the review that the figure was a factory reject. Figure had the same issues with the chest plate hindering the figure in alt. mode, and the arm joint issue.

Takara Tomy sent me gift certificates, which was annoying so the next one I bought on Amazon and utilized the Prime return policy because it had a deep scratch in the orange paint and windshield. Fool me twice... Just get a good retailer who will go to battle for you and go through them.

It seems to me that the designer of this toy has the same issue as with MP Ironhide in that he or she became fixated on a cool idea of how to compress the main part of the body in on itself, and worked in the other transformation steps afterwards instead of taking a step back and trying another approach. I agree that the matrix chamber is a unnecessary addition, it takes space where Hotrods head could have been positioned in car mode and allowed space for more robust legs that actually would have brought his proportions in line with the rest of his body.

I like this figure i can see why you would complain about him looking like a solid snake carton box cosplay but to me it looks fine enough and hopefully that Shockwave review will come sooner than later because my favorite Decepticon/Transformer is still shockwave and soundwave is next. but at the end of the day this figure is a buy for me.

In pictures, the whole "blocky chest" design bugged me, like in Ironhide, as it did for you. But now that it's out, unlike Ironhide (where I thought flipping up the bumper would help), I think Hot Rod just needs *slightly* thicker legs, especially the thighs. More Beyonce, less Taylor Swift, ya know? I know you know. Taking a tad more off the headlight area with those tabs that fold inward would've helped some too. Just round it off slightly. But I love me some Hot Rod/Rodimus, so it's staying in my Stash.

That was a pleasant surprise! Why oh why did they add that matrix chamber, totally unnecessary and it compromises the figure. TT really need to take a step back, as that bugs me but the backpack doesn't look as bad here. He's pre ordered so I'm all in but it's frustrating. High hopes for shockwave too, but quakeblast is in transit so he's got competition when he arrives. Awesome as always Bobby, well done sir.

I agree with the chest issue, but I also think the car looks bad, maybe the two things are related. The translucent windows are REALLY annoying here. Also, I've come to realize that Takara just doesn't have good standards (QC, etc.), even though I've been lead to think the opposite in the past.

Having got mine today, I noticed you didnt peg the shoulders into the canopy section on his back - there's a little peg on the double hinged shoulder piece that pegs into the canopy (the hole is blended in so well with the clear plastic you can barely see it), and this keeps the shoulders stable. Not sure if you did this, but you didnt seem to show it. That aside, he's not a bad figure, and while the chest is a bit boxy (Fanstoys one looks better in that regard judging from the prototype shots out there), he stil looks good. The hip skirt is probably my biggest bugbear, due to it being one piece - probably should have had it split into 3 parts. Also, not sure if this is just mine, but the "ab crunch", for lack of a better term, seems a bit on the loose side, or at least is looser than I'd like. Might have to dab a little clear nail varnish in there. Probably replace it with Hoodlum, whenever that comes out though lol

Even if every MP has got his flaws, in the past (from MP10 on) they were minor, very specific flaws. Very often, they were not even design flaws. Now, with Ironhide, Tracks and this, is the general proportion that is somehow flawed. And this is something we can't fix, sadly...

I was so excited about this figure at first but after watching a few reviews on it, I'm getting disappointed with it. There's just something off about it. When you placed it next to Tiger Trax it just seemed so cheap and small. I'll wait for the Fanstoys version next year instead. Ever since MP Tracks came out I'm becoming less enthused with Takara. $80 figures with average quality and looks aren't really my thing. Great review as always. 👍👍

Im sorry but the upper and lower halves IMO just dont look like its for the same robot. The lower half to me is a major eyesore especially the theighs,almost looks too slim and not well proportion. The upper part looks too boxy,almost like he's wearing a t-shirt lol. I like the transformation but just the overall look doesnt scream Hotrod to me. Scratching my head wondering whats goin on with Takara as of late.

Thanks for the review sir. I like about 90% of this guy and the bit i don't like is the same as you, that flat chest now bugs me. I have him on pre order so think I will still get him to see if it improves in hand but do think it will do a good enough job the a shelf. Masterpiece has dropped a little in the last few figures, Tracks was poor, Iron hide I like but this one I think will go in the ok pile.

And it annoys me so much they gave him separate hip skirts (including individual buttflaps) except the one-piece apron on the front! It looks terrible. Sooo close.

I think both MP versions of this character are lacking in many areas , size been a major 1 with this guy its just to small in bot mode next to a mp scale prime . Takara are yet to make 1 that makes me feel satisfied having it in my collection. This is 1 figure 3 p companies have out done takara

I hate the torso and general proportions, especially the skinny thighs. I also dislike how plain the calves come off. They could have used a more metallic plastic or actually painted the calves so that it had more luster (picking out highlights and shodows). Again, even though it's only renders at this point, I'm all about FansToys and their take: Hoodlum. I can't wait for it. Champing at the bit. More on the proportions: even from the promo shots, they reminded me of bad 1990s Mark Texeira art. With MP Ironhide's Liefeld-esque proportions, it's like the last two MPs are taking their anatomy cues from everything that was bad about early 1990s Marvel Comics. What's next? Are they going to come out with an MP Galvatron that resembles the dregs of Andy Kubert, circa 1993? Or a Wheelie that looks like Todd McFarlane's work, turdy fingers and all? Ew. Grody. Maybe I'm a stick in the mud or a jerk or something; or maybe it's that I've been steady doing professional illustration for 20+ years, but the only real exaggeration in proportions that I want to see in my TFs are those approaching heroic mecha styles (something that both Ocular Max Sphinx and Cloud 9's Quakeblast knock out of the park -- I just got QUakeblast in the mail, and I love the hell out of it, and Sphinx is in the pipeline). Outside of that, I wish that the standard was to shoot for something resembling regular human proportions, more or less. Anything else just seems to feel really off balance and clumsy, as far as I'm concerned. These last two MPs, combined with the plethora of the knuckle-dragging Munky 'Bots from Combiner Wars, makes me think that Has-Tak are losing their collective minds . . . or they're just being lazy. Looks like FansToys is faking the chest on theirs to make the chest look better and have abs. And it looks like their car mode suffers a lot for trying to make a better bot mode. Takara's trying to do everything correct and you can only do so much when you're trying to do a correct car mode, correct to form transformation and then try to get a correct bot mode from that.

I think his chest/body look odd, but it doesn't bother me a terrible amount. I think its well more acceptable than the Ironhide mess at least. I'm glad its a good toy, I look forward to getting mine. Oh I looked it up and I realized I was wrong! The designer of Hot Rod is a new guy who also designed Classics (Generations) Jazz and Rattrap a couple of years ago. I did love Jazz and Rattrap a lot, but when it comes to masterpiece, I think this guy still needs more experience. Well, the main designer of Ironhide on the other hand, is just Hironori Kobayashi, who designed most of the Masterpiece figures.

It bugged me less with Ironhide than it did with Hotrod. I don't own Hotrod. But I do have both Ironhide and Ratchet. Somehow the chest was so bad in my view it got on my nerves. And with the other 2 it just is something I can look past. I am a fan of the excessive amount of accessories with the figures. I think it is a choice that also got to do with budget, look at Sunstreaker he costs near double that of Hotrod. And he has a far better chest design. Also a lot more transforming parts in general.
