For the first decade of the Tranformers franchise, Marvel Comics were king... but after "Generation 2" ended in 1994, "Transformers" comics went away. Then, in the early 2002, a new company took the reigns, producing wildly successful new series... that, in just a few short years, inexperienced, egotistical business owners drove straight into the friggin' ground. Patreon supporter Luke Wood sponsors this look at the history of DREAMWAVE!

It was so cool to see Transformers in comic books again. These opened my son's eyes, at the time he was only 5 to 8 years old but he jumped into Japanese manga and it stayed with him until college. The More Than Meets The Eye profile books were the best thing Dreamwave ever did. I have those along with the Armada and Beast Wars versions. I do wish we could have gotten the extra profiles book(which would have included the Female Autobots). Hopefully, whoever gets the Transformers comic license after IDW will go back and give us that extra G1 profiles book. Dreamwave walked so that IDW could run. The War Within was easily the best thing that came out of the Dreamwave era (though I did enjoy the Armada/Energon comic as well). It's still a good read. The art from DW that Pat Lee didn't do holds up well (aside from the "mitten hands" syndrome everyone seems to have). It's obvious he put a lot of effort into that Wizard promo illustration, but doing sequential art on a monthly basis was obviously not his strong suite. I remember being so excited for these comics based on the previews in Wizard, and even enjoying them immensely at the time (thankfully I still have all the ones I bought back then).

Could they have though? They were kinda blowing their wad so early one. By year 2 they’d already introduced the entire 84-86 cast, introduced unicron and we’re planning on him being the big bad in 2005. They were just going down the line by year of the toys being released in the 80s. It seemed pretty apparent they had no long term plans at all for the books. Whether is was 3 years or 5 it was pretty obvious they were never planning ahead

@@theEmirateXaaron Unless you were there working with them you can’t say for certain they had no plans for the future. With multiple stories being run in the different series releases, such as their G1, armada, and Energon comics that were never finished because of greedy executives there’s no way to know what the writers had planned beyond what was written and produced. Look at IDW’s transformers comics. They have multiple titles, many of which form a unified comic universe, and they put new ideas into their comics with titles like All Hail Megatron. If Dreamwave didn’t meet it’s end they could have gone down a similar path of exploring new ideas.

I actually got almost all the comics (missing only one) of the Armada and G1. They was sold as a 2 stories in one comic. Started the first half of the comic with Armada and then G1, then continued from G1 ending with the cybetron story while the Armada was still going. However because of poor sales here in Norway the comic ended with the Minicons going into the mysterious pod and Grimlock going of for him self for some reason. I did however only a few years ago get a hold of the collected Armada comic, so I at least got to know the end of that story.

We got the Transformers DW comics over here in Sweden but it was published as a ''double comic book'', the first part was with the G1 story and then with the Armada one after that. After the G1 mini-series was done while the Armada comic continued they had added in the War Within story. The problem is that we only got 9 issues of the comic, despite that in a smaller text on the first opening page said that Transformers Armada will be released with 10 issues in 2003 but we only got ninth issue and that the tenth issue would be released in December....but I have been looking everywhere on the internet and it doesn't seem to exist a issue 10 of Armada at all. So it is a bummer that the whole international sales stopped because they weren't able to secure the license, which might be the cause of it. Or that the sales of the Armada comic over here was low. I have no clue at all. We also had contests where there was a small quiz on 3-4 comics where you could win yourself a Transformers Armada toy if you answered all the three questions correctly!

I always feel bad that several of the creators working for Dreamwave never got paid. Their work was, and still is, some of my favorite stuff in Transformers and the comics I grew up reading. The Sunstorm arc of the G1 ongoing is one of my favorites to re-read and if I ever got the chance I'd gladly thank those writers and artists for giving me the Transformers of my childhood, hooking me forever onto one of my favorite properties with some of best creative talent I've ever seen or read. I got back into the comics around midway through "Phase 2" of IDW and I never would have if it hadn't been for Dreamwave.

@@residentrump3271 The Unicron Trilogy suffered for a lot of reasons. Cartoon Network was in a rush to get the Armada show on their new Saturday night lineup even though it wasn't ready, the studio they were using to dub the show didn't have their info straight (five different characters were called Leader-1 in the early episodes), nobody told the replacement Japanese studio that Cybertron/Galaxy Force was supposed to be in the same continuity as the two previous shows, and I've maintained for years that none of the media used the Mini-Con idea to their full potential, writing them off as power boosters rather than weapons and armor unless they had another mode. The comics at least made the Mini-Cons into characters but they disappeared for Energon, made a less annoying Kicker but gave him superpowers beyond being an Energon "divining rod", and told some really good stories with the characters. It didn't have the issues the shows did so it was able to achieve better results.

@@ShadowWingTronix I get what you're saying, but the Energon animated series was still inferior to DW comics version. As you noted, DW made the minicons much more appealing than the animated series, I loved what they did with the arc depicting Duallor (I may have spelled his name wrong) being a self appointed minicon savior. The Unicron trilogy deserved a better animated version and a completed comic from Dreamwave. Just one humble nerd's opinion...

Dreamwave's failure always makes me sad because what the writers were doing had me so excited, especially what James and Adam were doing on the main series. IDW never inspired that as much in me. It was fun, action packed, and they seemed to really be building up to something, one of the few times the quasi-spiritual aspects actually worked for me. Additionally, I've never been a fan of Simon's work in Transformers most of the time, but somehow what he did in Armada and Energon I really liked. (I even liked what Saracinni did in the first Armada story and I was NOT a fan of the first G1 miniseries. Something magical about that series.) As for Wildman, complain about the house style affecting his if anyone out there wants to but in the Marvel run they looked like people in costumes while in the Dreamwave stories they actually looked like robots. I also liked what they were doing with MegaMan, continuity errors aside, and while their take on TMNT was hardly in line with the Fox cartoon it was supposed to be a tie-in to, the Archie comics did the same thing with the original cartoon and still made their own decent continuity. So if Pat Lee hadn't screwed everyone over this would have been a great Transformers franchise addition rather than a disaster. It's still my favorite take thus far, which makes me sad it never achieved the greatness it was headed for.

I was a big fan of it, but it wasn't what the DW audience wanted! DW and Devil's Due had a tendency to advertise these kinds of TF comics by doing little more than showing some designs and saying "look what they turn into in THIS one!" (the War Withins, the DDP Joe crossovers), and that's how they promoted the WWII crossover, with lots of toyetic Don Fig designs. But then the book itself arrived, and Jae Lee was just not here to draw toys bashing into one another! I've never forgotten that moment where the Joes think they've run into an ordinary soldier, wearing a trenchcoat and a helmet, and Lee's art fully sells that... until suddenly from out of the shadows the PILE DRIVERS emerge and you realise it's RUMBLE! Wouldn't have worked in the DW faux-anime style everyone was grousing about it not having back in the day!

While I loved DreamWave's anime look to the art style, the brothers Lee were just arrogant to break away from Image. When Image was founded, most if not all of its creators released their titles under their respective studios with the Image "I". I loved James Raiz's artstyle for Armada, I even remember hunting down each issue of the More Than Meets The Eye books unitil I had them all. Dan Figueroa became an instant favorite for me, because ofhis artstyle, and when he began the (incomplete) monthly, the best story was with SunStorm. I loved how Guido Guidi's artstyle had an animation look to it for Armada. Well, can't wait for the next episode of The Basics. Wonder what's it gonna be about....? :)

Dreamwave is a prime example of just because they were the first to bring a series back to the fore, doesn't mean it always has the best intentions. But, it can never be understated or overstated just how DW effectively brought the brand back from obscurity. So many ideas and concepts. So many fan favorites....and the utter disappointment when it all came crashing down because of inexperienced leadership. But it is why I have more respect for IDW because DW embodies more of a classical depiction of Mecha, IDW could be considered the modernized version. Although, I can understand why people would prefer Dreamwave. as both really they tell the story, just in different ways. With different styles. That said, whatever became of Dream Engine? Did it ever succeed or did it bomb like DreamWave Proper? Or the Lee Brothers?

While Dreamwave brought back the comics there were still shows and toys so to say the franchise was dead is not accurate. Generation 2, while consisting of reruns of the G1 cartoon, had it’s own toy line and comics. And Beast Wars and Beast Machines were both new concepts for Hasbro and had their shows and toys. And in the early 2000s we got the original Robots in Disguise cartoon and toys as well as the Unicron Trilogy which Dreamwave did make some comics for.

For DreamWave, they used what could be considered "chunky" and blockier designs that wouldn't be too out of place on a Gundam, much like how Toei would animate robots and mobile suits. Modern depictions would have a lot more integrated details, sleeker designs, more moving parts to build up the hype, and sharper edges like antenna, armored plates, and many other elements. The cliffhangers we were left on were extremely painful. Once IDW started, I picked up the first few issues and the art wasn't dynamic, the cost was much higher per issue and I just couldn't do it, I dropped it completely. I think the silver lining with DW is that so many of the names mentioned in this episode are still important to the Transformers comics today. Just a shame Pat didn’t pay them. This made me want to look over some of my sparse DW collection to have a little chuckle so I found an Armada comic that was distributed for Free Comic Book Day. Turns out Figuroa drew it so there wasn’t much to dunk on. There was however a letter from Pat Lee to the fans printed in the back which reads quite awkwardly with the benefit of hindsight.

Dreamwave's Transformers was the first series where I personally wanted to try and get every variant of each issue. Up till then, I was fine with just getting single issues for whatever series I was reading at the time but for some reason, I just had to have each of the different cover arts for the Dreamwave series. I know the store I was going to at the time liked it because instead of just one sale they had two or even three if they could get a copy of the RI cover for me. I'm still missing issues from the run but I'm not as worried about completing it as I was back then. Even with the IDW runs, I'm fine with just getting one copy of each issue. There was just something about the DW cover art at the time that make it feel like you needed them all.

I think part of that was, for the first mini series, each issue had 2 regular variant covers, and each variant had a different pull-out poster inside, with all 12 combining into one huge image. That trick really conditioned buyers into a "must get all variants" way of thinking!

I don't know if it really bothers me so much that it was thought of, it's just that some ideas could have been recycled or finished in a better way but well at least the continuity of idw despite some of its problems (I still think the idea of making Starsaver a villain was going too far) my opinion a worthy reinvention of the generation 1 universe with elements of basically all the others. thanks for the video
