I've always found "evil autobots" (or at least, "morally flexible" autobots) to be an interesting concept in the franchise, because it adds a bit more nuance to their lore than just "autobots good, decepticons bad!" It sort of hammers home the idea that if you take away the insignias, the cybertronians really aren't that much different than human beings.

The ironic thing is I actually like that they made Getaway a villian. An evil Autobot is sorta rare in my perspective, seeing as I have read a few Idw comics in the past, mainly the MTMTE series.

Perhaps to the point where the decepticons wouldn’t even know that he is or ever was on their side. There’d need to be a lot more that’d need to go into it but that would be the obvious path I think. I would imagine if getaway was just a really nice autobot who put others ahead of himself. He would be dead I’m pretty sure.

Getaway is an amazing character in MtMtE and Lost Light. An M.T.O who was literally created to fight, who was seen by both himself and others as disposable. He never really chose to be an Autobot; he was MADE an Autobot. So it makes sense that he never really embraced Autobot ideals, and ended up with a personality disorder. What I find brilliant is how his glib, charming personality even manages to draw in a lot of the audience, which is how you know a psychopathic/narcissistic character is really written well. His issue was never really with Megatron being on the ship. He just used the justified resentment of the other crew members to get them on his side for the mutiny. But his finely-honed ability to manipulate people's emotions to his advantage made even much of the audience believe that he was being sincere. A true psychopath, through and through.

Personally I’d love to see a more complex version of the character containing both virtuous traits from his earlier incarnations and the more villainous steak of his IDW one. A character who performs morally dubious actions but has his own sense of ethics that prevent him from being an outright mustache twirling villain, like I feel the IDW version of him became over time.

After this came out, Getaway did perish, when the Red Scraplet horde he kept inside the Lost Light as a means of executing mutineers bonded with the colony that was under Whirl's care. The Scraplets then merged into the image of Primus (the fake one from myth, not Rung) and ate Getaway alive.

That's part of the irony of his hatred of the reformed Megatron: He acts in a very similar manner to the way Megs did before he was redeemed. Furthermore, he also has heavy parallels with Rodimus, whom he also hates. Rodders isn't a terrible leader, but he does have the fatal flaw of having a massive ego and a hero complex. 'The Gloaming' spells it out that Rodimus hates not being able to save his comrades, he hates the idea of failing them, even if someone else saved them in the end, and this dates back all the way to Spotlight: Hot Rod, where his entire squad was massacred on his watch, and he spent years blaming himself for it. Like Rodimus, Getaway is a reasonably competent leader, but he is weakened by his massive ego and god complex. While people have put forward that point that perhaps Getaway was right to try and remove Megatron from the ship by forcing him to kill one of the crew, the fact that he takes the thoroughly unheroic route of emotionally manipulating Tailgate, instead of the heroic route of attempt to sacrifice himself, exposes the fact that, in his mind, it's all about him.

Megs acted pretty darn redeemed, and his new Fusion Cannon, one of Brainstorm's morality-detecting weapons, was firing Autobot orange lasers. He tried to sacrifice himself to the DJD's mercy if it protected the rest of the crew, with no-one watching, and chose to stay and defend the lost ones even when he believed that they were organics. He'd still be trying to get to Cyberutopia if Terminus hadn't betrayed him. Rodimus: Brought the incredibly powerful and murderous Overlord onto the Lost Light. Getaway: Brought the incredibly powerful and murderous Sunder on board, then repeated the performance with Star Saber. Rodimus: Makes a reward system based on his own face, but it actually works and motivates the crew. Getaway: Feeds dissenting crewmembers to Sunder. Rodimus: Endangers his crew by leading them into missions where they might die. Getaway: Murders his crew personally. Megatron: Wants to find Cyberutopia so he can give the Transformers a new home, in place of the one he and Optimus destroyed, and leave a better legacy than death and destruction. Getaway: Wants to find Cyberutopia because he's deluded enough to think of himself as worthy of Primacy. Yeah, Rodimus may have earned the ire of his crew, but Getaway actively kills them. I'll stick with the Megs-and-Rod Squad.

Getaway and Slapdash, followed by Lightspeed the Motorvator were some of my last few Transformers generation 1 toys as child- I must have been 5/6 I think. I still have them to this day. I had no idea anything more had been made of Getaway outside of the marvel comics I collected. I always partnered him with the other Autobot cars such as Jazz and Hotrod during my 'epic wars'!

(SPOILER WARNING FOR GETAWAYS ULTIMATE FATE IN IDW) In case any of you are curious Getaway's ultimate fate in the IDW comics he and Rodimus engaged in a final duel. Getaway ended up in a position where he would have gotten killed by a raging fire but Rodimus vowing to prove that he wasn't like Getaway even after everything Getaway did saved him intending to take him to a proper trial. So naturally how does Getaway repay Rodimus? He tries to stab him in the back first chance he gets but right before he does Getway sees a vision of Primus. Getaway reaches out ready to become a prime...but it turns out Primus was just a horde of scraplets that disguised themselves as Primus. And thus Getaway's story ends with him being eaten alive by scraplets. Karma is a bitch ain't it?

It sounds like the IDW writers used Getaway as a analog to our crooked President. (I guess if he were Huffer's shade of orange, it'd be more obvious.) He even seems to have a Trump-sized karma shield. Knowing this, I think I still prefer his G1/Marvel and Masterforce incarnations.

It's bit ironic that Getaway makes name of himself by becoming the villain. That must be result of not been in any TF cartoons for long time. But I have feeling that Getaway will get the come up that he has deserved in TF IDW comics.

Getaway also had a number of appearances throughout the G1 comic after issue 42 and survived the Unicron war but in Issue 80, he was blown up by his old Decepticon rivals Darkwing and Dreadwind so I guess in the end, he couldn't get away.... LOL!. He may have been resurrected by the Last Autobot at the end of the issue and series but we'll never know for sure.

Wait wait, he was from the original G1? WHAT? I thought IDW created him. Wow, i really need to revisit the original because i totally did not remember him. And i read the whole marvel series. Well, the problem is partly that the hungarian translation gave him another name and he looked different. I had no idea the character who was shot to pieces at the start of one of the last issues of the G1 comic, - I remember that scene from the event where the decepticons lead by Bludgeon slaughtered the fucked up offensive of Grimlock. - was Getaway.
