When I heard about the TF One's plot, I was bugged that most of the cast became miners, because besides D-16, it did not suit them at all. But then I realized, it was the entire point, they don't fit as miners because they weren't meant to be.

My personal headcanon for transformers one is that orion was originally meant to work at the archives and did for a little bit but was reassigned to being a miner in the wake of sentinel's betrayal, which is why he has an actual name rather than a designation like d-16 and b-127, it also helps explain why he knows the archives layout and security so well

My only issue with this is that it was only after Sentinel's betrayal that they started removing cogs, so if Orion worked as an archivist before Sentinel came to power, he'd know cogs were being taken from young Transformers.

The rebooted IDW universe where Orion started off as a data clerk but then became a politician is interesting, because it is a good way to explain why Optimus is both highly wise and intelligent yet also a cunning leader. Both jobs having taught him skills he would use effectively as a General. We are shaped by our experiences so it's nice when the backstory of a character provides a clear path from beginning to end of their development in way that makes the most sense.

I hope so! The characterization of D-16 in the film was personally my favorite. While ultimately he's seen as the villain at the end, his endgame is understandable as he wants a free Cybertron where no workers or bots are suppressed in a corrupt system that he himself was a subject affected by said corrupt system

I really hope so too, but the poor box office turnout has me worried that Hasbro might just decide to cut their losses and move on to another reboot attempt instead. Most other stories depicting these 2 as friends often do so by showing D-16 having a cause to champion right from the start, & Orion Pax joining him later & growing close due to having shared visions & ideals. In that sense, they're comrades. Their relationship bound by their noble causes instead of personal matters, & there's a limit how close people like that can become, & how much the audience can relate to their stories. In this movie, they're already buddies before there's even a cause. They're friends with each other due to casual, possibly even stupid reasons, & that's how people like you & me make friends, & people also form simple friendships far often than comradeship. Such personal, intimate friendships also tend to be a lot closer than comradeship over a shared cause, as the parties involved serve themselves & each other instead of some higher cause above themselves. While it's often & even understandable for comradeships to fracture & collapse due to ideological differences, which are hardly personal over half of the time, falling out of simple yet close friendships hurt a lot worse & feels a lot sadder because they're so much more personal.

His threats are alarmingly creative, he’s quick to shift blame, his favorite prime was notorious for his strength, and Orion appeals to his ego once or twice. He definitely had that anger in him from the start, it was just never given a chance to really show.

While there were indeed signs saying that his ego was inflated somewhat, all of that aggression was a result of Orion kept roping him into situations he never wanted to be a part of. There're only so many times a regular dude can tolerate that kinda shit before getting so annoyed that he can't help flaring up. It can happen to just about anyone & underlying anger issues wouldn't need to be involved at all. I'm by & large a chill guy & even i'd get pissed getting myself into trouble almost constantly because of having a friend like Orion.

TF ONE is my favorite version. Coming from the lower class, invading the library to learn, wanting a more equal society, uniting the people to take down the opressive system, doing all with courage to fight, compassion and empathy and finally becoming a Prime by his actions and beliefs proving him worthy. Also this movie reminded that "when education is not liberating, the dream of the oppressed is to become the oppressor". Because Orion and D-16 came from the same place but Orion sought to learn, started questioning and then fought for equality while D-16 admired power and strengh, never questioned and then sought to destroy so he could rule.

That's the main flaw of the Aligned version, tbh, along with Megatron starting the war out of jealousy. Thankfully, while Aligned succeeded in creating the generalized mythology that Transformers now pretty much draws from, most series eschew both of those elements, giving Megatron less petty reasons for starting the war (yes, being simply power hungry is less petty than jealousy), and, in this case Orion being a reincarnation. It works better when he is just an ordinary civilian. To a lesser extent, I'm not fond of Rodimus' affinity to the Matrix having a similar destiny. It's also just so much better that he's an ordinary bot whose qualities get him chosen to wield the Matrix, as is the case in 86

It’s always interested me in what the intended meaning of those names were. Orion Pax alludes to either a “hunter of peace/peace hunter” or “heaven’s light (of) peace/peace of heaven’s light”. Optimus Prime can simply be “best (&) first”, but I always appreciated my sister’s interpretation from when we were kids way back in the ‘80s: Best Leader. I’m gonna go with that.

I particularly like the Aligned/Prime version. Both Peime and Megatron saw the same quality in Jack. OP was heartened by this but wanted Jack to make hos own choices valuing Jack's freedom. Megatron recognized that same quality and singled him out. He wasn't going to underestimate such heroics a second time.

Transformers one Orion is probably one of my favorite versions of the character, I like that his personality kinda resembles Hot Rod before he became a prime. And I like him being a working class bot like his g1 self, I think Optimus works better with a humble origin instead of being a reincarnation or descendant of the primes

I want a version of Orion Pax that really takes advantage of the "archivist" idea by making him a huge history geek. The type that would squeal with excitement at the idea of seeing an ancient artefact like the Matrix or the Allspark in person, or especially meeting one of the Thirteen. Then he becomes leader and feels he has to put on a stoic persona all the time even when met with events like that, and everyone around him who knew him as Orion would know just how he's feeling inside.

i like a lot of the unintentional symbolism in the original cartoon. where megatron, as the most dangerous violence, has an alt form that is personal and intentional, optimus, the backbone of the fight for peace, is just some shlub, carrying the supplies that make society functional. having them be working class laborers, with first hand experience with how hard life can be, underlines how impactful different choices can be.

What I really get from Orion Pax and the leader who does not know his destiny. Is the legend of King Arthur. In this King Arthur is Optimus Prime, with the Matrix Of Leadership being the sword Excalibur. With Alpha Trion being Merlin. Either by guiding Orion Pax to his destiny. Manipulating his journey by guiding him or creating him into the leader. That's just my take on it.

Am I the only one who thinks G1 Orion Pax's head resembles something from Meso-American artwork (i.e. Aztec, Olmec, Mayan)? Anyways, as long as there is no 'destined by birth' situation involved, I'm fine with just about any version of Orion/Optimus' origin. It's always more interesting when a character begins as a normal person before evolving into a heroic figure. The latest movie pulled off that concept very well, along with D-16/Megatron growing into a fearsome tyrant.

Another thing about G1 Orion Pax that's pretty interesting is that his design was made by Floro Deary originally for Ultra Magnus in The Transformers: The Movie. However, when it was discovered that a Diaclone toy fit the bill slightly better, Deary's design would be recycled to become Orion Pax in War Dawn.

I just watched the movie and it was FANTASTIC. The parallel lines of how Orion and D-16 became what we know them as was brilliant. The movie really updated and brought together a lot of the elements of Transformers lore in a way that's accessible for the younger generation while at the same time being respectful to the fans that came before. I look forward to more movies done in the style TF:One.

i really appreciated the orion pax redesign as i was never a fan of the g1 look. man, ONE was such a great film, and the action was so good! i really loved the over the shoulder views when someone would be in vehicle mode. i felt like perhaps they took some cues from fast and furious films. and the director did an excellent job of making the race scene an exceptional segment as i immediately thought to myself, “oh no. this is the phantom menace 2.0”, but it rose above that by miles. i cant wait to purchase the movie, and watch it regularly.

To me, I believe the PERFECT Orion PAx situation would merge the most significant concepts for his rise to Prime: Orion Pax would be a descendant of the Prime lineage, like most iterations, but that's where his similarities to the Primes up to that point would end. He would prove himself as a worthy successor of the Matrix and be granted the choice of whether or not to bear its power. Accepting it, he would be reborn as Optimus Prime

The sequel for Transformers One has a great opportunity to drive home the lore that Megatron and Optimus (not Orion and D-16) were brothers in arms, and have some movie continuity that D-16 is not completely gone yet. Then, the conclusion for that will solidify Megatron and Optimus as arch-enemies, and Megatron and the Decepticons as the villains we know, starting the famous War for Cybertron. Every outcome stems from the character's own choices. It's perfect.

To right now, The Aligned and TF ONE have THE ABSOLUTE BEST origins, but of the 2 for the first time.....TF ONE is my favorite retelling of Optimus and Megatron origins, I love how well they show us how close D-16 and Orion Pax where, brothers almost, they friendship is the most genuine of all continuities, make it the more tragic when D-16 finally turns, that scene that now I didn't knew was inspired by IDW comics, really showing the birth not just of Optimus but also Megatron, is just my FAVORITE SCENE IN TRANSFORMERS HISTORY, this to me will be the definitely re telling and most generations will definitely be inspired by it. Again hats down for the team that write TF one, condense all of these in 1 single film is a work of art, and again the Aligned continuation is the most influenced as you can see how much inspiration the film took from TF Prime, I really hope this movie recovers man, we need more films in this continuity.

In all other tellings of the friendship between Orion Pax & D-16, it's actually comradeship instead of just friendship as we know it. Few people dedicate their lives serving noble causes & fewer can claim themselves to have solid comradeship with anyone. Simply put, all the other tellings of their stories ain't something most people can relate to. In TF ONE, there's no cause. There's no purpose higher than either of them. None of the 2 set out to be defenders & champions of the destitute & downtrodden. They became friends only because they liked each other's vibe. They're buddies who hang out at work for breaks & chats, & after work for drinks & silly shenanigans. THAT is the kind of friendship that gets really REALLY personal, & also why it felt so genuine.

I'm going to say it. I GREATLY prefer Orion's origins that exclude him being a reincarnated Demi-God. Rodimus Prime is a more fitting candidate since his role in the 86 film was that of a chosen one and the reincarnated 13th Prime feels like a perfect origin for him. Optimus being from more humble origins whose noble spirit, strength in his gentle nature, and heroic soul made him worthy to stand alongside those of divinity and his Creator something that is more inspiring than him being special because he was born special. it's also a reason i dislike the line Optimus told the Fallen in the ROTF comic about how "Primes aren't made, they're born" which feels like the antithesis to what Optimus is

I like the movie hints at Optimus and Megatron’s alt origins with them both being miners but Pax is obsessed with the old archives and D-16 beating Starscream in combat to lead the high guard.

While I appreciate the nuance that's been added to the Transformers universe, with Cybertron being filled with inequality or with Megatron having an actual philosophical point... There's a part of me that really wants to go back to the original cartoon with "Cybertron was a utopia until Megatron decided he should be the ruler of everything and gathered up all the malcontents and psychopaths on the planet to do it"

Should be noted that the Aligned continuity was fairly messy, having some contradicting materials due to poor management and plans falling apart. Still, it is great seeing some of the things introduced in Aligned becoming staples within the lore. Also, Megatron was actually going by the name Megatronus prior to the war, naming himself just like the Prime he admired. It was only after Orion became the new Prime that he shortened his name into Megatron. I will say that I do wish we had gotten the gladiatorial origins for Megatron/D-16 in TFO, as I feel like that adds a great deal to his ruthless and combative nature. I have heard some people say that there were plans for something like that in the movie, though I haven't been able to confirm if they were mere plans or possibly removed scenes. Still, TFO really has proven to be one of the better Transformers films in recent years, even if the promotional side of things did a rather lackluster job of selling the film as a love letter to the legendary franchise.

While i do like the idea of Orion being a reincarnation of the original primes, I don't like the 'destined to rule' part. If memory serves me correctly, even back then, the reason why the guy chose to be reincarnated was so that he could walk among the people as their equal, not their demigod ruler. I feel that sentiment is often overlooked whenever Orion Pax is being depicted as a reincarnation of a prime. As such, while i'd like that reincarnation of a prime included in an Orion Pax story, i'd like for him to have been chosen to wield the matrix because of his will & deeds, then having gotten blasted by Megatron for getting in the latter's way. I'd like the journey leading up to him becoming Optimus Prime being circumstantial, not because that's just his birthright due to his previous divine prime status. His previous life as a demigod could be worked into the story just being the reason why he's so unusually compassionate to his fellow bots & why he's so naturally inspirational, & maybe as a plot device to give him access to some stuff the Autobots would need in furthering their cause or quest, instead of being central & of great importance to his current form & identity as Optimus Prime.

When I saw the trading cards with all the character designs, and the 13 Primes were included, I realized one of them must be new to the roster since during the Aligned Continuity, only twelve were named. I think it was a smart choice to make Zeta Prime one of the 13, since there had been some trouble with who he was in the Aligned Continuity.

I would argue that even in the Aligned Continuity, Optimus didn’t receive the Matrix because he was 13 reincarnated or “destined” for it, but because he had proven his nobility like he has in other timelines. Otherwise he would have recieved the Matrix right away, not after he had lived as Orion Pax and done other things.
