I think Hasbro's Classics/Universe/Generations toys are as much collectibles as Takara's equivalents, but the difference is that Hasbro also has to design and price them to be available to/playable by children. They have to be children's toys as much as they are collectibles. Same with Marvel Legends and Star Wars: The Black Series.

Mini-Con Longarm Well, I'm more saying that the Classics/Universe/Generations figures are equally kid's toys and collectibles. Neither of those two qualities overpowers the other when it comes to the figures in these lines.

Over the long term your point is what will make stuff like that go up in value much more. Anything designed specifically for the collectible market at best retains its original price/value. You might see some spikes early on because of demand but because of the high price points and who they're aimed at means there will be a lot of them around later on and they'll all be extremely well kept. Kids tear up boxes, lose pieces, break parts,mess up paint,etc so years later when mint condition ones show up,they're worth a lot more money. Plus at that point you're selling the item to someone that's buying back a piece of their childhood and high end collectibles aren't part of that for them. I've been a dealer for quite a few years,learned from my parents before me.

Well obviously Hasbro made this figure with Astrotrain in mind. But they always look to maximize the majority of their tooling and use what they can for other characters, like Sentinel here.

Also you'll be glad to know that on Astrotrain, they actually put some paint on the train "cab" section, its grey on the cow catcher and purple on the rest of the bit, and to me it appears to have black or dark grey windows but, knowing Hasbro, its doubtful

My Sentinel Prime figure is a QC nightmare. When I took it out of the box, the face on Infinitus' back came off because there wasn't a screw. The thighs on the Infinitus are also backwards, so he can't fold up all the way. and there's a huge gap in the head. And the worst part is that this is an SDCC figure, so getting a replacement is near impossible

How well do the side panels on the legs stay attached? One of the first video's that I saw of Sentinel (it very well may have been a colored prototype) showed them detaching fairly often. The only reason I ask is because it will probably be the make or break for me getting it.

Hey Optibotimus. So I just bought a Detolf from IKEA, and geez there's not as much room in there as I thought there would be. Do you have any tips on maximizing space on those shells? Great review btw.

Sorry to butt in, but are you talking about shelves? I found the best thing to do is to go to the hardware section of a store and buy the steel bookcase type shelves used in garages and stuff. They are a lot cheaper, stronger and weigh less. It's what I use and they are so much more secure because you can adjust the feet on them to make sure they are level.

I haven’t bought a transformers figure since dotm/fall of cybertron line and I REALLY want to get back into transformers because they look so great I want to start off with Galvatron because I’ve always wanted a G1 like galvatron and man he’s pricey online so the only way I can get him in a decent price is with a set with this figure so I came to your review and I am very impressed with the figure but I’m not a big sentinel fan like you I was introduced to him in the animated series ...anyways I hope I like him in person otherwise he’s going on eBay

not even sure why these are seriously very popular in my area, the past weekend I check out like 2 targets and 5 walmarts and 1 toys R us and almost every where they were sold out, there were like 1 or 2 toys here and there but mostly they were sold out of them, I'm baffled as to why? why are these even popular. Completely different continuity though. This is his Titans Return incarnation which is based more on the look he has in the current IDW comics, which itself was modeled after his G1 version.

MrHusang23 Because it's a different continuity, so it's almost as if it's a completely different character that may just share the name. Several characters have completely different alt modes, colour schemes or personalities depending on what continuity it is. Optimus Prime was a fire truck in the RID series from 2001 despite being a red semi with a grey trailer in the majority of other series before & after that. It can get confusing at times (even for me & i've been a fan since the 1st episode in 1984) but probably the easiest way to explain it is look at the continuities as alternate realities. An example would be here in this reality my name is Raine, i was born in Toronto, i'm obsessed with Transformers & aliens, & i worked at Zaxby's for 7 years. In a different reality (or continuity) my name might still be Raine, but i might have been born in Italy, grew up obsessed with Scuba diving, work in a car repair shop & never paid any attention to Transformers. My name is the same in both realities, but virtually everything else in my life is completely different, i might have a similar personality, but have a different hairstyle & wear different clothes too. So just like Sentinel Prime here, my name in both realities/continuities may be the same but that's about all the 2 versions of me have in common. In this reality i was never into Scuba diving & in that reality i never liked Transformers, just like the Titans Return Sentinel Prime never became a fire truck & the DotM Sentinel was never a space train..

I don't feel the gimmicks hurt things too much so far. Galvatron might be the most intrusive but i don't think it's all that bad honestly

Everything being a triple changer has to make the designs more challenging. Though I guess the head being removable can make some things simpler.

Is anyone else kinda disappointed that with all the obscure and unnecessary combiners we got with Combiner Wars, we never got a proper Dinobots combiner? Oh wait... they would have had to make all new molds for each figure instead of repainting five other figures... Guess that explains it but come on Hasbro! That old power combiner with the Dinobots was crap and wasn't the actual dinobots. Consider this guy unsatisfied. Oh and this Sentinel Prime guy is ok. Looking forward to Astro Train

In regards to Generations being for kids well I have to argue that while yeah while kids are among the target group it's also adults/young adults that also make up the group that's being aimed because the Generations line is meant to include characters from all eras which people whatever era they grew up in want to see updated in modern form. So yeah using it's for kids argument can only take you so far since adult fans are rightly expecting Generations figure to be up to par with how you update them.That said I do agree with you on how the Generations figures now have to do things to help get them into the right price point in America because things like articulation and paint do cost money to do which is why I don't get that hung up about minor paint jobs and things like wrist articulation and ankle tilts. Doesn't help that the economy in America isn't up to par compared to the last decade. Japan however doesn't have that same retail system we have in America which is why Takara is able to give the figures more paint and some cases more retooling and articulation as a result. This isn't me making excuses for some of the blunders Hasbro does make it's just bringing in some points and factors about why Hasbro sometimes make decisions that aren't popular with people even if they're understandable and valid.

You also have to look at the customer base. Kids today aren't buying and playing with Transformers like we did as kids (we as in people my age who were in the 7-10 age group when they came out in 1984), they have way more options and are moire into digital things. Talking to employees at Walmart and Toys R Us, most action figures now are sold to adults in the 25-50 year old range, so to say they are made for kids is kind of a misnomer. As for differences between Hasbro and Takara releases, another reason (other than the ones you mentioned) is that America has so many regulations on how toys have to be made, it costs more for Hasbro to send in a figure to be OK'd than it does for Takara to completely design a new figure. (There was a big deal when they started re-releasing GI Joe figures where the government wouldn't let them release a figure because the figures finger fit into the trigger guard.) Glad to see someone else that gets it and doesn't just hate on Hasbro for following the rules that our elected officials put in place.
