Having pulled multiple X1/9 engines, it is much easier to use the engine hoist to lower the engine onto one of the wooden 4-wheeled dollies from Harbor Freight. Once the engine is on the dolly, move the hoist to the cars import mounts and raise the body, then roll the engine out the wheel well and you are done. This is much easier than having the engine wobbling on the jack and worrying about it falling over.

The original car was quite refined on account of having soft springs, long travel suspension, narrow high profile tyres, and no anti roll bars primarily. It also has heavy flywheel, reasonable torque and not much power. A budget performance build, would wisely not require modifying the engine mounts. Therefore would use the best block that fits the original mounts. The factory 1600 stroker crank and block from the later Tipo or Stilo. A good automotive machinist could transform that motor into a 190bhp 1800cc 8500 rpm 11:1 compression N/A screamer on ITB's running off a stand alone ECU. Lockers and short or close ratios for the Ritmo Abarth 130TC by Bacci, fit inside the original X1/9 transmission casings, retain the Fiat 5th gear for comfortable cruising. You can lighten the car enormously as well, down to 750 kg cheaply. The 2-litre 380bhp Alfa D2 powered X1/9's driven by M Dondi/ G Ticci, have some carbon components, and plastic instead of glass etc, weigh only 650kg. Mine's a 150 bhp 795 kg restomod, lowered 3" on coilovers, will be finished in 2 yrs. Good luck 😃🤞

After owning 6 X1/9s in my life. You have to understand. This motors crutch was low end torque and fuel econony. best power is 100Hp after upgrades

do you have any tips i replaced timing belt and tensioner but the belt keeps sliding around the pulleys but it has tension

Does it slide off the end? I haven’t had that issue before. Do you have the right size belt?

@@GarageTimeTV No it doesnt slide off but it gets to the edge and starts rubbing on the cam flange that keeps belt from falling off. i have a 81 spider.

@@seezyn5262 interesting. I never had mine move. Is your tension spring in the hole all the way? Sometimes you have to tap it in.
