Your comments about removing the battery feel backwards. That's the best feature of this IMO. You can get a 2nd battery and do another 6000ft, where otherwise, you're charging your Kenevo while you could be out doing laps. They should ALSO include a port though so it can be charged on the bike, along with off.
@EMTBReview
@EMTBReview Жыл бұрын
Our main objection is there is no charging port on the bike. The simple task of charging the battery will be more cumbersome and that will add up over the hundreds of times this bike is charged. Yes, most bikes in the space have removable batteries. A feature that is really desired in this category is external battery extenders. That way the rider can carry as much or as little battery as the ride requires.

Didn't think about the .... obvious of using the 2nd battery to swap out the drained unit, and continue with the fun. However, I do want an option to charge the Relay without taking out the battery on those multi-day eMTB trips. I asked Transitions whether a charge port will be added to the future model and the answer was "NO!" (very dismissive "no"). The answer from the sales guy at Transition was .... not in exact wording but "why? we have been swapping the battery in and out for a year without any issues". I guess not everyone is an "industrial" engineer who worries about the maximum number of latching the battery to the bike's power port, on the frame ...😢😢.

Good review! Your pro's and con's were excellent. A few points I would like to add being a Relay (GXPNW) rider myself, is that I have had no issues with rattle in the battery compartment so I am unsure if your build was one of the earlier designs. I also ride mine without the battery in areas where no eMTB's are allowed and have had no issues with folks. I was even at Whistler recently for Crankworx and had the same interaction with the lift operators who were quite intrigued and gave me no issues. In my experience it all comes down to educating the public. MTB's like the Relay and the Pivot Shuttle that run the Fazua 60 are still new on the market so many folks are still unaware of the capabilities and evolutionary properties these bikes offer. Full disclosure, I've been riding my GXPNW and have left my other bikes in the garage. This thing eats everything up on the garliest tech and single track, and jumping pro lines on this bike has been an absolute blast. Awesome review sir, and great job collecting those data points. Thumbs up!

Another great video, nice job. My rule of thumb on the % used vs distance (I have 4 ebikes), is 2% charge per .1 mile or 100’ ascent. In your trials, you got 510’ = 9%. In my experience, that’s because the battery is fully charged. The ratio begins to roll off as the battery is consumed. And then towards the end of the battery, the ratio shifts further & you won’t get as much mileage. Everyone who’s ever used a flashlight, cordless drill, or anything battery powered knows that devices operate differently between a full and low charge. (Too wordy?😬) Nice review as always.👍😉

Very, very good. Yeah on Shimano, the first 20% of battery is good for about 1200 feet of climbing for me. The last 20%, about 600 feet. The voltage drops and the manufacturers don't account for it in their % calculations. Also they try to protect the battery on the last 20%. Specialized though is more advanced in this area and they normalize the battery % gauge since they can account for the voltage drop that is very predicatable.

@EMTBReview Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the video got too long. I'll have a SRAM on ebike dedicated video. Basically, the SRAM Eagle Transmission is pretty good with ebikes. I can shift under power much better than the old SRAM Eagle since it's slower and it waits for its ideal shift points. Upshifts under power are a bit louder. Never heard a loud pop or crack despite many awkward, powered shifts. I wouldn't upgrade an old bike to it, though. It still has too many speeds for ebikes, and the price and the thickness of the chain and cogs are not ideal for a high-stress ebike. Shimano SLX seems to perform just as well and is much cheaper to maintain.

I demo'd the Fauza60 on the Pivot SL in January...not a lot of elevation gain but got abt 13.5 mi full turbo in chunk. I'm heavy, so range to power ratio was impressive...I had to work a little bit and agility gain for pop was nice. I couldn't get the 10 sec boost to work consistently...and the long 3-4 sec ramp up required esquisite timing on the punchy, short ups. Eliminate the ramp up! The Pivot techs said they found it to be, well to be kind..."almost useless". Not my words, so hate on someone else peeps.😉 I'm hoping to demo soon The Relay soon. But the travel on the 170 mullet PNW is what I'd want. And a slightly bigger 550 Wh battery for another 1.5 lb+ tradeoff. 🤙
@EMTBReview
@EMTBReview Жыл бұрын
Great share! Yes, the turbo mode is kind of a gimmick and I can't see where it will be useful. It's a party trick to pass your friends if you'r both at the limit right before the peak. For steep, tech sections, it's a possibility that one can make a climb only with it. But more likely, it'll lead to trouble as it will take away focus and consistency. I'm not sure there's a chance this will see an internal 550wh battery in the near future. Doesn't look like an extender battery is a possibility either.
@tomcagle5324

@@EMTBReview yes surprised the extender is so unavailable...given the need that many might want it on more epic rides! @ 4:24 Being able to enjoy this bike without the battery Is The Whole Point of this bike. I haven't had an opportunity to test ride one yet but I'm hoping that the Relay is the One Bike Solution. There are still lots of places where E-bikes aren't allowed. I want a bike that I can take to Kanuga bike park and self shuttle, then pop out the battery and ride Pisgah (not Eeb friendly). If this bike is useless without the battery, Transition has failed. And I (& I suspect most everybody) disagree with you about taking the battery out to make it a non Eeb. No battery (obviously) = no "E". I only watched to 5:07 since it doesn't sound like you are going to be testing out the non Eeb capabilities.
@EMTBReview
@EMTBReview Жыл бұрын
Riding without the battery is something riders think they want but in reality, no one does it. It is just so unpleasant and there are much better tools more suitable for the task. I have a Canyon Spectral and S-Works Levo that are 38 lbs without battery but i nor anyone I know would never ride these bikes that way. So I did actually test it without a battery. - on the climbing test of 1 mile 510 foot climb, with motor was 6:55. Without battery, it was 17:58 at the exact same pedaling output of 200 average watts. - for descending, it was more sketchy since it removed 5 lbs of forward weight and changed the balance of the bike. It was easier to wash out and on jumping easier to loop out. It just changes the bike quite a bit from the configuration it's going to be ridden on most of the time. I don't think it's the whole point of this bike. It's just a side effect feature of the bike. But in reality, every emtb has this available.
@mmodtomic7119
@mmodtomic7119 Жыл бұрын
@@EMTBReview If the Relay fails as a bike without its battery as you state, then it's just another Eeb. I've already got an Orbea Rise H15 fully factory upgraded. Doesn't seem much of a reason to even consider the Relay. Did you change suspension settings after you removed the battery? If not, do you think it would have any effect? Transition must be pissed that their biggest selling point is well, pointless.
@EMTBReview
@EMTBReview Жыл бұрын
@@mmodtomic7119 Being another emtb is actually a great thing, especially in the hottest mid-power category. This is a great riding bike and that is its biggest objective and selling point. Its travel and geometry is the big differentiator. I have the Rise H15 as well and this one is a more capable, rowdy bike. The Kenevo SL is the great competitor. The Kenevo is very dialed but it needs a little more power. I didn't change the suspension settings. That will make a tiny bit of difference but that will be a huge inconvenience to riders if done each time.

Another point to consider@@mmodtomic7119 with the ability to remove the battery easily, you can fly to different destinations and ride. A big thing here in NZ. Kenevo Sl or Relay since you own one already? Who would you keep? TCU mastermind is fantastic. Hard to leave specialized for that reason. Lots of flaws w/ the Kenevo SL but still managed to make it a great bike to keep. Would love more power and watts though.
@EMTBReview
@EMTBReview Жыл бұрын
Ooof, though one as I just sold my Kenevo SL. It just didn't have enough torque and low-end support for me and it was hard to keep speed on punchy climbs. Motor was noisy too. Other than that, the bike is super-dialed and more polished in all the details compared to the Transition Relay. The Transition wins on the torque and climbing ability. The Kenevo SL is the better descender and package I think. It just needs a more powerful motor. For range, they're about equal since the Kenevo has battery extender capabilities.

My impression of your review is that you were kind of “meh” on it. You called it a “very interesting bike,” (that doesn’t instill confidence). That tells me it’s not a game changer, not an amazing bike, not a leader in its category. That says allot as far as I’m concerned. You didn’t like the battery screen. You thought taking out the battery “doesn’t make any sense.” You thought the Boost mode sucked, and from how you described how it works for only 10 seconds, I would imagine I would agree with you. I 100% agree with you on the five bar power readout; lame. And you have to take the battery out to charge it? That’s just dumb too. From what you’ve described, my impression is that Transition cut big corners. They didn’t really think this bike out. Also agree on the power nomenclature that Fazua created. Just dumb. River and breeze? WTF is that??!!! I’m going to have to demo one before even remotely considering buying this bike. It sounds like a piece of junk.

@@EMTBReview A very good and honest review that identifies many weaknesses that I think any mountain biker would appreciate. Thank you. I bet the new Specialized SL will be much better than the first version. I’m certain they will put more thought into doing it the right way. As in, 60Nm motor and a bigger battery than 320Wh. The 35Nm and 320Wh was a nonstarter for me. Beautiful looking bike though. You just can’t cut corners on bikes that cost $12K, and it looks like that’s what Transition did. It's a hair bit stronger than the TQ motor on the Trek. It'll win a race against the Trek but not by much. In an hour climb, it'll reach the top about 1 or 2 minutes ahead. Its big advantage over the Trek is that it has a bigger battery and is more efficient with the battery. Seems to have less motor resistance, too, with the motor off or when over the 20 mph speed limit. Surprisingly, their noise level is almost identical... and they are best in class on any ebike motor.
