Hi Clint, Sweet bike! I've been able to get my Transition Spur down to 22 lbs 15 oz. It's a 120mm/120mm suspension like yours and that includes powermeter (4iii), bottle cage, and Garmin mount. Key differences that got my weight down are: 9point8 150mm dropper (436g); Rockshox SID Ultimate fork (1352g); Lightcarbon wheels with DTSwiss 180 hubs and CXRay spokes (1246g); Wren stem (54g); Mt. Zoom bar (149g); Garbaruk cassette (349g); and Mixed 7D saddle (105g; I love this saddle, BTW). The bottle cage is a no-name carbon cage. The sub 23 lb weight is with 4oz of sealant per tire, which is what Stans recommends. I actually run with much more than that. So, in honesty, the practical weight of my bike is a bit over 23 lbs. Cheers!

@@alb4619 I didn't mod a full bike. I started with the frame and built it up. The total cost to me, after discounts through my race shop, was about $8,000. Full price would be about $10K. I couldn't get more of a discount through my shop since some of the parts are not ones that they can acquire at wholesale such as the wheels, bar, stem, and saddle. (Regarding the saddle, it's from Aliexpress and cost only $27. It's the deal of the century. I have it on all of my bikes and my wife's bikes.) I'm really happy with this franken-bike. It combines downcountry geometry with xc race weight.

Thanks for this series. I just bought a discounted Trek TopFuel 9.7 and rode it for the first time yesterday and immediately started a list to lighten it and make it a better bike. Sad ~$4k can't buy a bike with everything you need but the dropper post was the #1 issue.

man, i tried and tried to snag one of these a couple years back.. hot item sold out in all corners of the webs.. i ended up getting a Spot Ryve 115, and although that is a great downcountry bike that most ppl have never heard of, i still like the slightly tougher nature of the Spur. it's a beast of a tiny bike! i will be looking for the new color frames after a few months they should start popping up for sale.

I've found that lateral wheel stiffness pairs well with stiffer, more capable frames, and conversely lighter, flexier XC frames pair well with more compliant wheels (up to a point). And then lighter, lower traction XC tires pair best with flexier wheels and frames as that compliance improves tire traction on XC tires. While a stiffer, slacker frame work noticeably better with stiffer wheels with higher grip tires, because the slacker the fork is the more side loading goes into the wheels in tires through turns.

My medium Spur w/ pedals is 23.7lbs or so and I’ve put several thousand miles on it in the CO Rockies w/o issues. In my case, it fails the “cheap” dimension, costing a fair bit of cash to get these kinds of weight while maintaining reliability/durability.

I surprised you're not running 2.4 wide tires on i30mm rims. A 2.4 Maxxis Rekon Race front paired with a 2.4 Aspen ST rear on those i9 rims at 18-20psi is the tire combo I would be wanting. Or a 2.4 Vittoria Mezcal front with a 2.4 Peyote rear might be good.

Hello @Clint, I am a huge fan of your advices because every time I followed your recommendations I made a good purchases. I have a Yt izzo and I love my bike but I am ready to move foward. i am trying to decide in between Epic evo 8 and Spur, performance is nice but I would trade some performance for some capability, which one would you recommend since you rode both? Thanks
@ClintGibbs
@ClintGibbs 21 күн бұрын
Those bikes are really similar. Honestly, it comes down to your access to the bike. That is, how do you feel about the bike shop that sells each of those bikes?.I like the gloss paint job and the swat box on the epic. But the ride of the transition is hard to beat. Still the best bike I’ve ever had, closely followed by my Niner RKT9.

Hi Clint How do you “get away” with all the bikes and parts,etc ? I believe you’re married (wink). Also, I have a gen 1 supercal and wondering what more travel might do for me. Think I am 100 front and 60 rear travel. I train and race the FLE 30 milers. I’d love your input.
@ClintGibbs
@ClintGibbs 27 күн бұрын
More travel is just going to allow you to feel fresher throughout the race and also allow you to sit more often which saves the legs. When I used to compare hardtails to full suspension, I always felt faster on the hard tail but was actually faster than the full suspension. Adding more travel with lightweight wheels, keeping the bike about the same weight, can only help.

I have a gen 1 Supercaliber. Was running it with a 100mm SID Ultimate SL but I found it a little “twitchy” with the gen 1’s steep head tube angle. I switched out the fork to a Fox 34 stepcast with 110mm travel, so stiffer fork with better small bump sensitivity on roots etc and slackens the head angle by 1/2 a degree. Its a lot more confidence inspiring in descents & tech stuff but I do notice The 100 or so grams extra up front going uphill. I did try 120mm of travel but it jacked up the front too much for me. Hope that helps.

I would guess that different pedals have different weights, and the pedal type is a personal choice based on what your last bike had, etc. so taking it out of the calculation makes some sense to me
