Some students asked a question about the sentence 'Suddenly the door opened'. Here the noun the door is the subject. It is not the object. This sentence does not have an object. To find out whether this verb is transitive or intransitive, you should ask the question 'The door opened what?' There is no answer.

'He enjoyed in the party at his friend's home yesterday' -ith transitive or intransitive... In this sentence reflexive pronoun is needed?? If yes,then why???
@perfect-your-english
@perfect-your-english 3 жыл бұрын
The correct sentence is He enjoyed himself at the party at his friend's home yesterday. Some verbs are always transitive. That means they always need a verb. Enjoy is one of them. If the subject and object refer to the same person as in your sentence, you have to use a reflexive pronoun. That means you have to write 'He enjoyed himself.' Or you can write 'He enjoyed the party hosted by his friend.'

@perfect-your-english
@perfect-your-english 3 жыл бұрын
Your book is selling well. That is the sentence. If you put what after the verb you get 'Your book is selling what?' Is there is an answer? No. You can't say that your book is selling your book. So, this verb is intransitive. In this sentence 'your book' is the subject; it is not the object.

Can you help me for a moment - Transitive Verbs . How ? Please explain Do you beleive in gods ? -Intransitive Verbs how ? She was crowned as queen - Intransitive Verbs. How ? Mam please explain it Because tommorow we are having a test .
@perfect-your-english
@perfect-your-english 3 жыл бұрын
Believe is intransitive in that sentence because it has no object. Gods is the object of the preposition in. Verbs followed by prepositions are not normally transitive. Phrasal verbs are an exception to this rule. However, in the sentence I believe him or I believe this, believe is transitive. In the second sentence queen is the complement of the verb crowned. It is not the object. However, in the sentence they crowned her as queen, crowned is transitive because it has an object - her. If there is no noun/ing form immediately after the verb, in most cases it is safe to assume that it is intransitive.

@perfect-your-english
@perfect-your-english 3 жыл бұрын
Cheered in They cheered is intransitive because there is no expressed object here. But cheered is transitive in the sentence 'They cheered him on'. Here it has an object - him. The same verb can be transitive in one sentence and intransitive in another sentence.

What is the benifit of this type of verb in english ? Is there any difference in the order of its use in English?
@perfect-your-english
@perfect-your-english 3 жыл бұрын
Verbs serve the same function whether they are transitive or intransitive. An important difference is that only a transitive verb can be used in the passive voice. Also, when the verb is transitive, you have to always mention an object. If there is no object, the meaning will be incomplete.

In that sentence the door is the subject. To find out whether it has an object, you should ask 'The door opened what?' Is there an answer? No. Generally speaking, the subject goes before the verb and the object goes after the verb. However, in the sentence 'Suddenly he opened the door', opened is transitive because it has an object - the door.
