5:49 Butter - the channel Willow Talks Books (she/her) has a review on her channel. And if I recall correctly, Jen Campbell really enjoyed reading Idol Burning.

You're right, I feel like I've definitely seen Jen talk about _Idol, Burning_ 😂 Thank you for the review reference, too! Definitely looking them up!

I'm going to read Woodworm by Spanish author Layla Martinez this week. Here's the summary: The house breathes. The house contains bodies and secrets. The house is visited by ghosts, by angels that line the roof like insects, and by saints that burn the bedsheets with their haloes. It was built by a smalltime hustler as a means of controlling his wife, and even after so many years, their daughter and her granddaughter can’t leave. They may be witches or they may just be angry, but when the mysterious disappearance of a young boy draws unwanted attention, the two isolated women, already subjects of public scorn, combine forces with the spirits that haunt them in pursuit of something that resembles justice. Doesn't that sound amazing?

This was a great video, thanks. Most if not all were available to me in the Libby app (yay!) I've joined the waitlist for The Night Guest- sounds intriguing. Happy reading everyone!

1:29 Even if I don't have the spoons to read it now, I feel like I should go out and buy Minor Detail and keep it on my shelf. Thank you for bringing this book, and all your bibliophile thoughts, to our attention.

If you have access to Hoopla audio&ebook app, it is on that system :) I often do not have the spoons to read with my eyes so I get a lot out of those audiobook apps.

Definitely recommend getting a copy if you're able, because it's absolutely worth owning. Always happy to sing Adania Shibli's praises! 🩷

The way you mentioned the new Enriquez short story collection before I could comment it---some of my favorite short stories period and an A+ on the name of the collection yet again. Thanks for lots of other great recommendations--especially as I've been trying to gather Japanese recs to compile some reads for a vacation later this month (and I had forgotten Idol, Burning was translated!) 😊

That's so great! I'm glad I could get _Idol, Burning_ back on your radar 💕 and yes, ABSOLUTELY looking forward to diving into Enríquez's short story collections in the future!

Oh! And can also definitely vouch for Agustina Bazterrica! Tender Is the Flesh is an amazing reflection on how we can dehumanize others if it benefits us and maintains the status quo (see: Palestine), and her other collection Nineteen Claws and a Black Bird is also amazing. I have Las Indignas/The Unworthy on my TBR, so I'm even more excited now!

I've heard great things about _Nineteen Claws_ too! I'm honestly just prepared to love everything she writes once I dive in 😌🖤

have you seen that booktoker who went viral (at least here in Brazil haha) talking about Machado de Assis? he's a classic here, and Posthumous memoirs of Bras Cubas is a banger! it's the corpse who narrates his life! the first paragraph is already so so iconic: "To the worm who first gnawed on the cold flesh of my corpse, I dedicate with fond remembrance these Posthumous Memoirs."

i'd also like to recommend Blue Light Hours, by Bruna Dantas Lobato - it could be considered in translation as she's Brazilian but wrote the novel in English! it follows this mother-daughter relationship through the blue lights of a computer as they only communicate through Skype. she's the phenomenal translator of The Word That Remains, by Stênio Gardel, which won the National Book Award this year!

Minor Detail was a hard but impactful read. I’ve heard of many of these but am really intrigued by The Queue!

Absolutely agree. And I actually finally got a chance to read _The Queue_ shortly after filming this video and it was great!! Definitely recommend.

Can confirm that Enríquez's "Our Share of Night" and "A Sunny Place for Shady People" (for which I was lucky enough to get an ARC) are both masterpieces. All in all this video makes a great case for each book on the list but I wanted to specifically point out how meaningful this dark, queer, beautiful and devastating novel and short story collection are to me.

I love hearing people so excited for her work, so this testimony honestly might be the tipping point to convince me to finally pre-order _A Sunny Place for Shady People_ 👀

I haven’t read as much as I would’ve liked to this month but my favorite so far is from a Catalan author When I Sing, Mountains Dance by Irene Solà. It’s a family saga with lyrical writing and imaginative povs🌻
