Yay, I was right! I made a guess from the thumbnail. I love this book! If I may recommend a book in the same vein that I think actually does what you're looking for, try Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard. There's a sequel with at least one more main series book coming, about a half dozen companion/interlocutary novels and novellas and cameos EVERYWHERE. Short pitch: a career civil servant wages the softest coup.

Yay, 11 years is an amazing achievement! I've just been reading (listening to) "The Wicked Bargain" by Gabe Cole Novoa (YA) and wondered if you'd read it. I'm not quite halfway yet but I'm enjoying it and would love to see you review it. Do you take recommendations?
