What happened to the Palestinians when Israel declared its independence in 1948?
Was it ethnic cleansing? Chaos? Legitimate Jewish self-defense?
Prof. Ilan Pappe is perhaps the most contentious Israeli historian of this question.
Decidedly left-wing in his outlook, Pappe is both an historian, and a social activist. He's perhaps most famous for his book "The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine," in which he lays out a case that the war for the creation of Israel in 1948 is best understood as an ethnic cleansing of the native Palestinian population by primarily European Jews.
Unsurprisingly, Pappe's scholarship is widely derided in Israel. Yet his work is often celebrated by many pro-Palestinian activists in the Middle East and abroad.
Pappe currently teaches history at the University of Exeter, in the UK.
This is part two of my two part interview with Pappe last summer, in Haifa.
For the contrasting academic perspective, please see my interviews with Prof Benny Morris, of Ben-Gurion University, here: goo.gl/sC5BTe

Why don’t the people declare that Britain is being given to the Palestinians to compensate for the ethnic cleansing that happened elsewhere. Let’s see how the people of England would welcome that declaration. Then they should evaluate how that would compare with the Balfour declaration.Ilan Pappe is doing an important job educating people on challenging their views and stands.

Yes, talking about not trusting military accounts, there’s a YT video about female Israeli soldiers, where one relates an incident involving soldiers’ abuse of a Palestinian boy. It had been reported, so a commander had to do an investigation. She was like an assistant to the commander and was told to have the soldiers write their account, which they did and admitted the abuse. She took the report back and was told to go back and tell them to revise it - twice, until the commander was satisfied no blame would be placed on the soldiers/IDF.

This is a brilliant point about abuse survivors and oral testimony (oral history/ethnography/qualitative research/witness statements in courts) ---- even as **therapists** people struggle to disclose traumatic events. Some clients take years to open up. They don't want to. They want therapy and support and human connection, but the last thing they want is to rip the scar tissue out the wound to look inside the wound. The example sounds like hyperbole, but psychologically, that is what we ask of people as therapists, sociologists, ethnographers, and historigraphers.

Part 1 of this interview added context to the history of this conflict that I was not aware of. Probably the best explanation of settler colonialism that I have heard. He lost me in his defence of the victim, as more believable because they have suffered. Also his point that oral memory should be believable. Oral memory typical recounts stories without proper context and omits the part that makes you part of the problem. Unfortunately now I am uncertain of the facts he presented in part 1, which gave me context to historical facts I was already aware of. I was starting to have some sympathy for the Palestinian cause.

Does one have to be an academic to view events logically? When I visit Israel and speak with the Jews, Arabs, Palestinians, and others, I can get either very emotional or very political/ideological opinions. I need to take all of them with a grain of salt. When I read and listen to the experts analysis and interpretation, my understanding gets deeper and insightful. Whatever happens in one's life has reasons and motives. Nothing is spontaneous. All I need is sound stable mind to research the truth. Inquisitive mind for truth seeking.

I do think it is important to know "who" the interviewer is; not necessarily, name and surname and their face, but some of their background, as it will play a part ( big or small depending on their character, professional integrity and self-awareness) on how they conduct the interview. Even more so when approching such a subject matter. My questions did not mean to be accusatory, though they may seem a tad blunt now that I go back to them. I guess following some of your questions to and your interactions/counter-arguments with Ilan Pappé, I sensed that you may indeed be Jewish yourself, as I could perceive a certain "defensiveness"? in them? As a Brit I'm not sure if I agree that Jeremy Corbyn is likely to be the next Prime Minister of the UK, and thus to have even the merest chance of apologising for the Balfour Declaration (which he surely would like to do). As to the show of support he got from the kids at Glastonbury I would say that Corbyn will always be able to appeal to young student types who will be attracted to his socialist message, and he has a very strong support among his followers in the Momentum organisation. But - and it's a big 'but' - he is woefully unpopular among the electorate, as well as the Parliamentary Labour Party. And the working class of Britain - not the same as Glasto-attendees by a long way - seem singularly unimpressed by Corbyn. But I might be wrong, of course, and he might be able to profit from the Brexit debacle sufficiently to squeeze his way in. Good interview, though, even if Mr Pappe's Marxist assumptions leave me a bit 'up in the air'. Thank you Transliminal!

Of course this is two years after your post, and we know Corbyn was assassinated by the Z-ists. But do you think he's not as popular with the electorate because they are much more brainwashed than the students? That would be the case here in the US. Middle aged and older here have been both deeply indoctrinated into the values of corporate capitalism and anti-socialism. thanks.

@@Windband1 No, Corbyn - and his more centrist successor, Keir Starmer - were taken down by an electorate that has never and probably will never embrace socialism, and certainly not as promoted by a politician who has spent 40 years of political life positioning himself on the side of the UK's enemies at every opportunity. That electorate is made up largely of people who go out to work every day and keep the country running and I don't think a few middle-class students without much experience of the real world, and generally can't even be bothered to vote in great numbers, have anything to teach them. Unfortunately for Illan Pappe's little theory, the Labour Party has lost virtually all its traditional support in the last few elections. The Conservatives have actually appropriated some of the economically left-leaning policies but seem to be a lot more patriotic and not obsessed with identity politics as the Labour Party has become over the last 20 years. The left still controls most of the institutions in the UK but politically, it's toast. Cheers

The fact some Jews stayed in Germany or any countries after the WWII is not talked about. Many Jews decided to emigrate to the newly formed Jew State, Israel with the hope of finally having the own country. They didn't care the cost they had to repay for forcefully taking land from the former settlers/inhabitants there. They and the decendants have to pay the toll of criminal conducts. That's historical. The UK, for an example is the typical example. The siciety is innundated with the people from ex-British Empire. Every action begets consequence. That's the real meaning of karma.

Anyone who makes claims without providing evidence and hides the fact that they benefit financially from the perpetration of those claims is putting him/herself in a situation of conflict of interest and this is a criminal offense, it is a shame that some people get away with it and some don't.

This is a poorly constructed comment. It is so vague that any point you are attempting to make is lost. It reads as words strung together with little meaning. So, please, state clearly what you mean! Who is benefiting financially do you mean Pappe? If not whom do you mean? What do you mean? Also where is your supporting links, etc!

@@donnalawson6236 You are right, but I corrected it yesterday. I meant the holocaust survivors who make public statements, you can't promote something if you benefit secretly from it, that's why disclaimers were invented. It's a basic judicial principle but when it comes to the victims of the holocaust or Nazi crimes, evidence is not required and conflicts of interest are not illegal anymore. KZbin deletes comments with links, this will have to do. The Nuremberg Trials: -Article 19. The Tribunal shall not be bound by technical rules of evidence. It shall adopt and apply to the greatest possible extent expeditious and nontechnical procedure, and shall admit any evidence which it deems to be of probative value. -Article 21. The Tribunal shall not require proof of facts of common knowledge but shall take "judicial notice" thereof. It shall also take judicial notice of "official governmental documents" and reports of the United Nations, including the acts and documents of the committees set up in the various allied countries for the investigation of war crimes, and of records and findings of military or other Tribunals of any of the United Nations.
