Long live W&N's Burnt Sienna :) I noticed that people either love or hate it, I do love it myself. Holbein carries a pretty interesting variation of this pigment, called Light Red. Noticeably redder than your usual orange-ish PR101 but still transparent!

I have always had a soft spot for the Winsor Newton Burnt Sienna. It was in my very first 12 color palette and I used that palette for 10 years before I branched out and tried different brands. So, to me a PR 101 is what Burnt Sienna should look like. And Winsor Newton Burnt Sienna is in most of my palettes...I just can't seem to be satisfied with any other Burnt Sienna and always go back to it. Strange how if you use one brand of paint over a long period of time you come to compare all other brands to the colors you love in that brand. Like Perm. Rose PV 19 by Winsor Newton...to me it is the perfect tone and I compare all other Perm Roses to it. One of my other all-time favorite Winsor Newton colors is Smalt PV 55, so unique and beautiful.

Wait, you have a PV55 Smalt? My Smalt is PV15. Is yours an older formulation? I really wish i was into watercolor 10-15 years ago, so many awesome colors were available that are basically extinct today- PO49, PY153, PB33...Etc...I sometimes think if I could go back in time one of the first things Id do is go back ten years and buy a bunch of tubes of the PO49 Quinacridone Gold. Lol.

From what I've read burnt sienna was originally PR102 and the synthetic version is PR101. Seems like Pbr7 burnt sienna is a more recent development in the watercolor pigment world.

I keep both Winsor & Newton and Daniel Smith Burnt Sienna in my palette, as they are so different and grant varied mixing options. My watercolour instructor loved W&N Burnt Sienna and used it all the time, and as a result it was my first version of the colour. I quite like the Daniel Smith Transparent Brown Oxide, and must put that on my wish list. Thank you.

Always enjoy your comparison videos! I have w+n Pr 101 and schminke PR101+Pbk and prefer WN. My other BS are made of PBr7. My favorite of them all is DaVinci’s PBr7 version which sits midway in hue. Not as orange or brown.

I switched out my Holbein Burnt Sienna (PBR7) for DS Trans Red Oxide (PR101) a few years ago now. As predominantly a portrait artist I found that the hue of the Trans Red Oxide was a bit cooler and it mixes cleaner and more natural skin tones.

Daniel Smiths’ Transparent Red Oxide (PR101) is in my palette along with the Transparent Brown Oxide shown here. The Red is almost as granulating as the Brown. I’m a big fan of granulating colours.

I can definitely see why you like them. The granulation in the brown is beautiful ☺️

The WN is lovely. I use both DS Burnt sienna (PBr7) and DS trans red oxide (PR101). Both make lovely grays with ultramarine, but the sienna can settle out on drying to leave a weird pinky brown, so I normally use the PR101. I’m thinking of taking sienna off my palette. Also, DS makes earth friendly trans. red/brown/yellow oxides PBr6) that are also good. Thanks for the comparison.

I’m like others who have commented, WN Burnt Sienna was in my first Cotman set and I got used to that, then I got a pan of their Professional grade (even better). I also have DaVinci Burnt Sienna Deep which is a PR101, quite similar to WN, and of course paints out so nicely. Those two are my standards. Daniel Smith Transparent Red Oxide PR101 is a super pigmented and in your face Burnt Sienna color. I also have Rosa Gallery, which is on the weak side, but still makes some nice mixes. And of course I have DS PBr7 version, because it gets all the hype, especially in the States. But WN is hard to beat.

Liz Steele was a recent convert to TRO from PBr7...it's such a clean mixer. But I admit I like having lots of choices in the earths as they are so interesting to me. The schmincke earths often dry a little neutralised or slightly "dead" . I like the glow in the Winsor version.

This must be my most used color ever, I do a lot of monochromatic studies and illustrations with it and brown ink. Coming from Cotman and later W&N pro, I got attached to their burnt sienna, it's vibrant and transparent, great for glazing. The last 4 years I am using this Schmincke, it is quite nice but sometimes I find myself mixing it with a bit of Quin. Gold to make it more vibrant. I also recently got Rembrandt transparent red oxide to try, but have yet to do a field test.

It's probably my error when swatching out the Schmincke. Too much water and not enough pigment maybe? I don't remember a drying shift like that when I swatched it out in my Schmincke video. I'll have to go back and look.

I`ve tried only Schmincke`s transp. sienna and D.Smith`s transp. red oxide, and I love both. I like D.Smith`s Burnt sienna, too. It`s softer, and not as red as I`ve thought.. maybe they changed the tone.. or I imagined it to be redder, I don`t know.. I`ve heard that it used to be redder. Only other transparent Pr101 I have is Cotman. I like that paint, but I am curious, is it the same hue as the professional one? To me it looks like it is, only less pigmented for sure..(haven`t tried it) Oh, and I like D.S. transp. brown oxide as well. Sometimes I mix in a touch of transp. red oxide, to bring down the yellowness (which I don`t see on screen here, at all)
