Transpennine Express 'Nova' Trains Compilation!

Hello everyone, MT here with the usual trainspotting action. After being introduced into passenger service during the summer period, much of the brand-new units of the ‘Nova’ fleet operated by Transpennie Express has been making their passenger debut and making more of a regular appearance.
These fleet of units involve:
CAF Mk5a Coaches operated by Class 68’s under ‘Nova 3’
CAF Class 397’s under ‘Nova 2’
Hitachi Class 802’s under ‘Nova 1’
So, here is my collection of footage I’ve captured so far of the new units in the TPE livery from last year to most recently. Unfortunately, no shots of the new Class 397’s because most were not in passenger service and/or didn’t get chance to shoot any before the lockdown happened due to COVID-19 while most of the shots I’ve got of the other two fleets were done recently. Transpennine Express would have to be my favorite livery on the system at the current time. I do wonder what a HST would look like painted in it.

True enough. TP Express have the new Nova 1, Nova 2 and Nova 3 trains in service. Northern have the new Class 331 EMU and the Class 195 DMU. Thankfully the pacer trains are being removed from service and replaced by the Class 158 and Class 150 which I know are old trains, but they are like a Rolls-Royce or Bentley compared to the Class 144 Pacer train.

i have to say ..there are three liveries i adoren on trains ..... here are my top 3 .... 3rd ...first trentalia on the pendolinos ....2nd Scotrail and their cleanliness..1st the livery on those 800s on TPE are just sensational

I've seen these trains many times now and still can't understand the logic of them. Why not just have a dual power EMU/Diesel instead - why a loco for 5 coaches? Love to hear the full story... Great video!

Long story cut short if its on a service that only has overhead wires that cover half the route instead of terminating at a particular station it can carry on from there. Plus its more environmental as a plus point.

I agree, I just can't see what advantage a class 68 and 5 coaches + dvt has got that a class 800 hasn't got.. If anything they have the use of Electric traction between Manchester and Liverpool. They really need to plug the silly gaps between Victoria, Leeds and York. It's ridiculous as all the main stations are now electrified. It would surely be quite straightforward "apart from standedge and other tunnels.

Nova 1 is such noisy and a waste of power/fuel to provide traction to a rake of 5 vehicles! Britain's railways system really strugles to find suitable and modern traction to their loco hauled trains still serving passengers on mainline services mainly capable fot freight and charter services where the availability is much wider. Shame class 57s and HSTs are ageing their purposes, or else they could be the solution for trans Pennine Express, chiltern Mainline and Transport for Wales for instance. They run on the Scarborough-York Scarborough-Manchester airport and Manchester Piccadilly I believe

Wonder why the Nova 1 seen at 4:05 was departing from Leeds on diesel power? I thought the they have access to the wires up until Holbeck East Junction?

They go from York to Manchester Victoria on diesel then man vic to Liverpool lime Street and York to Newcastle/Edinburgh

Liam's Railway Photography it was most likely a mileage accumulation run. They usually do Carlisle to Bletchley via the WCML, like you I was surprised that they actually put it on the destination indicator.

I wouldn't want there to be, but does anyone know why these trains don't have Warning Yellow on the front? It seems like a characteristically British practice in the post-steam era

Trains that have headlamps rated above a new visibility standard in 2016 are not required to have Warning Yellow on their leading components as the headlamps are enough for visual awareness of said train. Numerous operating companies have chosen to maintain application of yellow, perhaps for consistency or tradition.
