What I just realized is that it's 1,000+ FAMILIES, not people The average size of a family is about 3.13 people in the US, so, there were approximately ~4,000 people killed on a single mission where they only encountered like 2 hostile ships

The whole "transporting thousands of families" thing raises an interesting question: Why in the hell is a vessel intended for patrols, combat and uncharted space exploration designed to house thousands upon thousands of untrained, unarmed civilians who can't help in the slightest during emergencies/combat? It's not like they can or will provide any aid, and all the resources and facilities needed to support them could be better used on vital functions for the ship and actual crew. Not to mention, you could either make the ship much smaller without the extra civilian living spaces, but you could also make it just as big while simply using the space for better shielding/weapons/ammo. It's like the Federation thought they could use the civilians as a means to convince other factions to not blow up the ship for moral/honor reasons, completely forgetting that almost every other faction not only has no issues vaporizing thousands of civilians who happen to be on the ship they're blowing up, but would probably treat the extra casualties like bonus multipliers on their kill counts.

They were never intended to be military. The families are part of the crew, it's for people who don't want to be literal thousands of light years away from their family. You see a drastic change during the dominion war and the federation ships get smaller and more militaristic.
