You beat me to it. Great idea. Need a small tractor too. Could also bury small trees/sticks/slats horizontally across the muddiest parts of the hill. Couple of feet apart, should provide for some traction and a way to hold gravel on the steep muddiest parts. It's a temp fix but it would help.

As a retired contractor I've had your issues...before you put rock down, I stopped using fabric. If walked on the rocks, on top and below, eventually poke holes allowing weeds. Also with fabric down it restricts ones ability to bury lighting wires...solar lights suck...planting...I understand the circumstances...trust me. Also, with your driveway...if you don't put in containment edging you will lose much of your rock. Use a 3/4 minus. If it's select, meaning all one size, it won't lock together well. The use of a vibrating tamper on top. Try to clear all big rocks and debris then use a preemergent to kill weeds and help for weed control. You will have to control organics from collecting on the drive. If not, it becomes mulch, then dirt and your back to square one.

Don't use gravel. It will sink into the mud. Use road base. This has the ability to compress hard and not sink. The 1 lane road slopes down to my picnic pavilion. It is about 200' long. I used 4 24 ton loads and spread it with my tractor. It is about 4" deep compressed by running my 8500 lb tractor over it for several hours.

@@bearcingetorix6326i never understood this whole need a 4wd thing that people do recently, if you saw where people drove ans what they towed with 2wd's that had far less hp in the 60's and 70's you'd be amazed, my mum used to drive her Morris 1100 on Frazer island (there are no sealed roads on Frazer island even now, just beach or bush tracks), back then if you got bogged in the sand people just gathered some sticks and leaves to give you some traction and pushed the car. When we built our last house, the builder put down heavy black fabric, then grey stones, the size of my hand. Later when I defined the driveway area, I found roadway fabric at a stone company. Next, we topped it all off with 57 stone. That is a mix of size 5 and 7 stone because they fit together better. The fabric keeps the stones from sinking into the ground. We lived there 12 years and never needed to add stone. The fabric definitely saved money in the long run. Your landscaping looks great. The space in the corner of your block fence and wooden fence is screaming for a bush. Love you guys. We are retired and live in Central Florida.

You need a binder in the stone you order for the roadbase. The typical road base material used in the PR & Caribbean region is a 1 1/2″ -3/4″ Limestone base rock & shell moro with limestone/shell sand/gravel binder. The material compacts in very well and dries up into a nice hard roadbase. Centerline crown your roadway for drainage to each shoulder. Overtime you just add where base settles, create ponding or ruts from driving....and eventually you can top with a finer stone. In future, you should get rid of ALL weeds and treat soil with post-emergent herbicide before placing fabric & stone.....weeds seed will just grow thru otherwise. And once every spring you need to reapply a pre-emergent herbicide to keep new weed seeds from growing in your stone.

Pour a parking pad and pad for your RV while you're at it. Gravel will just eventually sink and there is no end to it no matter how many times you add more gravel. I built a 2000W off-grid solar system 3 years ago and use it almost every day to run a big A/C in our lanai. This week I purchased a 2400W pure sine-wave inverter/ solar battery. I tried a smaller unit from Ecoflow, but it had problems, and Ecoflow technical service sucked so I returned it and got this bigger, better unit from Anker with the expansion battery. I already have eight solar panels. With a couple of solar panels and this Anker Solix 2000 767 solar battery, you could easily have the power to run your RV. I highly recommend this unit. Many vloggers that we watch, doing the kind of stuff you two are doing, were apparently given that unit for free to promote its sale. You should ask Anker about that.

The peastone that you received would not be the best for a driveway, Mat is correct, is would be like putting a truckload of marbles down to try to drive over.

Guys, you should always put in your larger plant material in first then lay your landscape mat down. When I say larger plant material I am referring to perennial not annuals as in flowers. When you lay down the mat place it right over the plants and then go back and cut an X in the mat over the center of each plant now push that down over the plant and fold the edges under around the base of your plant material. Now go and put in your stone, bark or what ever mulch you are using down.

Matt, is there a gravel pit close by that you can order 10-ton loads to be delivered to your home site? If so order some 3- minus rock to fill the tire track ruts in with. That will work down into the soil to give a good base. A two-track base, so the tires have some traction.

I am blown away, kids, by your work ethic. You are doing such a fantastic job of transforming that jungle, into a beautiful homestead. Thinking of the old saying, "you are making a silk purse out of a sow's ear". I look forward every week to your next challenge.

Wow, guys! Tough times. I'm surprised that you moved the RV down before your driveway was done. As a long term fan of yours I'm shocked that you are doing the wall, the fence and the landscaping, all finishing projects, before you build your house.

Love that adaptability. It should keep ya'll going long enough to learn whatever you need to know. I also enjoyed watching Matt supervise the raking...all the while understanding how hard he works and having a personal understanding of what it's like working that hard in heat and humidity. Keep up the good work you two.

Street tires will not do the job of climbing the hill in the rainy season. What might help are some good snow tires. And plant some stout trees, spaced so you can use the winch you will soon buy to pull you up the hill. The front looks great. And don't wear yourselfers out.

It’s called “ more stock”, and then “ really stock” and finally “ really more stuck”. Next expense, traction tires and “slow, as she goes. ‘ good move with air removal. Water goes down hill, the upper part of the hill was dryer.

You got hit with Murphy's law........"Anything that can go wrong will go wrong." In some formulations, it is extended to "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and at the worst possible time." You might want to talk to someone experienced in your driveway need. I'm afraid gravel is going to sink into the mud and disappear. However, it looks lovely.

You've spent enough on gate materials, gravel for mud holes, and two months of goat feed to have bought a nearly new catamaran. I guess there could possibly be mosquitos in New Zealand, but they're probably not nearly as big and plentiful as those in a rain forest. Enjoy the goats, chickens and the herd of cats, everyone needs a pet.

Matt, those broken pieces of concrete is ideal to fix the bad spots on the downhill drive way. When you drive over them they will press into the mud.

FYI - the type of rock you put down on your landscape is important. Natural gravel contains a preponderance of quartz. Four inches deep prevents 95% of weed growth from seeds. If you spread crushed stone that’s a calcium base (limestone or dolomite) weeds will grow in it. Because it is only one color, it’s probably crushed stone. A couple of inches of natural gravel on top will add all kinds of color while retarding weed growth. Get larger gravel and pretty accent stone and boulders to bring out the colors that you want. If you want ideas, I can email pictures. Although you may not understand what I am telling you, the difference in upkeep of your landscape is like day and night. Drop of hydrochloric acid on your stone will tell you if it’s limestone based. It will bubble if it’s limestone based.

Matt if there's any construction going on close to you see if there's a pile of scrap sheetrock pieces you can haul off. Put it over the gravel you put down in layers, it will make a mess but work in to it like lime & set up like concrete in time. It's a cheap solution & will help keep your gravel & hard work from washing down the hill. Good luck,I love your show!!!

Front end looks great. The drive way will be another episode. But lesson to be learned? Your supplier had to much of this gravel on hand and he stuck it to you. Obviously, either find another supplier, or stick it to him the next time.
