I did a fence like yours. Did not last long. Water entered the wood from the top and made each board a little wider. Boards moved and broke all the screws. Had to completely redo it to give the boards more space to move and cover the top. I hope you have a better result. Love you guys!

These fences won’t last, no spacing between boards for expansion and screwing from the back instead of on the face of the boards.

I think it might be a problem to have all the fence planks butted together with no gap. It might be better to have all the main planks separated by almost a full plank and that gap covered by an outer plank. This way the wood can swell and shrink without damaging the fasteners. Everyone has an opinion, but not all of them are wrong.
@timothywolleck7628
@timothywolleck7628 7 ай бұрын
Your opinion is not wrong. Several other people had similar comments in the previous fence build video. Obviously they are choosing form over function but they had a clean simple look that they were going for.

Oh, he is definitely not afraid of hard work, on the other hand he tends to shoot from the hip on some of the projects and not using the right materials and listening to what's being said over and over by so many different people. I know your frugale, and that's okay. However, it's interfering with some of your choices. The show is great and will keep watching. I just hate seeing people step over dollars to save quarters. 😂

@@mikek8377, I can’t disagree with you on questionable choices. I’m still trying to figure out why they moved their camper and everything they own from a hilltop to a flood plain. But, he works like a beast. I get tired just watching his videos. I do think he made much better choices and decisions on the boat rehab project.

Two suggestions: 1. Get a deadman for your front fence. This is is where you bury a short post down perpendicular to the front fence with an angled support (runner) that transfers the pressure and energy put on the front top down to the ground behind the fence. You might be able to accomplish this with your side fence but still you want the energy to transfer through the angled support ~ 6’ down to ~ 1’ 2. If you still have concrete floor available to you, you will be glad in the long run that you move it there for purposes of reducing loss and easier retrieval. If that doesn’t appeal to you, spread it out so that it visually looks fine but the extra depth can be a source of minor stone needs (faux storage). Good job on the work today….your phrase is a good one but needs to be offered on an exclusive basis only. “Smart people need not apply” could be a tag line in small print. The truth in your phrase isn’t that hard workers need to be stupid or dumb (strong back, weak mind) but that first timers and DIY newbs need to learn the best way. Everyone else gets to pay retail. For too many the “work smarter” is an excuse to do nothing or an explanation for why they stopped. There’s gold in these words if you want to mine and mold it for your merch ….plant your stake and claim it. Incidentally….you were working smarter (without any instruction) when you tipped your wheelbarrow over to get volume material with less calories burned. That is what working harder teaches….THAT ain’t in no books. Proof that: life is the best teacher of all.

This might sound el stupido, but I’d love to see an episode or two of the two of you and your daily activities in and around the trailer ! A nice walk thru of the inside and how both of you live “at home “. What is the ultimate goal ? Build a permanent “house” and make this your permanent place of living, etc. ? I apologize if you have made this clear previously but I can’t seem to find the video which explains all of this. Love watching you two in what I consider one of the most interesting channels on KZbin ! Thanks for sharing ! Big Rick 👍

Don't worry about the fence it's just going to blow over anyway. You should put some 45° - 4x4x10' braces on back side. No one will see them. DEFINITELY BRACE it if a hurricane comes
@jeremylynn8631
@jeremylynn8631 7 ай бұрын
that might work if they remove every other panel too when the hurricane comes. but with sustained winds for hours that fence is a gonner if anything over a Cat 1 passes directly over them. but hey if they make it ten years before that happens then so be it. but it would suck if that happened later this year! guess that's what good insurance is for, hopefully that's included in their insurance policy and not just the dwelling, because that would be a hit to gut to completely lose that without the finances to rebuild it! I wonder if they have day laborers @ their Home Depot like we do in the states 🤔🙆🤣
@enmodo
@enmodo 7 ай бұрын
I very much doubt there's any insurance at play here. If it happens if they are lucky they can find the pieces and drag them back home to rebuild. But yes, any wind strong enough to blow a wooden house apart will make short work of this. It's basically an inevitability, just a question of when and how much to rebuild. But you could say the same about a lot of unreinforced houses in earthquake zones.

Funny thing about "Work harder not smarter" is the legendary Mike Rowe the host from Dirty Jobs went to Congress once I believe, or a tour of some kind where his motto was "Work harder not smarter" Specifically he was sort of lobbying for kids to not be afraid of not going to college because there is a need for highly skilled trade jobs and whatnot. Love the motto

Matt and Ki😢rsten, love you both. On the fence. The cross pieces are called rails. And the vertical ones are pickets. You should never put the pickets on the ground. Put one on the ground and set them on it. Then just slide it along. The moisture will wick up from the ground every time it rains and gets wet. Kinda late now. You could cut the top in like 4' long and 4" higher and lower along the top too. That would look nice. Just a thought. But for next time. Great video and love the music. You two are so amazing together. Im so happy for you both, living the dream! Can't wait to see what's next! Be safe! Love n hugs, Myk

Maybe consider calculating the total drop of the fence from the masonry end to the other end of the fence, then divide that number by 3 or 4, and stagger even length cuts along the top of the fence by the calculated amount to make a staggered profile instead of a sweeping arch cut from one end to the other. Not sure if that makes sense, but aesthetically I think it looks better. Look forward to the vids!
