Hi ! I know that there are always tons of comments below your videos, but I would like you to reply to that! I am Italian, I live in Italy and I have heard that you came here to Europe. If you ever come back, here in the north, ther's a place that would be perfect for your "beyond the dark" series. The asylum of Mombello. I’m glad you ran into the right kind of kind construction workers and weren’t immediately kicked off of the island. I think they knew you weren’t there to harm or destroy anything on the property or harm anyone. They were nice enough to give you a personal tour and were knowledgeable and excited about the history there as well which is great. I’m glad you guys didn’t get the chainsaw massacre treatment and vanish forever! Thanks for sharing it’s always interesting if you get a chance let alone a personal tour of an island from the 1600s that has lots of history probably both good and bad

They did not bury the canons. The Canons, they are so heavy, they actually sink in the dirt. I know bcz we hv some Forts over here with same canons. One even bigger then the one shown. As a child all was up above ground and later in years i went with my kids and some were almost completely under the dirt. Some years ago they dug em back up, restored and painted. The Forts were made by the Dutch and Brits, back then here to protect the plantations. And yeah the walls are Super thick as defence posts. Especially the munition room. Check Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, Suriname. It's a beautifull park now. Ooh it was used later as a prison too. When i was a kid like 9 years of age, 40 years ago, it was still used as a prison.

I think Angel Island, next to Alcatraz is closer akin to Drake's island. Alcatraz was a mammoth fort and military prison originally, Angel Island was fortified but spread out like Drake's and also was a plague hospital among many other functions. For a brief time California even stored tons of PCB containing electric transformers, because they had no clue what to do with them.

The guns that you see were probably 7-inch Armstrong rifled breechloading guns (1860-70). Which were probably replaced with 9-inch rifled muzzle loaders in 1872 till 1890. Then the larger cannons on the rails still will be 9-inch rifled muzzle loaders which will have been used in 1893 onwards towards WW1. The 9 inch guns took a team of 9 men to load and fire. These guns fired projectiles weighing 256 pounds (116 kg). They were absolute warship killers. The bunker itself will have probably been built around 1850 so not anywhere near the 1600's and a little later than the Napolionic period. There are tonnes of these ace bunkers along the UK's coastline and they were mainly used to guard the coast from enemy warships. The most famous one being The Old Battery on the Isle Of Wight above the Needle stacks. Most of them are now privately owned by people living on them, or companies having hotels like this one in the video. Still very very cool intricate and interesting buildings. Definitely make the trip to the Isle of Wight one sometime Josh as theres tonnes of abandoned ones near there! :)

26:46 - That ring is 360 degrees, they would record the bearing, elevation and charge of each shot, noting where it landed and would adjust as neccesary to dial in the shot. They could also gauge the shot using a gunnery table - something the first computers were used to calculate. Some later guns have mechanical computers that could indicate the desired range based on the position. 40mm bofors guns often had something similar attached.

Drake's Island is a privately owned island in Plymouth Sound. The first recorded name for the island was in 1135, when it was referred to as St Michael's after the chapel erected on it. The chapel was rededicated to St Nicholas and the island adopted the same name. From the latter part of the 16th century the island was occasionally referred to as Drake's Island after Sir Francis Drake. Ii is only in about the last 100 years that this name has slipped into disuse and the name Drake's Island has been adopted. In 1583 Drake was made governor of the island. From 1549 the island began to be fortified as a defense against the French and Spanish, with barracks for 300 men being built on the island in the late 16th century. The 1859 Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom recommended a huge program of new fortifications to defend Plymouth. On Drake's Island, the existing battery at the center of the island was to be replaced by five 12-inch muzzle loading guns in open emplacements. A new battery was to be built on the southwestern end, of 21 9-inch guns in an arc of stone casemates with iron shields. The work was not complete in 1880. Six 12-pounder quick firing guns were added in 1897 and three 6-inch guns became the main armament in 1901; the original muzzle loaders were dumped under a pile of earth. Finally, in 1942, a modern twin 6-pounder gun was installed. Following World War II Drake's Island remained under the administration of the War Office, which, despite having announced in 1956 that it was no longer needed for defense purposes, did not finally vacate the island until 1963, when Plymouth City Council obtained a lease from the Crown with the aim of establishing a youth adventure training center there. It was opened in 1964, the year in which a mains water supply finally reached the island. Drake's Island Adventure Centre, under the custody of the Mayflower Centre Trust, operated until 31 March 1989, when the Mayflower Trust surrendered their lease to the Crown and sold off the boats and sports equipment. In 1995, Dan McCauley purchased Drake's Island with the intention of turning it into a hotel complex. In 2003, Plymouth City Council turned down a planning application from McCauley to build a hotel and leisure complex complete with helipad. In May 2005 the island attracted British media attention when one of the empty buildings on the island was squatted by a group of anti-nuclear protestors, Trident Ploughshares. In October 2018, the island was put up for sale and was purchased by Morgan Phillips, who plans to open the island to the public with a museum and heritage center. It was due to open for a one-off tour by 105 visitors on 15 March 2020 but this was cancelled due to COVID 19.
