I snagged a nice Craftsman off a tree lawn last Fall, had a Hinda GCV160 engine. I think the people were moving or went electric. Took it home and had it running in 15 minutes. Cleaned it up and gave it a full service. Self propel is a bit weak but the engine runs great. ALWAYS starts on the first pull.

I picked up a Brigg lawnmower put out for the garbage. 1 tire was missing and the other 3 were wobbly. I replaced them.I re-ringed it. The oil NEVER was changed because he didn't have that tool. The engine brake cable was gone. I replaced it. The blade was bent under at 1 side. It runs GREAT!! It's a 4 H.P. It has 90 lbs. compression. The throttle springs were gone, I replaced them. It wouldn't fast idle. Now it runs GREAT!! If the diaphragm leaks, it can flood and cause the engine to bind. I have 2 other mowers from garbage. When you know about lawn mowers, you can fix them!

There is a apparatus out there that you can get which is specifically for fixing bent crank shafts on these little vertical shaft engines. I use a similar method that involves a long pipe and securing the engine. No shock to the crank with a sledge, and they're perfectly fine after so long as you replace the crank seal and the lower case isn't cracked anywhere. In fact, I found a Husqvarna 4 wheel drive on Craigslist for $40 that was used once then the guy hit something and bent the crank. Straitened it out and new owner is my neighbor and has been using it for three years with no adverse effects from the bent crank. TarylFixesAll has one of those crank straitening machines he shows in one of his videos. Pretty slick! Great little series on the 4 trash picked mowers my good Friend! Cheers!! Sean~

I have switched over to the Yard Machines unit the gave me but now that one dropped a wheel bracket and the wheel was dragging across the lawn the other day... nothing that a few zip ties couldn't repair.

Yes, you are correct it was the 4th one. And some people don't maintain their mowers. The filter in that one lawn mower was really dirty. One of my neighbors never changes the oil, spark plug, or air filter on hi mower. I told him that's a shame because he is shortening the life of it considerably.

I just knew that little briggs would run. I've had the same mower as that one for 19 years. Bought it from Walmart in 1999 for $100.00 and the only things I've had to replace on it in 19 years are the primer bulb and the diaphragm gasket. Still starts on the first pull and I still use it every year even though the deck is about rusted through. The kill switch handle came off years ago so I just kill it the old fashioned way with a screwdriver grounding out the spark plug. Wait, I told a lie. I have also replaced the wheels 3 times after them falling apart on me. The third time I replaced them with metal wheels with bearings so I'm betting those will be the last replacement wheels I put on it, lol.

There is a certain satisfaction, when one finds some others discarded flotsam and jetsam of life, fixable. It is possibly the never say die spirit of yesteryear like those who went through the great depression. Their is something honorable in returning a piece of machinery to life, especially if you can pass it on to someone less fortunate than yourself. My biggest problem is knowing when to stop. Throwing money at little motors that have given up the will to live is a waste of time. These days I just ask myself "what would Bruce do". ;-) Having said that with the encouragement of your videos I now have a very good generator and small pump that cost me nothing. As an old New York friend [I'll let you imagine the heavy accent] who moved to Australia once said to me "ya can't beat free!".

Bruce on that Craftsman Platinum. Camshaft position isn't going to change the magnet position to where the piston is at TDC. The last lawnmower was a Stanley 6.0! Should there be any concern as to when you pulled the starter rope the lawnmower starts to shake! Does that mean there could be a unbalanced blade? Or is it because the wheels were loose or is it just an old lawnmower!

What does the position of the fly wheel make a difference to the opening of the valves. That all depends on the camshaft and cam timing.
@BrucesShop7 жыл бұрын
The flywheel key keeps the flywheel at a specific position so the spark generated by the coil is at the right time. If you hit something hard the key shears off and the spark is at the wrong time in the cycle. I hope I helped???
@timpike16167 жыл бұрын
If you’re thinking the valve are out of timing it wouldn’t have anything to do with the spark plug or flywheel. The cam shaft controls the valves no matter if the spark is out of timing or not. Probably one of the cheep plastic gears cam that they use now they like to break!

Just like you said there's a reason the mowers ended up in the trash. I don't have a lot of spare used parts so new parts usually put the cost of a used mower over the top. Trash mowers don't go to the curb much anymore due to town environmental rules. Folks want to sell old non running mowers for far more than there worth.
@BrucesShop7 жыл бұрын

@BrucesShop7 жыл бұрын
I have many from older mowers that had other issues. If replacing them I would do so if they are broken or impeding the rolling of the mower.
@andrewkolanowski10207 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bruce! I've just started working on mowers for the past year or so. And only really work on them during the summer. I'll buy the replacements, until my stockpile of "spare parts" builds up.
@billwrench66627 жыл бұрын
I usually take a beer can or aluminum and about 1/2 way down the can I cut it into.. I measure inside the the wheel hub from side to side. Then I cut myself a strip around the can. You can put a little grease on the axle and aluminum strip. Put or wind the strip on to the axle. You MAY need to cut off just a little of the strip to make it fit inside the hub. This works fine for me and is a cheap fix if you can't find the bushings. Mine usually mine last a couple of years and it doesn't wear the axle out..

Could it be the wrong flywheel for that engine? (The first one). I mean... Who knows what has been done to that engine. A cam out of timing is probably the culprit, but the wrong flywheel is a possibility. I look forward to the teardown of that engine if you do it (please do!)
@BrucesShop7 жыл бұрын
I do a tear down and you are right. The blade adaptor key was sheared doff too. Vid to come.
@NotME5357 жыл бұрын
Wow. They must have hit something really hard and heavy or a sidewalk, cement whatever to do that kind of damage. I have never seen a broken key in the blade, but the blade adaptors all stripped I have. It must have put up a fight, that engine is way way off timing (If it is original flywheel) the camshaft teeth must be quite damaged too. So must the crank ones. You are lucky it didn't shoot flames through the intake, I have seen it before, on a car engine that was no assembled quite right, and camshaft was off. Scary stuff is like a huge lighter in you face!

The Honda hrr21 probably does not have a bad tranny. Probably the clutch cable is out of adjustment. Honda self propelled lawnmowers are common to have problems when pulled to the rear if the cable is out of adjustment. You can change the oil in the transmission by popping off its top cover and refilling it, completely, with 10W-30 synthetic motor oil. I have found the Honda lawnmower oil works best. I do not like the design of the drive system on Honda lawnmowers. Any drive system that is completely under the deck is prone to drive problems.

What was the second mower?
@BrucesShop6 жыл бұрын
The second one was the red Briggs.
@attorneyreel11816 жыл бұрын
Much easier to change oil by just tipping mower and letting old oil run out filler hole into a scrap plastic bottle.
@BrucesShop6 жыл бұрын
I understand but with the Honda's as well as some Briggs about 50ml (1/8 of a cup) Doesn't drip out. If they have a bottom drain i use it. Thanks

I seen people pulling their arm off trying to start a mower after hitting the blade and finally its seen at the curb for scrap. LOL The city won't take a mower as garbage , the scrap guys pick them up fast. A lot have gone to cordless electric out here and few gas motors left at the curb these days.
@BrucesShop7 жыл бұрын
The cordless electrics just don't have the run time out here with our bigger yards.

Do I see you squirting oil in the carburetor? Why are you squirting oil in the carburetor?
@BrucesShop7 жыл бұрын
I should explain every time time i use it. I use a mix of gas and a bit of oil for priming engines. I put it in an oil can
@scottfirman6 жыл бұрын
Bruce Pender I was wondering the same thing, but figured it out. I also add a bit of oil to the gas on any mower sitting a long time. It lubricates the cylinder that has been sitting for a long time

People are almost giving away $400 lawn mowers this year. I have been picking up cheaper than dirt priced mowers this year, but then selling them for asking price. most of them dont run so that tells me people are just dumping their crap mowers and buying new ones rather than fixing them.
@BrucesShop6 жыл бұрын
We had that and then our economy crashed and now there is nothing to find.
@francoannoni62527 жыл бұрын
Couldn't you just disconnect the transmission on that Honda and use it as a push mower? I know you can do that on some mowers. But then who would buy it right.
@BrucesShop7 жыл бұрын
That thing was so heavy. You have no idea. Hernia city.
@MidwestMotoRider7 жыл бұрын
Its pretty bad around here also most of the mowers are put out to the curb in pieces and not worth picking any more. But hey you have 1 runner and 3 parts donation machines.

I hate when people throw out busted stuff! It's so annoying. Why can't everyone put good stuff out to the curb and stop waisting our time? I think it's rude and selfish! lol! Now you gotta store it, strip it, or get rid of it...or worse yet, fix it!!! I would take it back and complain. ;)
@BrucesShop7 жыл бұрын
Well at least i got the parts from these ones eh!!
@jonmyers80467 жыл бұрын
Yea I guess, but that's still almost like work. Yuck who wants that? lol! Guess I'm spoiled. I grew up in an area where rich people threw stuff like that out cause they were lazy and could just pay somebody to mow their lawn for them. It's amazing what they would give me or put at the curb. Stuff that needed gas and an oil change and it was good to go. I miss those days lol.
