Saved from the grave, Dan. Proper modelling. Top job. In particularly I liked your fix to transform the decals. It really does make a huge difference. It was almost certainly caused by being dropped. Reminded me of that Austerity 2-8-0 that OOBill fixed for me.

Nice repair :) Though it concerns me getting a new Mallard model if Hornby hasn't got spares ready for replacement. My Hogwarts Castle went through a complete replacement when its motor died and was unreplaceable

I have noticed when looking for spare motors and spares for when I am doing repairs... look outside of the box so to speak...also from my experience at running a hobby shop here in Melbourne Australia many years ago. I used to buy motors and spares online from electronic suppliers such as Aliexpress and similar places, they are much cheaper and more readily available instead of looking for the model train item and as you would know there is a considerable mark up also included from a hobby shops.

It would be nice to see Mallard working again but sadly it’s never going to happen, it did come back during 1988 for its 50th anniversary but only for a short time, the most common reason that I have heard is the railway museum want to keep her in as original condition as possible, if it was to run again it would need a lot of work doing including the addition of many systems to allow it to run on the Rail network therefore taking away the originality, another reason I have heard and I will admit that I’m not sure if it’s 100% true the locomotive has had all its insides taken out and was filled with concrete, whether that’s true or not as I say I’m not sure.

The idea that the plain lettering and numbering makes the model cheaper is bollocks for someone in China had to print those numbers and letters so why not print the proper ones instead of the "plain Jane" ones to give the illusion it's cheaper with them.
