I quite like the thumping noise , it adds to the authenticity. The real life counterparts didn't exactly run silently 😁.

I was expecting this to be a split chassis model. I must keep an eye open for one of these in that lovely LNER livery. Martin. (Thailand)

A few months ago I got the Hornby version for 30£ in a lot with an LMS horse box and a Class 87. The Hornby model has the new motor, but not DCC ready yet. Took me a while to clean it but it worked and I hard-wired a space DCC decoder to it. It is a nice model, mine has sprung buffers. This model I believe was an Airfix model, but never released as such. Only under Mainline. The motor is absolutely excellent. I have the Airfix Prairie and the 14xx they run much better than any old locomotive from the same era I think. Great servicing video as usual really like it 👍

Well done Dan, hopefully we get an update on thumper

The thumping may well be an axle, not split but but wear and tear. Many moons ago I remember someone saying that either the engines could "square off" an axle because they don't run in bearings, or the square slots wore in one place and the axle would "bounce" in the slot.

Have two of these engines both brilliant runners one that's very same engine as this one and the other one being 4744 from the railway children that pulled the scots flyer 😊😊😊😊

Sounds a little like the motor spindle might be bent? If you listen carefully, it sounds like a slow-fast repetition. Great video as usual Dan 👍🏻

Very informative. Regarding the thumping, I have a China-built Hornby Coronation that has done that since new. I wondered if mine has a split gear but it runs fine. I look forward to any news you have on why this N2 thumps.

I have two of these, one green, one black, they both had gunk on the worm gear, after a good service they run very well

Probably unrelated, but the thump seems to occur when the rods on the RH side reach the top of travel.

My hornby N2 did the same . Thumbing like yours dose. I sold it on .

The N2 model was originally a Airfix tooling that they never released due to bankruptcy Mainline brought the tooling. I did have a Mainline N2 it was a very noisy runner.
@Rob1972Gem15 күн бұрын
The mainline N2 is the old airfix model casting motor running gear the whole lot it’s just the old airfix model in fact the early Hornby model was exactly the same except Hornby altered the chassis and fitted a different type of motor

As for the thumping Dan you could always pass it off as men working on the house. "I say can you blokes keep it down a bit" then the locos goes round the other side of the layout and you can say "oh they're over there now". I also like how you used your wife's make up brush to dust off the model. A lovely model for it's age Dan and now with new oil and grease should see it working for quite a few years before you need to touch it again. The old grease didn't remind me of poop but ear wax.
