Playing a Manticore Pilot isn't for everyone, but as I'm playing a penal colonist that now is a pirate, it is the perfect mecha. They'll never catch her alive. Also is hilarious to see the reaction of other players, every time I make an attack that also makes me some damage.

Manticore features one of the absolute silliest weapon/talent synergies in the game imo. Double catalyst pistols and Gunslinger III in a target-rich environment mean you can potentially proc I Kill With My Heart twice in a single quick action if you roll well-slap that shit on a tuned-up Tortuga with some HA kit and CQB support and you can burn down the world.

DM'S GUIDE TO HORUS MECHS: MANTICORE As in real mythology, D&D's manticore is a wacked-out-looking monster with a man's head, a lion's body, and a tail that fires spikes. One difference that D&D manticores have is that they have the wings of dragons as well in most cases, making them quite dangerous as any flying enemy is. They are basically covered with spikes and other pointy bits, so getting close to them is a bad idea. One thing that's NOT different, though, and you might not expect this, is that manticores speak Common. The original manticore was of Persian origin and was very similar to the Egyptian sphinx, the only difference being that it usually skipped the riddle portion to go straight to the kill-and-eat-people portion (its name literally derives from "man eater"). The manticore's voice is usually described as "like a trumpet", which is to say loud and arresting, and likely used for little purpose except to surprise, trick, and then mock you. D&D manticores are quite dangerous but not ridiculously so, and often get picked for use as boss encounters for low-level parties as they can handle multiple people with all their attacks without being too instantly deadly.

2:15 too bad it's clarified: a clone may be an almost flawless copy, but it is still not a revived consciouness of the killed pilot. Not that important in gameplay, but rather important philosophically

That seems pretty cool, actually. Someone who thinks death won't matter, then gets "revived," notices how they lost a part of themselves with this cloning and then is suddenly way more scared of death since they now know the cost of resurrection.

@@heyfell4301 there is a very good adventure path for Lancer: Field Guide to Suldan, which features this as a plot point. short version: a real awful piece of shit couped his way to being in charge of a world, with the help of the nice lady who told him "hey I can make you immortal." she knew she was lying. he didn't. Julian Ambrose Khan, First of His Name, Twenty-Sixth Of His Clone Lineage, had gone a little weird towards the end, and as a result got overthrown by a popular rebellion. Julian Ambrose Khan, First Of His Name, Twenty-Seventh Of His Clone Lineage, would very much like his throne back please, and still has the keys to... most of his superweapons. the one that does not pick up the phone when he calls anymore is probably not worth worrying about

The point of the Manticore is to remind people that tabletop RPGs aren't just about winning, they're about telling a story. Sometimes tragedy and loss makes for a better story than "Huzzah, everybody lives!" Or maybe you just want to run your Lancer pilot as a drugged-up adrenaline junkie who deliberately pumps HORUS propaganda directly into his brain and literally rolls a die before each fight to decide if this fight is "The Big One", with his inevitable replacement being an estranged sibling trying to figure out WTF went wrong to make him that way.

This mech shows a major flaw with the lancer setting, when you remove failure states of a setting as death, federation dissolving of plausible possibly of failure of danger, the fact that you can't have family still alive if they haven't jumped(time difference makes you generations older) the mechs can be 3D printed, like nothing matter so fuck it anyway no sacrifices matters nothing can fail... Big Reason I have never seen lancer ran 100% in the book.
@11dragonkid113 жыл бұрын
You do know that's a joke and that you really do die when you get killed right? The clone thing just let you continue your character with further complication because your existence might very much be illegal. Otherwise you just make another character in the same license level.
@nuclearattackwombat83903 жыл бұрын
I agree that removing the failure states in an RPG can really trivialize things - it's a big reason why I prefer GMs who ban the various Resurrection spells in D&D and Pathfinder. That being said, death in Lancer is very much a failure state. Your character dies. Period. They are *gone*. You can get a new character with mental and/or physical trauma and a sorta-working imprint of the old character's skills and personality, but that's it. Having everything 3D printable means that losing your *stuff* doesn't matter as much - unless it happens mid-mission when there's still another two scenes to go. I think the book even suggests putting the players into dire straits where they don't have easy access to a military grade printer and have to get creative with their repair and resupply.
