Correction: Star Wars was not released as episode 4. They didn’t start numbering the episodes until Empire Strikes Back which was only called episode 5 in the title crawl. However, Lucas always intended to make Star Wars into this huge story and A New Hope was always supposed to be episode 4, it was just not released as such for obvious reasons.

1:48:09 Here Connor is wrong. People don't die if they are not within a certain radius of a major river. The reason Mesopotamia, alongside Ancient Egypt, The Indus Valley civilization and the ancient Chinese Yellow River civilization were so remarkable is because they were the first to figure out how to use these major rivers to optimize agriculture. Ancient Egypt with the Nile, Mesopotamia (which means land between waters) located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, the Indus Valley civilization had the Indus River and the Yellow River civilization had the Yellow River. It is important to note that humans lived outside these areas too and had been doing so long before the rise these civilizations. These four ancient civilizations were able to exploit these rivers to produce more food and that enabled them to grow to a complexity never seen before. Garnt has a point. If civilization building is a game, then beginning your civilization around a major river with fertile flooding lands was the M.E.T.A to grow food faster and thus growing the population faster and so on.

Usage of META like in the final topic is, in fact, a backronym (an acronym [the word Connor wanted to use at this point in the video as well] formed after a term has already been notarized). The term 'meta' that the boys commonly throw around originates as an abbreviation/shorthand of the word 'metagaming' (literally meaning 'after the game') which is an incredibly broad topic that can be summarized as 'thinking about the game as a game'. This requires analysis about the game which typically involves analyzing popular and effective strategies and learning why they work and implementing them. You often see this term applied to any competitive game, especially card games who's metagame is defined by what decks are strongest and most popular at the time of analysis. This usage eventually transferred to other popular games such as the MOBA where a 'meta' was defined as the most popular and powerful characters at the moment seeing the most play/highest win rates. This usage was adopted by Twitch streamers and used to define a new metagame - the Twitch metagame or Twitch meta - where streamers analyze tactics employed by their peers to see what is most effective for high view counts, viewer retention, etc and begin to utilize those tactics themselves.
@gehtdichnichtsan24182 жыл бұрын
How to define "Meta" is really dependant on the context it is used in nowadays, but otherwise really good explanation. I mostly know it from Monster Hunter, where "M.E.T.A." is used for Most Efficient Tactic Available in relation to the mathematical strongest Equipment.
@AREAlhero2 жыл бұрын
@@gehtdichnichtsan2418 That's really interesting cause the terminology I always saw for that context was "Best in Slot (BiS)", which I heard before from gacha game contexts but I don't know which came first there, admittedly

@@gehtdichnichtsan2418 In that case the original meaning still aplies, because the game is hunting monster, and the game within the game is choosing the best equipment for the job. Actually I can't think of a situation when if one applies the other doesn't
@KingSteve132 жыл бұрын
@@AREAlhero In cases of games like MMO's, we use both BiS and META. In FFXIV, BiS is the best in slot gear for your job. While the META in FFXIV is based on the top performing/desired jobs in their roles (Tank, Healer, Caster, Physical/Magic DPS). in FFXIV at least, a job can have a few BiS gearsets based on specific game mechanics, but the META for what the best team comp will be the same, with slight adjustments whenever we get big job balance changes..
@OpenPodBayDoor2 жыл бұрын
I don't think "thinking about the game as a game" is the best way to describe what it was. Basically the original meaning of "metagame" comes from a certain type of competitive game, where responding to other players strategies was as important as the mechanics of the game itself. You could have huge swings in optimal strategy with no change in the underlying mechanics of the game, because how the rest of the community played mattered as much as the game. So the "metagame" was the decisions you made in anticipation of other players, as opposed to the game, which was the decisions you made in response to the mechanic. This led to the term "meta" coming to refer to the predominant way the game was being played at the moment. The problem, and the reason that the origin of the term has become so clouded, is that "metas" as they are thought of today change almost entirely in response to developer updates. Most competitive games don't exist in one form long enough for a true metagame to emerge, but the term meta has retained it's meaning, even though changes to it are driven almost entirely by mechanics, rather than player innovation (or at least, the two are happening simultaneously in such a way that is impossible to unravel which is happening).

I don't use tiktok but I occasionally watch youtube shorts. It's so much harder in that form to form a connection with the person making the videos. Even if the creator has no clue who I am, I still can connect more to the longer form content and it just overall feels more heartfelt.

"Meta" in gaming actually originally came from the term "metagame". Literally it means "the game about the game", so it's kinda like "the game about figuring out the game", which then means min-maxing and using the most optimal tactics. But because people are lazy now they've just shortened it to "meta". I agree with Connor that surely "Most effective tactic available" was something that was slapped onto it later.

@Stephen_Adegun2 жыл бұрын
Far as internet celebrities go, they might need to be taken more seriously than traditional celebrities. You see actors act. You see them play characters. Musicians are their music. You don't just see them being themselves constantly. Then you have things like Trash Taste, where viewers have seen these three just being themselves for hundreds of hours. Prime parasocial relationship fodder, so I'd hazard a guess that fans of internet celebrities are more likely to cause some incident and be overly familiar because they're more likely to see that celebrity as just a friends because of how much they've seen them just being a regular person.

Binge watching is amazing for shows with a continous story. It exponentially makes the watching experience better. If you already know about the show it doesnt matter if it isnt talked about. So it sucks for popularity but its great for the experience itself.

Re: the META conversation, the Acronym is a "Backronym", as in it was made retrospectively to follow an existing word. Ep 4 did not start out as Ep 4. It was just called "Star Wars". The Episode IV and A New Hope subtitle was not added in until 1981. About 6 years after it came out. During one of its rereleases
@kevinmenjivar10542 жыл бұрын
I looked it up, but Star Wars Episode IV wasn’t released as Episode IV on release. It was just known as “Star Wars” when released in 1977 and the title sequence was changed in 1981 to the new title.
