The UK version of Kitchen Nightmares was vastly superior to the American version. The US version they picked the most incompetent drama-fueled restaurants that made for good TV, and then gave them a free make-over after 40 minutes of Gordon screaming at them. The UK version was actually about fixing a strugglnig business and felt like a weekly documentary rather than a realty-TV circus. Gordon spent far more time on screen talking with the owners and staff in depth about actual business and person-improvement aspects, but as the boys point out, the owners were pretty bad to begin with so they never had great chances to succeed. Best UK episode was the original Momma Cherri's from UK season 2; that was like the very best example of what the show could be about, and to my memory, is the only time Gordon ever said he liked all of the restaurant's food from the get go.

Yeah. If you look at Michelin started restaurants 10 years ago, most of them are closed today. Because even with the success they have, their cooking or service methods aren't sustainable in the long run, or they struggled financially due to other circumstances and so on. The story behind Kitchen Nightmares is that around 80% of the restaurants were already on the way to being closed. They submit their name and background story and such to the producers which then go through the list to see which one has the most chances to make it big on TV. The ones you see that are still opened till today, a small amount, are the ones that were actually already doing well. Just a show which my ex was working on at the time.

Years ago, I heard of a restaurant owner was asking his friend's help on how to improve his failing restaurant before he loses all his money, the bank loans run out and he goes bankrupt. His friend had saved all the episodes of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares (UK and US) that had been aired on KZbin (along with episodes of Bar Rescue) and he gave these 40-minute videos to his desperate restaurateur friend to watch. Chef Gordon Ramsay may be abrasive, strict and profane, but he knows how to cook and run successful restaurants. His restaurants have been awarded 16 Michelin stars in total and currently hold a total of seven. His signature restaurant, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea, London, has held three Michelin stars since 2001 (quite some feat!). Gordon's lessons for successful restaurants are pretty basic, though. Cleanliness in the restaurant, kitchen and food are a must. A good chef must be passionate about cooking, serving the best food consistently that he/she can. The chef and staff must have the drive and discipline to fight against lazy habits (which will kill a restaurant). A good restaurant owner/manager must be attentive throughout every service to make sure everything is running smooth and staff is not robbing the place blind. The chef and staff should be always interested in learning more of their craft to improve their knowledge, techniques and skills. Use fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and make sure they are organized and well labeled in the refrigerators and used or thrown away before becoming old and spoiled (don't kill your clientele with spoiled food!). Serve a small menu of good food so you do not have to keep and prep a wide variety of ingredients. Keep your prices as low as you can to attract customers. Having good signage on the restaurant is important along with advertising and going out to the public to distribute free samples to show how good your cooking is. And focus everything to the happiness of your customers. Around 60 percent of new restaurants fail within the first year. And nearly 80 percent shutter before their fifth anniversary. Often, the No. 1 reason is simply location - and the general lack of self-awareness that you have no business actually being in that location. www.cnbc.com/2016/01/20/heres-the-real-reason-why-most-restaurants-fail.html Top 7 Reasons why Restaurants Fail within the 1st Year of Operations kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5Cmm5xtfammpsU Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares UK uncensored episodes: kzbin.info/door/UZzyuAlhHNP3oiuMjn7RfQ Kitchen Nightmares US uncensored episodes: kzbin.info/door/ttMm3hHlDSqXGYmp7tqrEA Gordon Ramsay's Top 10 Rules For Success (@GordonRamsay) kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaeuY3SPaLJ3rJI

I always have to assume any 'new' owners opening a restaurant don't have the right procedures and practices in place. I think it was in The E-Myth Revisited, but it explains that Franchises are so great because you have a book with all of these ironed out. If you're starting a brand new restaurant and learning how to fix problems on the fly all the time, combined with forgetting important things in the background, you're going to get overwhelmed and fail. Gordon definitely shows in these shows about how important it is to have a method to a kitchens madness. Who has what responsibilities (so everything gets done), how to do things (try and be efficient and simple), and so on. You see some restaurants try and overcomplicate things in these shows. The only complicated thing Gordon does is try and source things locally and not cook frozen packaged food. But that's important to make your food stand out. Why do we see restaurant franchises last so much longer? Everything is already ironed out. Sourcing ingredients, training new employees, how to run the kitchen, front of house. What POS system to use, how to clean between nights with deep cleaning required overnight as well. That's why 'most' franchises can still seem like a well run machine.
@sejembalm
@sejembalm Жыл бұрын
@@notatrollzorz I have heard from some restaurant owners how vital it is to have the experience to build up to running your own restaurant. First working in restaurants, then running a franchise restaurant, and building up the money and experience to owning a restaurant of their vision. It's tough and that's why the failure rate is so high in new restaurants.

Whenever people bring up how many of the restaurants on Kitchen Nightmares shut down, I feel like there needs to be an asterisk next to it. Sure, many of them failed due to bad ownership, but most of those places were already in debt and on the verge of bankruptcy, something that can't be fixed by a makeover and a pep talk. I know there were a couple that actually became pretty successful after the show but they still closed due to COVID.

Yeah, the Covid thing is one I was wondering about. Most of the restaurants in the show, well, most of the owners of those restaurants gave up because they couldn't keep up the store after the backlash they had for the poor conditions of the place. Another anyone remember the karen chick who had an Italian husband? They closed down their restaurant and the chick opened a new business which was pastries, she was more Passionate on pastries than on a full on restaurant. Now her business is going steady and her and her husband's livelihood had been steady since then. I might try and find the video of them both with their new pastry shop. Edit: their names are amy and samy. And their restaurant was a baking Company, their new business is strictly pastries. I might add this to not have some confusion to my comment.

Most people have this weird idea about shows like kitchen nightmares in that Gordon Ramsay is supposed to swoop in and save the day, and it's his fault if the restaurant fails later. That's not at all the reality of the situation. The show crew lays the foundation and teach the staff how to succeed, but it's up to the staff to follow through and actually turn everything around. Contacting the show in the first place is a sign of desperation and some restaurants are clearly doomed to fail, and the fault is entirely on management.

Most of the restaurants are either too far gone to be saved, or the people dont listen once they leave.

Gordon Ramsey actually liked the dessert at the Amy's Baking Company episode. That episode is freak'in peak TV. It is like a dumpster fire that is totally and utterly mesmerizing. You should really look away but can't... too beautiful.

1.To be fair most of those restaurants either were alredy well on their way to being closed or their management went right back to their old ways a couple of weeks after Gordon left 2. The UK version is infinately better then US version. Purely because the former is actually about Gordon going in-depth , talking with the owners and staff and just genuenly trying to figure out what's killing the restaurant Whereas the latter is literally just a meme generator. Its a lot of fun to downriggr hillarious don't get me wrong, but the actual show is super formulaic after a while with maybe the occasional episode actually shining light on some of the *f@cked up* and/or emotional situations. Basically turning it into a family drama with Gordon being the therapist.

There was this one episode where this restaurant called Piccolo Teatro was featured. And in the end after all the improvements the owner Rachel left suddenly with no explanation and became a sex worker.

And if I remember correctly, the restaurant was owned by her dad, so she said "nah, you don't have to support me anymore, I'll rather be a prostitute". Also she accused Gordon of hitting on her

The Nobu thing was fucked up since it was proven that he met his goal a few times but the producers never said anything cause it was raking in views. It was also one of the first video game livesstreams as he got a PlayStation 1, a tv and games from some of his raffle wins until they took the ps1 away from him

Personally I think Gordon just renovates or change how the restaurant work then give advice to the owners but not actually teach the owners how to do it , like this stuff should take like a month of rehabilitation under Gordon but no when it almost looks like it's doing pretty well once Gordon leaves they just revert back and while some did take Gordon's advice others just closed .

It is super difficult. I wasn't there for it, but my extended family opened a restaurant which was attached to the farm/bakery/store, and even with all of the other established revenue streams, the restaurant lost so much money it didn't last a year. Even a small ice cream room to attract families lost money year after year until we eventually closed it.

British people pointing at the weirdness and cruelty of Japanese game shows is major pot kettle vibes. There was this show called Distraction hosted by Jimmy Carr and the stuff they put people through for that as well as Big Brother and I'm A Celebrity is just insane. Example from Distraction is where people sat with cheek retractors under cages of live pigeons and Jimmy was blasting air horns at the cages to get the pigeons to shit in the people's mouths. Also at the end of an episode of Distraction the last challenge would always be to try and save your prize from getting destroyed. Like you'd win a brand new car and have to stop it from getting damaged too badly from getting smashed with a sledgehammer or you'd win cash but try to stop as much of it from getting thrown in a cement mixer as you can.

Just because a restaurant is closed does not mean it's a failure. Most restaurant owners sell their property after going even or more after years.

So not saying the people on the show aren't bad owners, but restaurants are pretty terrible investments. I had a buddy who's wife wants to start a restaurant tell me that 75% of restaurants fail in the first 5 years, 90% fail in the first 10(I don't have a source for this but honest seem pretty correct). So I would stay far away from that business unless I am buying a franchise or I am really really passionate about food.

Tbf a lot of the owners end up selling the restaurants even if they do pull out of a nosedive most of the time. Turns out the publicity of Gordon Ramsay has a lot more resale value than running a shitty restaurant

honestly i don't think its fair to say Kitchen Nightmares didn't help due to the 80% closure rate cause there is not time factor for that statistic. Like, can you really say Gordon didn't help a restaurant when a fair number of these places lasted another 2-5 years afterward? The ones that didn't were some mix of: Selling the place Owners retiring People dying The debts being too large to take down A lot of the ones that closed within the year state "went back to the old menu" in some form or fashion and try to blame Gordon for not solving their problems when they undo most to all the changes he made. Honestly if they had found a middle ground between the old and new they may have found a new spark cause a number of the ones that are still open returned a select few items from the old menu that customers liked and kept the new menu, taking what was the fundamental lesson of the show to heart. Adapt to changing times and customer base
