My wife and I, now both 80yrs, have been holidaying all over Scotland and the Hebrides since 1986. Never to Orkney & Shetland. We both love all your videos and if we were younger we would be the first in the queue to sign up for the fantastic opportunity to meet and travel with you. Looking forward to more of your experiences on video. Thanks for brightening up our lives. I have worked with many Scottish colleagues and they will tell you that I have said many times, "If I wasn't a Yorkshireman I would be a Scotsman".

@@ruthaisling Hi Ruth, We remember our first trip was intended as a touring camping trip. Our first night was near Aberfoyle, then Drumnadrochit on Loch Ness. Then it rained, oh how it rained. Next night Ullapool B&B and we will never forget the view coming over hill and looking down on Ullapool. Then it was ferry to Stornoway, then went B & B on Isle of Harris with a great lady called Ina Mcleod on the Golden Road, Isle of Harris. Then ferry to Skye and back. Then Uist, Lochboisdale ferry to Oban. We have ferried the Outer Hebrides many times and we love it. A place we also love is a cottage we rented many times at Lochbuie on the Isle of Mull. Favourite places too many to mention. We have stayed on all the Western Isles and Brora on the east coast and travelled nearly all the Highlands. Far too any places to list. Without doubt though, the ferries always add to the adventure. Best wishes for your future travels. Keith and June. (My profile pic is on the Isle of Skye 1986) Ps- Iona a place of peace.

I understand your point, but all-inclusive resort holidays are often cheaper than travelling within the UK. I’ve designed this itinerary based on feedback from over 300 survey responses, where Shetland & Orkney was one of the top choices. Many requested comfortable accommodation, so I’ve chosen 3 and 4-star hotels, which naturally raises the price compared to hostels or camping. This trip is similarly priced to other tours of Shetland & Orkney of the same length. I know it might not suit everyone, but it’s been tailored to the feedback I received. 🙂

For all those who are moaning about the price. It does not take much of a business cost model to get to Ruth’s price. Scotland is not a cheap country for hotels and larger hotels to accommodate 14+ people inevitably put you into the higher price bracket. It could be cheaper if the trip is done at out of season prices i.e. Jan / Feb but the days are so short you wouldn’t see any thing and the ferry crossings you would be talking to Hewie not Ruth. Many hotels there is a 4:1 price difference between Off Peak (if they open at all) and Peak all the money has to be made for the year in a very short season. The Shetland residents get the ferry heavily subsidised which no doubt is paid for by none Shetland residents. With the underlying costs I think the price is realistic for what is on offer.
@ruthaisling2 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing this Andrew. Shetland and Orkney are not the cheapest destinations to visit in the first place. There is also high demand for a very limited number of decent hotels which also increases the prices.

Biggest regret in my life. I worked at Dounreay for 7 months but we worked 6 days a week, so I only had limited time to explore the north coast. You can see the Orkneys from Thurso harbour. Then I was made redundant. Stupidly I agreed to head back to Gateshead to have the MD explain my redundancy terms. I should have dug my heels in and spent the next couple of weeks exploring the north, including hopping on the ferry from Scrabster to Stromness. Now I'm back on the south coast and I'd need a couple of days just to get to the far north, or even Aberdeen, then get on a ferry. I'd really love to explore the stone age stuff on Orkney, but I think that trip will need to wait until I retire!

Thanks for the feedback John. The pricing is reflective of what is included in the trip: NorthLink ferry travel with cabin accommodation, stays in 3- and 4-star hotels, meals at top dining spots in Shetland and Orkney, transportation throughout the trip, and various activities. The itinerary was designed based on survey feedback, which emphasised the preference for comfortable accommodations which raises the cost compared to hostels or camping. This trip is also comparable in price to other trips available to Shetland & Orkney of a similar length. I understand this trip won't be for everyone, but it has been created based on the feedback I received. 🙂

@ruthaisling2 ай бұрын
Hi Cathy, thanks for your feedback. The higher price reflects the extra charges from hotels and ferries for single occupancy. To offer the same rate, I would need to pair two solo travellers of the same sex in one room. Would this be something you’d consider? I could explore this option for a future trip.
