I live in Georgia and I totally agree with you about Helen. The restaurants are horrible, the shops aren't any better. It is fun to tube the Hooch (when the water level is up) and we generally travel to Dahlonega to sightsee. It's an old gold mining town. We have tent camped at Jenny's Creek several times and always really liked it there. You are definitely right about the couple who own the park..they are super sweet. So enjoyed your video. We visited Dahlongega/Cleveland area in January last year and it was a fantastic trip. Off season is great because there are no crowds and you get visit so many more places. Goooooood forenoon!! I thought that Marriott Atrium was super cool!!! Made me a bit dizzy looking up...would loved to ride on them glass elevators!!! Well after seeing Helen GA, I am like wow I would not go there with all that crowds...and you did give it a polite "bad" review. I am sure you seen, smelled, observed much more than what you filmed. Me personally, I would have left the restaurant after 20 mins with no food--but that's me, unless the wait staff informed me it would take over an hour to get your food... And seeing you had issues with this segment of your trip...hey, look on the bright side, it was an adventure!!

I really enjoy watching your adventures. Unfortunately you went to Helen during the worst time. We go once a year during January or February. The town is virtually empty during these times and is much more enjoyable. You get much better service without the crowds and the restaurants are actually enjoyable. It's much colder during those months so you have to wear a jacket. Sometimes it snows in January or February. If you ever go back to the area try hitting some of the surrounding areas. There are so many beautiful waterfall hikes like Anna Ruby Falls, and so many wineries and breweries to see. Lots of hiking, horse and biking trails. Brasstown Bald is a must see. It's the highest point in Georgia. On a clear day you can see 4 different states. Bell Mountain is a short drive from there and offers spectacular views. As you so often mention in your videos, "timing is everything". Happy travels.

👍My horse farm is very close to the winery. Helen & those wineries are really no big deal. It’s just something to do. Some of those roads are challenging. Personally I like the country slow feel of the area (as compared to every day life closer into the city). The traffic in & out of Helen is the worst and it has been that way for a long time. I have the best of both worlds because I also have a home off 400 so I can easily get in town to ATL. The Helen / Cleveland areas have become very over crowded in the last 15-20 years. Weekends are always very busy.

In the 1970's there were a few German speakers that had orchards and stores in Helen. Native Georgians don't seem to go there, unless they are driving through to go to the many natural waterfalls, state parks or "tubing". The N. Georgia mountains are lovely and you will most likely leave feeling refreshed, as long as you avoid Hell-In Georgia.

With you on Helen being a tourist trap. Way too many people in October. The COE parks all shutdown around Oct for the winter, and not sure why... We found Don Carter SP about 10 miles NE of Gainesville. It's a new SP campground. Also Tallulah Falls SP has a nice campground that is very close to 441 for local site seeing. But, they do lock the gate at 10pm until 7am. You could park outside to gate and walk to your site, but waiting to leave can be a nuisance.

A lot of Helen is tourist traps, but a lot of Helen is gorgeous and worth the trip. My grandparents have a house on a creek in Cleveland, (near where the winery you tried to stay in.) About 10 mins from the winery is dicks Creek falls which are so so pretty and they have free overnight parking in the park. It's better to go in the off season. The troll tavern, the restaurant under the bridge and next to the river, is so so peaceful and pretty in the off season. Helen is a bit touristy especially since all the good stuff is going away (There used to even be a tarantula museum!!)

Helen is sister town to Bavaria Germany. There’s an actual plaque that states it. The buildings were created to be similar to Bavaria Germany. It wasn’t such a “tourist trap” as it is now. I think Helen has change to cater to the younger crowds now. I would never gone during Oktoberfest. There’s also the Anna Ruby Fall’s as well. As well you could do your own mining at the Helens mines.

Ok. We’ve been waiting for the video to see why you didn’t like Helen. We fully understand now. I wouldn’t of enjoyed it either then and my roots come from there. I’ve been to Helen countless times, but never during Octoberfest. That was not a good depiction for the town for the rest of the year I can attest. The best time to go is during the summer in our opinion. And since it is a tourist town, try to avoid the weekends at almost any time of the year. We’ve never eaten at the Old Heidelberg and couldn’t of recommended it. We would recommend The Troll Tavern and Paul’s. Paul’s is on he river at he road and I believe the place you mentioned behind it is part of Paul’s. If I recall, I think they serve things more like burgers back there, while Paul’s is more of a steakhouse type of place. The Troll Tavern is across the street from Paul’s, in the river. Hiders has a good breakfast. And Betty’s Grocery store is pretty cool inside. They have a nice little but her counter in the back where we’ve bought steaks and a slab of bacon. It’s a good place to go when camping in the area. Which brings me to Unicoi State Park. We love this place. Even the “Lodge” (hotel) is decent there. There lots of hiking and mountain biking trails in the area. I’ve attended a fat tire festival there in the past. Over near Unicoi is Anna Ruby Falls, a pretty cool easy walk to some waterfalls. And while there in the summer, you have to inner tube the river or what they call tubing the ‘hooch (chattahoochee river). Nearby Helen there are other waterfalls, Brasstown Bald (highest point in Georgia), Nora’s Mill (old grist Mill on the river that sells all different things that they grind on site). There’s a winery across the street, but I can not recommend so or not on. Also, before getting into Helen, you might of noticed a mound in the middle of a cow pasture. It’s an old Indian burial mound. Almost forgot, Goats on the Roof. Never went inside, but there were goats all over, including on the roof! Do it again at a different time and plan on staying a couple days exploring, it will be better for you.

What? Who thumb down my Uncle Robert? No body ever thumbs down his videos guys If you didn’t enjoy then simply don’t watch his work but please don’t be negative to a super nice guy please. I stayed at the Peachtree in Atlanta and it’s so neat but also so expensive. Robert do you ever add a fuel stabilizer such as stp and if so what type? I do use seafoam product and it does help with mileage.i think seafoam is the best fuel addive. Coca-cola museum is interesting in Atlanta. This has to be one of your longest videos you’ve ever made and great work. Thank you and stay hydrated my friend

Can't please everybody my friend. I haven't added anything to the fuel but it may be a good idea. Old Kia is running great so I don't really want to mess with it other than regular oil changes. Coca Cola museum is on the to do list. We go to Atlanta pretty often so probably next time.

Thank you for the video Robert, I have traveled many places here several times. I enjoyed the Coca-Cola and Aquarium Tour (Combo deal), CNN was nice be able to say 'I been there'...but not so much enjoyable. Also I been Stone Mountain and Helen. I have heard you mention on other videos about THIS TRIP you say did not have a good experience. Now I see the video and understand what was happening. I really think it was just bad timing, combined together with other bad events in the trip already make a bad tempo for the rest of your trip- difficult to get good mood back after difficulties parking at winery, several campgrounds not easy parking or closed, too much crown in Helen, restaurant after Helen full and no parking, next campgrounds Corps = early locked access. Your trip had so many inconveniences - i start to laugh to be funny instead of frustrated. I know you are usually prepared better and have already good research/plans before you visit...was this trip not researched good as you do others...? and whoa! also because you visit there in the middle of Oktoberfest. It doesn't take much people for that tiny/little town to get overcrowded very easily. Service is usually about 5-10mins and food about 20-30mins but, during Festivals and Holidays many local College students come to drink their day away PLUS the regular 'Tourists' too. The service suffers because the waiters and cooks just can't keep up with the crowds. I have been there few times and had good experiences even a week just before or after the Oktoberfest. I recommend the Troll Tavern, Pauls Steakhouse, or Cafe International (all 3 located at the bridge). Nearby Unicoi State Park and the Rubi Falls are enjoyable points of interest too. I would say to give this area another chance (now that you have better information, recommendations). It's only a small town so I would maybe combine with a visit to the towns Dawsonville or Dahlonega to see original cabbage patch dolls or maybe ride gentle horses on nature trail. Also Dahlonega has a good WInery name Wolf Mountain Vineyards has large area and beautiful views surrounded by Mountains. The tubing rides are simple fun too and you see nature from the water perspective. When you saw the Fox Theatre, there is good food at Gladys Knights restaurant, go past to the next block and see opposite side of street (authentic Chicken and Waffles with honey!) Ha-ha you got the SAME parking garage...I walk everywhere from there...Olympic Park, Coca-Cola, Aquarium, CNN, Westin 'rotating' restaurant (but now they stopped rotating it), Teds Montana Grill (Ted Turner has many restaurant locations but THIS ONE he lives upstairs in the Penthouse - of course why not when he already owns the building), Hooters, Hard Rock Cafe. Again thank you for the video.

Don’t blame you for dissing a place like Helena. A lot of small towns try to find a theme to attract tourism. I’ve seen lots of places like this where they don’t do it well. If you are going to create a theme, do an honest one. I’ve never been to Helena, but it looks like beautiful countryside and they might have been better off trying to promote their actual heritage and attractions rather than simply inventing a story. They have obviously created a lot of traffic so they will do ok financially, but...

After living in Germany for 10 years and visiting Helen 2 years ago, I have to conclude I agree with your review of Helen. We did not go during Oktoberfest. But, the food was not good nor the desserts. I don't mind it being a make shift German town. What I don't like is when there is no effort to make the foods genuine. Germany has more than beer! Robert -- I tent-camped on that very site at Jenny's Creek! When you approached it, I thought ... oh, no - he's not going to try to back that thing into MY site, is he? I think most of that campground is kinda tight. Once I had my tent set up, I had to park my vehicle just as you did. Oh, and you may find it interesting to note that many Georgians call Helen, Georgia, "Hell in Georgia." That said, there are MANY other very lovely places in the north GA mountains, and the waterfalls (real ones, not fake like the one in Helen) are spectacular.

While they were gone I heard weird booming noises. I came out to the hall to see wind going nuts outside and the only window in the hall was throttling like it was going to pop. Hm. When they came back they'd said a tornado had blown thru! The next day I found out the roof to some sports dome was torn off blocks from us! Eh. That was nice. Then we went to the top of the Westin. I'm not fond of heights anyway and when I got home my cousin's husband said of the elevator..."Oh they fixed it?" Har har. Very nice. I'm Not a huge fan of HotLanta. The down elevator was broken at the Day's Inn so we had to throw our soft stuff out our window. LOL ( not so many cameras back then ). We weren't rude we just had to get out by check out. My girls talk about that to this day. Ty bless!

It's not you; it's Helen itself. It's as silly a place as you'd ever want to visit. ;)

Imagine a group of North Georgia businessmen dreaming of this boondoggle and thinking they are fooling people.the locals in this area avoid it too.it is much easier to find better places to eat in the nearby communities.sometimes the best food is in the least known spots

Hello Robert I love your videos. I especially do not like bad service as well. Can I suggest that when you do not find parking for you and your Trailer maybe look at adjacent parking lots and walk a bit to the place you are looking to go. Such as a nearby gas station accross the highway or something. The winery maybe you could have pulled in along the road on the grass ? With the owners permission of course. Keep on making them

I don't live very far from Helen, and I do a LOT of motorcycle riding in the north Georgia mountains. As a general rule I will avoid the "downtown" area, but I do think it's a good thing that the town found a way to prosper after its decline from the gold and logging years. Certainly not to everyone's taste (including mine), but clearly many people love going to touristy places like that.

You should try Currahee Vineyards in Toccoa Georgia. It’s only 1 hour from the Cottage and is at the base of Currahee mountain. It’s the place the army trained at the beginning of the Band of Brothers series. They would be happy to host you guys 👍

Thanks for sharing your experience in Helen, GA. I've made a mental note NOT to go there during Oktoberfest. I hope our Harvest Home experience will be better then yours. Could you have waited out the "tasters", then took their parking spots? The "Hosts" should have told you they were having a special event on site. I hate driving through Atlanta! I can't imagine stopping there to sightsee. Too crowded for me. The video was a little long, for me. Good music, as usual! Ted

I hope you had an opportunity to make it up to UNICOI State Park. It's great. Nice camping, nice hotel, nice hikes. Will you be able to get over to Ellijay for some camping? Any plans to get up to VA?

I've heard that Unicoi State Park is great, but we didn't have a chance to visit this time. In the next video I'm going to show Ellijay

I will stay away from Helen, based on your video. I hate crowded places. Last year when we were in the Smokey Mtns in October, Gatlinburg TN was so overrun with tourists, we just drove right through and out the other end.
