Added tips: in addition to adding one or two days of shirts in your personal item, also add a small baggie with a travel size, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrush, in case you get stuck in the airport, or in a hotel due to flight delays and cancellations. Travel tip number two, put the items that you want in the seat pocket in front of you in a baggie so items are not easily lost or are in the grime in the pockets.

Hi. Great tips! If I am flying or cruising I always pack my bathing suit and coverup in my carry on in case there is a delay in receiving my luggage or in the event it is lost. Shopping for replacement clothes is an inconvenience for sure, but the idea of searching for a new bathing suit would put me in panic mode 😂!

One of the huge advantages of being a senior citizen is that finally I can board early and no longer have a problem finding a spot for my carry on in the overhead bin. There should be something good that comes with being old and gray. This is one of my favorites.

@@dela3490 I've travelled with many: Air Canada, Caribbean Airlines, American and Delta etc. I buy my tickets online and choose the more expensive comfort seats in the economy; I buy them early and only choose single-digit seating plus, I get to board the aircraft just after the old and sickly passengers. I've never had any problems with storing my carry-on in the overhead bin; I usually take one carry-on and one personal item on board. When buying your tickets buy them many months in advance; when choosing your seats, you'd see the layout of the aircraft so choose the seats that you want. Hope this helps!

On my trip to Norway in September, I took my Nurse Practitioner’s business card and wrote the name, address, and phone number of the pharmacy I use on the back. I also took a 2-pack box of Covid tests. These were her ideas. Since part of my trip was a cruise, I got medication for dizziness and seasickness. The pharmacy gave me extra labels and I transferred my medication to plastic bags. No bottles. Everything was flat.

You need be careful with removing medicine from their original containers. Some Middle-Eastern and Asian countries won’t accept entry of medicines in weekly pill containers or in a bag(gie), even when one can produce their prescription or the label from the prescription bottle/box. Check the country ahead of time.

My tip is if you are flying international, check the requirements for the airport you are flying back from. They probably are different than US airports. For instance many airports outside the US do not allow the nice, TSA approved liquids bags. They require a true quart sized bag. When I run into this, I carry a quart sized ziplock bag with me for the end of my trip. I also empty any liquids I didn’t use during my trip so I don’t run out of space. No matter what requirements are different, it’s always better to be prepared rather than be surprised. Especially in the security line.

This exact thing happened to me last September flying back home from Heathrow. I had been diligent about packing 'liquids' in my TSA approved see though pouch. I remembered on my first cruise when a couple's suitcase was lost by the airline. They only carried their backpacks on the plane, but no exchange of clothes and shoes. I still remembered their frustration of purchasing clothes and dealing with the airline regarding their luggage. I tell people all the time that even if you do check your luggage, take a carry on bag, suitcase, or backpack on a plane with you with clothes, shoes, and underwear for at least 2-3 days.

My family went on a Christmas cruise this past year. Our luggage got lost and we went the entire cruise without our luggage. Thanks to you and your videos I packed extra clothes in my carry-on. My husband did not. He carried most of our snacks in his carry-on. Never again will he do that. When we did get our luggage almost 2 weeks after getting home it had been plundered through and several valuable items were stolen. No TSA check baggage letter was in our luggage. It has been a hassle filing claim forms, which we did. We have not heard back from the airline yet. A note of warning, there are several things not covered in your luggage. No jewelry or electronics are covered for reimbursement. Read the article about what is covered and not covered before putting items in your luggage. Thank you Laurie for your great videos and information. They are very helpful.

@Kelly Robertson We flew on American Airlines. We continue to contact them after sending receipts, bank, and credit card statements along with the requested forms and information to the Central Baggage Claim Specialist. This has been going on since December 23rd, 2022. We are totally disgusted with American Airlines. Our advice is to fly with any airline EXCEPT American Airlines. They want your money, but when they make a mistake, they don't want to do what is right and pay for their mistakes.

British Airways took 8 months to pay us a measly $297 for losing our luggage for 6 days. What a pain to submit receipts for everything we had to purchase. It was well over $297. No letter of explanation or apology was sent. Just a bank deposit was how we found out we finally got paid. 🤬

@LYDIA DAILEY I am sorry you went through the terrible ordeal with British Airway. It seems Airlines want your money but are not responsible for their mistakes. We are still dealing with American Airlines, but there is no apology either. It is unreasonable when they want itemized receipts for purchases. Three of our receipts were from the market paid with a credit card they used a handheld device that only prints out the total paid. American Airlines refuses to accept and pay us for those receipts. We only turned in 6 receipts for t-shirts, shorts, toiletries, and flip flops. So they want to pay us for the other three receipts. Not to mention the clothes, shoes, accessories, toiletries, and valuable items (binoculars for one) stolen from our luggage because we don't have receipts for items bought years ago or gifts. This is a ridiculous headache, and it should not be this way. It's interesting to know British Airway is the same sorry Airlines. Thank you for your response.

@@beckymelton1906 again that honestly really sucks and I’m again very sorry that happened, it seems like company’s only listen if you keep harassing them about it or publicly contact them. A question I've always wanted to ask: concerning the overhead compartments, if they are meant for the person in the corresponding seat, why are those who are boarding first get to use up anyone's overhead compartment? Why isn't it "your seat & your compartment" enforced? Thank you for your videos! Very helpful!
@gingerhamilton8009
@gingerhamilton8009 Жыл бұрын
I agree completely and believe airlines must implement a policy that you can only put you bag in the compartment above your seat.
@keisha-jn
@keisha-jn Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately overhead compartment space is considered shared space, not assigned space like a seat (unless you're on an airline that requires you to pay extra for the overhead space). To be honest most aircraft (regardless of airline) won't have enough overhead space if each passenger has a carry-on bag on a full flight. The space just isn't there.
@corriepitt7630
@corriepitt7630 Жыл бұрын
1.) The airlines allow more luggage onboard (square-inch-wise) than will fit in the total overhead compartment space. 2.) People put both bags (carryon and personal item) -and coats - in the overhead instead of stowing the personal item under the seat, and wearing the coat. 3.) The airline would waste huge amounts of boarding time arbitrating space boundaries (that’s MY part of the overhead bin!) 4.) If luggage could be checked free AND the baggage quickly collected right in the same room as you deplane (as with one Berlin airport) this would cease to be a problem.

I use my carryon to pack everything for my trip. I pack all of my camera gear in my carryon (thousands of dollars in value) only to argue with the airlines to allow me to keep it with me. They will not discuss it, even though the compartment above my seat was empty. I now use a Pelican case (designed to carry camera gear and guns) which is heavy but most employees of airlines think I am carrying a gun which puts people on edge. So frustrating.

Our family flew to Orlando from Wilmington, NC for our family Christmas cruise. We NEVER got our luggage the entire cruise. Royal Caribbean was great trying to locate and get our luggage to us but with no luck. They were on hold numerous times for an hour and a half and never reached anyone at American Airlines. We left on December 23rd and returned on December 30th, still with no luggage. Finally, our luggage was returned to us on January 2nd after it was plundered through and several valuable items missing. There was no TSA check baggage letter in any luggage. We are in the process of making a claim but it's a hassle when the airline wants receipts for everything missing from our luggage. Who keeps receipts from items bought months or years ago? Thank you, Laurie, for all your great tips. I had my medicine, an extra pair of clothes, 2 pairs of underwear, my electronics, and some toiletries in my carry-on. But not enough for a week on a cruise. No bathing suits, flip flops, dress for dinner, makeup, hairbrush, hair products, face moisturizer, etc. But you helped get me through a few days with your advice. In filling a claim we have learned a lot, about jewelry, electronics, and many other items that are not covered as a loss with the airline. My luggage weighed 42 pounds when checked in and returned weighing approximately 15 pounds. Someone or a group of thieves got their Christmas presents out of my luggage and the rest of our families. I can't imagine someone didn't see this happening. The moral of this story is; to follow Laurie's advice and use a carry-on and personal item for your trips. Unfortunately, people cannot be trusted anywhere.

My tip is pack your personal item bag as if it is a weekender bag and the carry-on with the extra clothes for however many days you need. Then whether your carry-on gets checked/lost, you always have your important documents, medications, toiletries, electronics, and change of clothes with you in your personal item bag. Bonus points if the outfit in your personal item is the one you plan to wear on the return trip so you can pack everything else away in the other luggage the night before leaving, especially if cruising.

With all the craziness in the world and the flight problems lately, I am in the habit of bringing a couple packs of freeze dried oatmeal like mountain house, small kind bars, mints, a little chocolate, a Sawyer water filtering straw with a collapsible bottle and a small first aid kit that includes emergency blankets. If I get stuck, I'm able to have food, purify water, take care of any small injuries or pain and keep warm. It takes up about half of my "never let go of it" bag but that's ok because the change of clothes I bring are compact like tanks tops for layering, underwear, socks and yoga pants. I layer my flight outfit to include a cardigan of some sort, a jacket and a scarf all which can be used in combination with the change of clothes I bring. Works great and it all fits in the backpack that can go under the seat. For additional space I have used a waist pack in place of my purse. If I'm wearing it, it doesn't count as a bag and I have everything I need in flight without having to rummage through my carry on.

You sound like me, I have a week's worth of "lifeboat rations", a robust first aid kit, a water filter bottle, and a good emergency kit in my personal item bag, along with changes of clothing and unmentionables, and Fitkicks slip on shoes. I also wear a 15 pocket travel vest underneath a travel jacket with hidden inside pockets on the plane, all kinds of useful stuff can fit in those pockets (a mylar tube tent fits perfectly in the back map pocket) and if I had to escape through the emergency exit and was not allowed to bring my bag with me, I'd still have my ID, credit cards, and necessary medications on me. The crown pocket of my Tilley hat even has a mylar emergency blanket and a few folded bills in the crown pocket! I also pack my "travel kitchen" in a Stasher bag, which can be used to store leftovers in the hotel fridge, heat food up in the microwave, eat out of, bring leftovers back from a restaurant, and can even be used for a hot pack or ice pack in case of a sprain or sore back.

Laurie used airtags this latest trip, multiple flights and an 18 hour layover with a checked bag, in Dubai. I boarded the next day pleased to know my bag was in the hold before takeoff...no need to queue at the carousel either , you can sit and wait until the ap tells you that your and your bag are about to be reunited and walk over and retrieve the suitcase...you can also use it to predict a gate...espeically at BCN. Great tip and gift idea for frequent flyers. Still find here in Spain everything needs to come out...computer, liquids, shoes off, jackets, scarves all off...still fairly basic.

Hi Laurie, love watching your videos! I’ve found that my carryon piece depends on type of plane. If it’s a small one the under seat may not fit and the overhead bin maybe too small for a hard piece of luggage. So I have a Lug soft travel bag for those occasions. Don’t know if you remember those clear bags that you used vacuum to compress but I’ve added bringing that. Good for wet bathing suit or (as happened last trip) when at boarding had to check carryon. I just took out essentials and into clear bag which easily fit under seat.

I am a big fan of the clear bags. Once I had my carryon gate checked and it looked like someone dropped it in a lake. Everything was soaked. And, you don't need a vacuum to seal it. You can use your mouth in a pinch 🙂

That medicine tip is SO important! I don't get why people would check their medicines, when so much luggage gets lost. I understand the seat back pocket is filthy, so I take a plastic bag to tuck inside it, then put in the bag the items I want at hand. Any bag will do, but a dog waste bag is a great size, and takes up so little space that you can easily pack one for each leg of your trip.

Another good tip is traveling through Europe during holidays and before April, many shops, department stores are offering promotion and discounts. We flew home from Paris in May and they required all liquids and pastes to be in their quart bag. I had checked all my liquids but kept the “solid” hand salve because it doesn’t require segregation in the US. Laurie, Your travel tips have been invaluable to me while recently travelling internationally via Heathrow. Any liquids I had which were clearly too much for the clear bag, the Boarder Force Officer simply provided one for me. I also had a medical liquid bottle in my coat (GTN - for Angina; absolutely no problem as I required that at all times). Some liquids were taken away for sampling (perfectly acceptable as far as I am concerned - sampling was quick, efficient and visible at all times). Hi Laurie, we appreciate you so much. Our son is a newer commercial airline pilot and we are starting to utilize the ‘standby’ flying perks so we appreciate hearing your experiences and knowledge. We have had to learn to be patient and go with the flow because every airport is different, every airline is different and every gate agent is different… nothing seems to be rigidly standardized, nothing is the same… except the fact that it is going to be a different experience every trip 🤓! We just got back from 10 days in Europe. (Feb. 2023). Portland, Oregon to Amsterdam to Barcelona to Paris and back - 7 flights in total. There are a lot of people traveling right now and the lines appear long but, as you stated, they are actually very good at herding people through quickly. Going with the attitude of flexibility and expectation of change is critical to traveling a lot.

I traveled a few days ago to/from Europe & can confirm that liquids were not required to be placed separately in the bin at security. I can also offer a couple of tips. RFID wallets are both clumsy and not designed to my liking. What I do instead is form a pocket out of a sheet of aluminum foil, folding it in half and then folding in the sides. I make it big enough that it provides enough depth for all of my cards. The other tip I got from a friend, is to take along a light bulb when traveling, as hotel rooms have notoriously poor lighting, and switch it with one there. Remember to switch back before checking out. Be sure to pack the bulb well.

I'm not into fashion and don't need my usualy makeup kit. Contrary to many travelers, I'd rather check my bag and have the airline take it to my destination. We all have to spend way too much time waiting in the airport waitng to get out of town. I dont have the freedom of walking through the airport, sitting comfortably at a bar or even just going to the restroom. I preferf hands free with just a backpack of meds to start my stress free vacation. Your thoughts please. Of course, since I do use your suggestions my traveling routine goes very smoothly.

Tip - buy a set of bright ugly king size soft cotton pillow cases. Then, turn the pillow case inside out & pack your outfits in the pillow case(s). Traveling so much internationally, we've learned. This way you can turn the pillowcase right-side out and put over the hotel pillow case so you have the reassuring pleasure of knowing what your face is up against. Bet you didn't know that many hotels (and not just budget hotels!) Might only spray their pillows because they take so long to change out. The other benefit of pillowcase packing is when their are two people in a family traveling together you can split your outfits between checked luggage. For example, if a couple is traveling together, each with one piece of luggage, and your luggage is lost, each of you have lost 50% of your outfits. Imagine being an oversized traveler whose closes won't fit in a packing cube arriving in a country where the population are small and they don't have bog & tall shops? 50% is much better than zero! Additionally, the pillowcases, are dirty laundry bags we hen returning home.

If flying Internationally, make sure the airline permits luggage trackers. Air NZ has only *just* permitted travellers to use them while Lufthansa still defines luggage trackers as 'dangerous goods'. The issue is IATA guidelines on battery-operated devices being active in cargo holds. The situation on this is shifting so fast that you need to check the airline's policy more than once.

It is so frustrating when people take a carryon and a personal item that can’t possible fit under the seat so up it goes overhead. I’ve seen it on every one of the 10 flights I’ve been on in the last 7 months. I even saw a couple in front of me roll two carry ons each onto the plane. Why is this allowed? Why don’t they get stopped? There are at least three opportunities to stop them the last being while they are boarding the plane.
@SnowySpiritRuby
@SnowySpiritRuby Жыл бұрын
Can't speak for everyone, but bags that contain only exempt items (medical, etc. - each airline has their own list of what qualifies) are allowed in addition to the normal 2-bag allowance, so that's sometimes the reason (some people have to travel with so much medical equipment that, even for just a 4-day trip, the equipment alone takes up an entire carryon, but they might not want/be able to check that bag into the belly of the plane, for obvious reasons). And, as far as I know, at least for into, out of, and within the U.S., there is no limit to the number of exempt-items-only bags that are allowed per passenger.

@@annemarie6979 Each airline has its own list of exempt items that don't count toward luggage allowance, in addition to its specifics on what size and type of luggage is allowed. Not claiming that every extra bag they had was exempt, but I'm guessing a good number of them were. Also, a lot of times some of the overheads have emergency supplies stored in them, so there already isn't going to be enough space for everyone anyway.

@@tam6912 You're welcome. Yep, at least some airlines allow extra bags for anything bought in, or from certain shops in, the airport (sometimes referred to as "duty-free"), as long as the bags themselves are shopping bags from one of the shops (as opposed to in some type of luggage, such as an extra tote bag, duffle, etc. - some airlines might allow duty-free items in non-shopping bags, but don't count on it) - each airline has its own "exempt" list, so you can check the one(s) for your airline(s) to see what items count as exempt for your particular trip; other common exempt items are pillows, coats, car seats, and medical stuff (this one is universal on flights into, out of, and within the U.S. due to the ADA and ACAA - only some very minor restrictions apply for those flights, and the airline will spell them out if there are any; I'm not familiar with other countries' airlines' rules, so their restrictions might be different).

@@SnowySpiritRuby -- Yes, you are correct that TSA is a US organization/company. Other countries have their own ways (systems, agencies) to do things. We try to keep remembering this -- Their country, their rules. And then abide. Transferring in Narita (NRT, Tokyo) for onward flights into Suvarnabhumi (BKK, Bangkok), we always knew to be ready for another full-on security check, even though we never left air-side. Best to hit the onboard toilet before landing, then get into the massively growing line for transit security, then find a bathroom on the way to the gate area. When switching from Delta to other airlines and going through Taiwan, the system seemed temporary, with a long table for checking all carry-ons, then a portable platform to get up on for a final check before being allowed to go down a level to the gate area. NOTE: This info is based on nine trips over to Southeast Asia, usually looping also into Cambodia and Laos. BUT our last time was Christmastime 2018. Therefore, all info is subject to change. Best thing is to do as Laurie says, and keep up to date with the details for all the airlines and check more closer to trip time.
