sorry about your experiences with service staff - I'm one myself for about 20 years, and asking difficult questions is generally frowned upon. Where to get from obscure point a to b, or how much capacity a bag is, is interpreted as demanding, and a little disrespectful (not your fault) either because you can just google it yourself (as it's not general knowledge), or the staff person will have to put down their work, ignore the queue and try and find out, as UK operates a quasi customer-is-always-right expectation, which no one ever exploits with complicit understanding. In the US they have wonderful service standards, but it's different outside -you'll find us lacking. It likely didn't help you happened to be asking directions from one of the most impoverished districts of the centre to the most affluent. Generally you never get difficult customers in the UK as most people will still put on a pained smile if you ladle uranium into their tea - in contrast to a certain breed of Brit who are the polar opposite everywhere they go, and feck it up for everyone else. You only get 'leftfield' requests (yes, directions are total spin-balls) from entitled locals - Kensington moms, aristocratic old people, Rich Kids etc who expect you to run off and do their things for them, and don't expect a no, and are even lovely about it (they can be from any race or accent, as the world's elite make London their money-parking home). Witness a highly entitled yummy mummy spill a few drops of Evian on her top, then proceed to ask everyone else on the tube, one-by-one if they have any tissue, as if it's the be all and end all. She will get barely suppressed eye-rolling, even as they fork one out for her, and that she will be utterly, utterly blinkered to. -edit* obviously that's not you! But you may have been mistaken for that, aka the 'Sloane Ranger'. Also in all your innocence, if they said they didn't know you'd have been fine with that, but from British service standards point of view it's seen as a personal failure. All in all it's slightly seen as out-of-touch, as class is still very much the great divider in the UK - and a whole unseen dynamic at work. Don't -just don't ever ask a man selling green tomatoes if he has a red one -unless youre from Kensington. There's a huge social hangover from servants and masters here - don't say 'sir' or 'madam', don't ask for anything that's not on the menu, don't ask for changes to the set offer, or generally remind us of our plainful class dynamic. Oh and we're not friendly, we'll help anyone in need, but strangers talking to you ignites a secret check of wallets, exits and phones under the smile - what is it that you want from me? The well dressed woman however was utterly OUT OF LINE not to acknowledge your compliment- as a Brit we would be SOOO flattered if anyone ever stopped us to say that, it is literally unheard of among southerners, and we'd treasure the memory for decades (someone actually went out of their way to tell us how nice we looked!). Even if you see someone look fab, your Brit autopilot dictate that you ignore them. If you are about to lose your child to a tractor, you don't run across someone's path in case they may get surprised. My suspicion is she may have been famous? Or not a Brit.

This was so helpful and I totally understand why they behaved the way they did. I can see why classism still plays a role in the UK given they still have their monarch present. I had a feeling that was the main contributor to their behavior. Usually when I wear my pink coat I get hundreds of compliments and that day I only got one and I believe the woman was Australian too so that makes sense. I didn’t realize my questions were an inconvenience. In America it’s small talk to get to know each other. I didn’t experience the same behavior in Paris, so I guess my personality just goes better there. Such a shame I had such high hopes for London.

@@joymae yeah sorry about that, we have to look up smalltalk between strangers in a dictionary. Some Brits actually go to the US just to find out how friendly people are (nothern Brits though are the polar opposite to the south). I once heard someone say hello to me in my neighbourhood, both me and my buddy walked past in stunned silence, before turning round and yelling hello back (she was a northerner) - so AWKWARD. It's weird how Parisians have the rep for being rude when theyre actually much friendlier, and Londoners are meant to be polite but are often just NOT.

@@zupermaus9276 Again completely agree, northerner are really different and so easy to talk with, a lot more relaxed! But as a Parisian myself, I am not sure, French are overall really rude, whenever I go back home, I always have a row (they love a row!) they are the worst. Let's say you go in a shop looking for something that they definitely would have like asking for a common flower in a flower shop - and they dont have it , instead of just replying 'sorry we dont ' they really just love being expansive and dry about how they dont have it etc going so far as mocking you etc which is completely weird. they never try hard, never try at all, they always are so bothered not even hiding it and will even probably tells you in the face sometimes. they have a lot of attitudes, and I find it really annoying. People are also kinda rude on the social scene, unlike in London. it is very clicky and mean, and they rarely let down their hair because they care so much about what everyone will say (paris is small , gossip is STRONG) very intense social scene. i find London a lot more anonymous and fun and people are more curious about one another.

OMG girl, you walk so much lol also you literally walk in my life, where I work, live and play, it's so fun to watch! I would have loved bumping into you. I am so sorry you had encountered some rude people. Generally, it's just an impression, they really just seem rude but they kinda are not in fact, they are not overly expressive and kind of keep to themselves I guess, that includes the hipsters, I live in Shoreditch and even with me and everyone they are still too cool for school, but I am a born and bred Parisian and people are definitely rude in Paris, haha. OMG Ibiza is so nice girl, there are two bits of Ibiza, I go on the 'hippie' (not really hippie) side when I go, there are parties but super chill ones.@14:20 lol i love that you say Eurostar is sketchy, haha, Eurostar is definitely not sketchy lol that's the only train that can bring you to Paris anyway and 200£ is definitely not cheap, and I hate Eurostar for being so expensive because I wish I could go home more often very quickly rather than flying because of way cheaper! Cant wait to see the Paris video !

It was 200 euros for a round trip and two night hotel stay! I felt it was still a steal or maybe I’m just jaded with NYC prices. That’s so cool you’re from Paris. I’ve decided I want to move to Paris. I haven’t met a rude person in Paris yet I think the accent just makes them sound rude haha

I would see you living in the Marais quarter 100% , Étienne marcelle or les abesses ( bit touristy but not like montmartre and with real residents and truly a great community vibe , and lots of clothing store, shops and cafes ) ah you make me want to go there asap now!
